Emily didn’t protest. She nodded meekly and said, “Okay, I’ll do as you say, Chloe.” 

Noticing Emily’s chapped lips, Chloe ruffled her hair and said, “Lie back. I’ll get you some warm water.”

Her hair was damp with sweat, and her face was flushed. 

Alexander stood by the bed, clad in a dark tracksuit. His short hair was casually disheveled on his head, and there was a gentle smile on his face.

Alexander tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and said tenderly, “They’ve all gone home.” 

This puzzled Emily even more. “But… how come?” 

Given Chloe’s nature, she wouldn’t leave Emily alone in the hospital.

These words left Emily wordless for a moment.

Seeing her silence, Alexander continued, his tone softening, “If I do get infected, it’d be a silver lining. I’d get to stay right here in this ward with you, take care of you, and keep you company all the time.”

Not long after, Emily noticed the saline bag was empty. “Can you change the fluid for me?” she asked. 

Alexander looked up and saw that she was right. 

He got up and reached for the new bag.
