Chapter 255 What the Hell Do You Want 

The temperature reading on the thermometer sent a wave of panic through the air, and both Emily and Ethan were on edge. 

There was nothing the nurse could do, so she said, “I’ll go ask the doctor and see if we need to take any measures.” 

Emily didn’t say a word, just let the nurse go do her thing. 

Ethan sat down beside her, his eyes full of worry as he stared at little Sophia. 

It wasn’t long before the nurse came back. “Let’s wait a bit and see if the fever comes down on its own.” 

As a fellow doctor, Emily knew well that reducing a fever wasn’t something that could happen in a flash. 

So, she decided to play the waiting game. 

Sophia seemed to be holding up okay, so there was no need to rush into any treatments. 

Ethan, his heart aching for his daughter, kept gently stroking her pale face. Sophia managed a weak smile and said, “Dad, I’m alright.” 

Hearing that, Emily felt a lump in her throat. Tears started

welling up and rolled down her cheeks. Ethan saw this and whispered, “Sophie’s gonna be fine. Don’t cry.” 

But Emily ignored him. 

She just couldn’t bring herself to answer.

The reason she was crying wasn’t just because of Sophia’s illness. It was the fact that Sophia only seemed to care about making her dad feel better, completely leaving her mom out. 

Emily had worried about her daughter just as much as Ethan, but it felt like Sophia was playing favorites. 

Still, out of love for her sick daughter, Emily stayed in the hospital room, keeping a close eye on her. 

Half an hour later, the fever finally broke, but Sophia looked more and more tired. 

After they managed to get her to sleep, she threw up, and then the fever came back with a vengeance. 

The whole night, Sophia’s temperature kept bouncing up and down, and Emily and Ethan were wide–awake the entire time. 

At five in the morning, after the last bout of high fever subsided, Sophia mumbled in a daze, “Mom.” 

“Yes, sweetie. Mom’s here,” Emily quickly replied.

She grabbed Sophia’s hand and pressed it to her lips.

With tears in her half–closed eyes. Sophia said hoarsely, “Mom, I want some fish.” 

Emily’s heart softened right away “Sure thing, honey. Mom will make it for you today,” she promised without hesitation. 

Sophia soon fell back into a deep sleep. Emily let out a long sigh of relief. 

Seeing how exhausted Emily was, Ethan said, “Go home and get some rest. I’ll take care of Sophie. 

Emily almost scoffed at his words. Sure, Ethan had been there all night, but it was her who had done most of the comforting. 

Now that Sophia was asleep, he wanted her to leave. Where was this concern when Sophia was burning up in the middle of the night? 

Fuming, Emily snapped, “Get lost.” 

Ethan, getting irritated by her attitude, said, “Emily, can you be a bit more reasonable?” 

Without even glancing at him, Emily got up and walked out of the room in big strides.

Seeing her leave, Ethan called out “Let me drive you home.” 

“No, stay with Sophie,” Emily refused. 

Without another word, Emily left the hospital. 

Outside, the streetlights were still on. 

Standing by the curb, waiting for a taxi, Emily felt like she was floating. 

The sleepless night and the emotional stress had really taken it out of her. 

But the thought of her sick daughter gave her the strength. She was determined to go home and make that delicious breakfast. 

As soon as she got in the taxi, Emily dozed off. 

Roused by the taxi driver’s voice, Emily finally opened her eyes. 

After settling the fare, she stepped into Joy Gardens. 

It wasn’t appropriate to head back to Carter Manor at this hour, lest she disturb the Carter family’s slumber. That was the reasoning behind her choice to come to Joy Gardens. 

Besides, Sophia had grown accustomed to the homely comforts here.

In the kitchen, Emily got down to preparing breakfast for Sophia. 

Once the pot of soup bubbled to perfection, she carefully transferred it into a container and set it on the table.

After a quick cleanup, she decided to whip up a side of spinach quiche to pair with the soup. 

Returning from the kitchen, she found Gloria already seated at the table, the container of soup in front of her, its lid ajar. 

Gloria cast a disdainful look at the soup and scoffed, “Seriously? This little bit won’t even fill a mouse’s belly!” 

Without uttering a word, Emily marched over to the table and snatched the container from Gloria’s grasp. 

She wordlessly began stuffing it into a small tote bag. 

But Gloria wasn’t having it. She reached out, trying to grab the container back, and spat out, “Can’t even do the job of a housekeeper right. You make this measly amount and still want to take it away? You’ve got some nerve!” 

Emily held on tight, not about to let Gloria have her way. 

The two tugged at the container, and in the scuffle, it slipped from their hands and crashed to the floor. The soup splattered everywhere, soaking the floor tiles.

Seeing her hard–work go to waste Emily felt her last shred of patience snap. 

Her eyes welled with frustrated tears as Emily glared at Gloria and shoved her on the shoulder, “What the hell do you want from me?” 

Gloria lost her balance and stumbled to the ground. 

Before Emily could react, Gloria let out a shrill scream. “Emily, you’re trying to kill me!” 

Emily ignored her, just standing there, eyes fixed on the mess of soup on the floor. 

She’d spent over an hour stirring that pot, and now it was all for nothing. 

Just then, the sound of footsteps echoed from the doorway. 

Gloria, spotting Ethan entering, immediately cranked volume of her wailing.
