Chapter 261 I’m Miles Apart From Ethan

Hearing that Emily’s words weren’t about asking him to let go, Alexander felt his heart melt.

A relieved smile crossed his face as he propped himself up from the hospital bed. “Alright, I’ll carry you,” he said.

Emily was feeling all sticky and uncomfortable. At his offer, her first worry was if she stank.

“Alexander, it’s just a fever. I can manage on my own,” she said hesitantly.

The budding smile on Alexander’s face faded right away.

Seeing his change, Emily was about to explain, but before she could, Alexander was out of the bed. He whisked the blanket off her and scooped her up in his arms.

Looking down at her with a steely gaze, he declared firmly, “I’m carrying you, Emily. You’re not slipping away from me.”

Too weak to fight back, Emily had to give in.

He carried her to the bathroom and set her on the rug. Then he dashed back to get her shoes.

After slipping them onto her feet, Alexander stood up.

“Go ahead. I’ll keep my eyes off. I’ll just stay right here,” he said, turning his back, his posture as straight as an arrow.

Feeling a bit self–conscious, Emily murmured, “Alexander, could you wait outside?”

Alexander paused for a moment, then nodded. “Sure. I’ll be

right outside the door. Holler when you’re done.” With that, he stepped out.

Through the door, she could see his silhouette. Just to be safe, she locked the door.

After finishing up and washing her hands, she opened the door.

Alexander’s face popped up right away. “Are you okay?”

Seeing the worry in his eyes, Emily was a bit taken aback.

Could a ladies‘ man like him really care this much?

Emily suspected there was some hidden motive.

Maybe there was something in her that he wanted.

If that weren’t the case, Emily really couldn’t figure out why Alexander was being so kind to her.

Trying not to overthink, she replied, “Yeah, I’m okay.”

By now, Emily’s fever had broken, and her mind was clearer.

Feeling his gaze, Emily turned to him and whispered, “Do I stink?”

Alexander was caught off guard. It took him a few seconds to answer, “No, you don’t.”

Emily didn’t buy it. “You’re lying.”

Getting a bit flustered, Alexander quickly explained, “I swear, there’s no smell.”

Seeing his eagerness, Emily furrowed her brows, trying to read him. But he was an enigma to her

Finally, she turned back to stare at the ceiling.

Just then, Alexander’s phone rang.

In the quiet ward, Emily could hear a man’s voice on the other end. “Mr. Lessing, I’ve got the stuff. Should I bring it up?”

Alexander replied, “Yeah.”

“Call when you’re here. I’ll come out and grab it.”

After a short chat, Alexander ended the call.

Moments later, his phone rang again.

Without a second thought, Alexander stepped out of the hospital

ward.

In less than two minutes, he returned, clutching a bag. Inside, a thermos lunch–box sat snug.

Emily knew at a glance that it was the grub Alexander had arranged.

He laid out the small containers, and a delicious spread was revealed: creamy chicken soup, a fresh side salad, and several succulent shrimps.

He plumped up a pillow against the bed–rail and helped Emily get comfy. Then, with tender care, he picked up a dainty bowl and began to spoon–feed her.

Emily was ravenous. She didn’t put up a fuss and just let him do

It wasn’t until she was halfway through that Alexander finally spoke up, “Is it good?”

Emily nodded and said, all earnest, “Yeah, it’s bang on.”

At her words, Alexander started shelling a shrimp tail with a calm air. He cocked an eyebrow and drawled, “Since you’re loving this, come over to my place sometime. I’ll get Mom to whip up more nice stuff for you.”

There was still a bite of shrimp in Emily’s mouth. Hearing that, she went into a coughing fit.

She’d clearly choked, her face flushing bright red and her eyes welling up with tears.

Seeing her like that, Alexander quickly ditched the shrimp and grabbed a glass of water. As he held it to her lips, he murmured, “Mom slaved over these dishes just for you tonight.”

After taking a sip of water, Emily felt a bit better. She turned her head to look at Alexander, her mind blank for words.

Noticing her silence, Alexander gave her a little grin and asked, “Why’ve you gone quiet?”

His words left Emily in a bit of a daze.

There was a time when she’d yearned for Ethan to be like this.

But now, she was a whole new person.

Alexander’s smooth talk wouldn’t pull the wool over her eyes.

She swiveled to face him and said seriously, “What do you want from me? Just spit it out. If I can give it to you, I will. But if I can’t, don’t waste your time on me.”

Alexander met her gaze, seeing the coldness etched on her face. After a brief pause, he asked, “You’ll actually give me what I’m after?”

Emily caught the double–meaning in his words and clammed up.

Seeing that she wasn’t going to say more, Alexander passed her the peeled shrimp and said, “Mom’s prepared a ton of things for you. When you’re free, I wanna take you to meet her. Trust me, she’s an absolute gem, and so am I.”
