Chapter 252 Qualified Mother
Catching the implication in her words, Alexander chose to ignore it, shoving his hands into his pockets. A cool, playful smile appeared on his face, oozing charm and arrogance. “A beautiful girl like Ms. Thompson–too bad I can’t have you. What a pity in life.”
Hearing his feigned sigh, Nancy wished she could scream at him to fight for her, to take her away.
Anxiety bubbled inside her, yet some words she couldn’t say outright.
As Nancy watched his “dejected” look, a twisted sense of satisfaction mixed with urgency stirred in Nancy’s chest. She leaned in slightly, her voice soft. “Mr. Lessing, you’re so graceful, handsome, and talented–exactly my type, actually.”
Alexander hadn’t expected Nancy to hint so boldly. He smirked, his voice casual yet laced with provocation. “Guy likes the girl, girl likes the guy–too bad you’re with Ethan. Otherwise, I’d definitely take my time enjoying your body, Ms. Thompson.”
He’d meant to shock her with his blunt, lewd words, thinking she’d back off. Instead, she blushed, lowering her voice to a whisper, “To be honest with Mr. Lessing… I’m still a virgin.”

Nancy hung her head after speaking, her face flushing bright red–like a ripe apple, delicate and tempting.
Alexander froze for a split second, caught off guard.
If her words were true, Ethan hadn’t touched her all these years?
How could that be?
She must be lying.
Yet doubt lingered, gnawing at him.
What if she was telling the truth?
What if there was nothing between her and Ethan? Would Emily change her mind about the divorce if she knew?
The thought terrified him. Alexander was afraid Emily would still love Ethan, still choose him.
He’d already missed eight years of her life; he couldn’t bear to miss another eight.
This time, Alexander would take her by force, by trickery, by begging–whatever it took to keep Emily by his side forever.
She’d been hurt once; he’d never let it happen again. For the 2/7

rest of his life,
Alexander only believed he could give Emily true happiness.
After revealing her secret, Nancy watched Alexander’s expression shift, a storm of emotions crossing his face.
She smiled to herself–he must be plotting how to steal her
from Ethan.
Pressing her advantage, she asked, “Mr. Lessing, would you mind exchanging contact information?”
Alexander’s mind had wandered far away. Pulled back to reality by her voice, he hesitated for a moment before replying.
“How could I say no to my dream girl asking so nicely?”
Pulling out his phone, he added Nancy’s WhatsApp.
As Nancy saw the friend request accepted, her smile widened, satisfaction glowing in her eyes.
Alexander, though, had lost all interest in toying with her.
His expression turned cold. “I have things to do—I’ll head out first.”
Without waiting for her response, he turned and walked away,
never looking back.

Watching his decisive figure leave, Nancy convinced herself he was rushing off to plan how to pursue her.
The thought lifted her spirits, the shadow of being hit at the banquet a few days ago fading away.

Back at Joy Gardens, Emily and Ethan found Sophia still running a high fever, her consciousness fading into delirium.
Emily fed her some water, wiped her body with a cool cloth, then lifted her into her arms and headed downstairs.
Ethan followed behind, fumbling around, unsure what to do.
His panicked yet helpless state annoyed Emily, her patience wearing thin.
“Ethan, stop pacing around aimlessly! Sophia’s sick–she needs to go to the hospital. Go get the car ready.”
No longer in the mood to argue, Ethan nodded hastily. “Okay.”
On the drive to the hospital, Sophia grew more disoriented, her eyes half–closed.
Emily kept calling her name, whispering memories of happier

times–how she’d laughed, how she’d clung to her as a toddler.
Tears welled up in her eyes as she spoke.
Her once sweet, loving daughter–now a little girl who couldn’t make friends, lying weak in her arms.
Guilt and heartache washed over her.
Had she failed as a mother? Had she neglected Sophia’s upbringing? The questions swirled in her mind, torturing her.
Pulling up to the hospital entrance, Emily moved to lift Sophia, but Ethan gently pushed her aside. “Let me carry her—you’ve had enough.”
Exhausted, Emily let him take their daughter.
Ethan rushed into the emergency room with Sophia in his arms, Emily right behind him.
Soon, Sophia was laid on a hospital bed, the doctor ordering blood tests and an emergency fever–reducing shot.
Even as the needle pricked her skin, Sophia didn’t stir–too delirious to feel the pain.
She’d always been afraid of pain.

Emily’s heart raced, fear clutching her chest.
As a pediatric surgeon, she knew how critical the situation was–one wrong move, and her daughter could be in mortal danger.
The thought made her breath catch, as if the air had been sucked out of the room.
Ethan stood by her side, his lack of medical knowledge leaving him useless.
Watching Emily’s tense, pale face, he felt a surge of fear, too— so strong he dared not speak a word.
The blood test results came back quickly, with a nurse calling them to the doctor’s office.
Inside, the on–duty doctor adjusted his glasses, looking up from the report with a serious expression. “The child has the flu. Has she been in any crowded places lately?”
Hearing it was the flu, Emily instantly knew how it had happened.
Young kids had weak immune systems–crowded places were breeding grounds for viruses.
Thinking of Sophia’s recent trips, she replied plainly, “She was 6/7

The doctor’s brows furrowed in frustration. “Taking a young child to the hospital right now? It’s flu season–viruses are everywhere. Kids have fragile immune systems; hospitals are the easiest place to get infected. You didn’t even take precautions? What kind of parents are you?”
His voice rose with anger as he scolded them openly.
This wasn’t the hospital where Emily worked, and she’d chosen not to reveal her profession.
The scolding stung, a wave of grievance washing over her— Emily stayed silent, biting her lip.
Misinterpreting her silence as guilt, the doctor pressed on, his tone harsher. “If you’d come even an hour later, this little girl might not have made it. Do you think you’re a qualified mother?”
