Since Emily seemed to pay no heed to her sickness, the little girl made up her mind that she didn’t want Emily around. 

Back in bed, Sophia turned away from Emily and grumbled, “Go do your own stuff. I’ve got Dad and Nancy with me.” 

Undeterred by Sophia’s cold shoulder, Emily patiently explained, “Sophie, Mom’s a pediatric surgeon. This flu usually gives you a fever for three to five days, and the first couple of days are super important. I’ve taken time off work. I’ll stick around for three days.” 

Emily’s voice held a touch of pleading, but Sophia remained unmoved. “Don’t need you,” she said bluntly. 

“Just one day, then,” Emily begged. 

Still, Sophia stood firm. “Seriously. Go do what you have to do.” 

Those words hit Emily like a cold blast, but thinking of Sophia’s well–being, she stayed put. 

Even if Sophia didn’t like her or talk to her, Emily was dead set on staying by her daughter’s side. 

She’d wait out the first two days and then play it by ear.

Sophia skipped breakfast. Seeing that Emily wasn’t leaving, she clammed up. 

Around noon, Emily was about to call Ethan, asking him to come and watch over Sophia while she went home to fix lunch. 

But before she could dial the number, the hospital room door, 

swung open. 

Hearing the noise, Emily turned to see Ethan and Nancy walking in one after the other. 

Nancy carried a small food container. 

Even in her sickly state, Sophia’s face lit up. “Dad, Nancy! You’re here!” she exclaimed cheerfully. 

As Ethan and Nancy approached the bed, Emily wordlessly stepped aside and stood in the corner, fists clenched tightly against her pants.

As soon as Nancy sat down beside the bed, Sophia sat up and threw herself into Nancy’s arms. Nancy, I missed you so much. I’m so glad you’re here,” she said. 

Nancy hugged Sophia back and gently stroked her face. “It’s my fault you got sick, sweetie,” she said guiltily. 

Sophia shook her head. “No, it’s just that my immune system’s not up to par.” 

With tears welling up in her eyes, Nancy said, “If I’d known you’d get sick, I’d never have let you come to the hospital. Don’t be mad at me, okay?” 

Sophia reached up to wipe Nancy’s tears. “I’m not mad, Nancy. I’ll be back on my feet in a couple of days.” 

Managing a faint smile, Nancy patted Sophia’s cheek. “You’re such a good girl.” 

Sophia clung to Nancy like a little monkey. 

Ethan, though smiling, gently chided, “Sophie, Nancy’s still a patient here. You’re making her uncomfortable.” 

Hearing that, Sophia obediently let go of Nancy. 

Seeing his daughter looking a bit down, Ethan picked up the lunchbox. “Look, this is the special lunch she made for you,” he

Sophia’s face brightened up again! “Wow! I’ve never had Nancy’s cooking. Dad, open it up. I can’t wait,” she said, craning her neck in anticipation. 

Nancy was usually tied up with both work and research, so it was always Rebecca who took charge of the cooking. 

Noticing Sophia’s obvious excitement, Nancy leaned over and murmured, trying to temper her expectations, “Sophie, don’t pin too many hopes on me. I’m not much of a cook, so it might not hit the spot for you.” 

Sophia was having none of it. Her eyes were fixed on the container as she pleaded with Ethan, “Dad, hurry up and open it. I can’t wait to try it!” 

Ethan did as she asked. 

The moment Ethan opened the container, there was a bowl of soup inside. Despite its thick, milky–white appearance, there were black specks floating on the surface. 

Even so, Sophia didn’t show the slightest bit of disgust. Instead, she picked up a small spoon, scooped up some soup, and took a sip. 

The taste made her tongue tingle, and she instinctively frowned.

Meanwhile, Emily had remained in the corner, trying to stay out of the way. 

She watched Ethan, Sophia, and Nancy sitting together, looking like a loving family of three. 

Sophia’s reaction broke Emily’s heart. The soup looked unappetizing, yet she still took two big sips to be polite. 

After that, she smacked her lips and said to Nancy, “Nancy, this soup is so yummy! I wanna have it again next time.” 

Emily witnessed it all. Her heart ached, and her body felt numb. 

A single bowl of soup could make Sophia so happy, but all the things she’d done for her daughter seemed to go unnoticed. 

She felt like a complete joke just standing there. 

Unable to bear it any longer, Emily let go of the fabric of her pants and turned to leave the ward. 

When Sophia looked up, she saw Emily’s retreating figure. 

Although this was what she’d wanted, seeing her mom leave made her feel a strange discomfort, a prickly feeling she couldn’t quite describe. 

Trying not to dwell on it, Sophia looked up at Ethan and noticed the bandage on his forehead.

After leaving the hospital, Emily took a taxi back to the hospital and withdrew her leave request. 

She worked the whole afternoon and then put in an extra half–hour of overtime. 

As Emily was leaving, a colleague invited her to dinner. 

By the time she got back to Carter Manor, it was already 11 p.m. 

Ever since Ethan left the hospital where Sophia was staying, there’d been radio–silence from him. And Emily didn’t show the slightest bit of concern about how Sophia was faring. 

Henry and Linda had gone to bed. Ryan and Chloe’s room was lit, but they were out. 

Molly was also fast asleep. 

Not wanting to wake anyone up, Emily moved quietly.
