Breakfast neatly packed in a food container, Rebecca hailed a taxi and arrived at the hospital promptly at 9:20 AM.

It was a workday, and the streets were congested with traffic- she’d fretted the entire ride, terrified Sophia would go hungry waiting for her meal.

Earlier that morning, Ethan had called, asking her to prepare breakfast and bring it over at a leisurely pace. Rebecca had hesitated then, her voice laced with concern. Mr. Wilson, if you’re going to the office and Ms. Thompson to the lab, who will stay with Ms. Sophia Wilson?”

Sophie’s mom will be there,Ethan had assured her over the phone.

Knowing Emily would be with the little girl had eased Rebecca’s worries, letting her focus on making a delicate, nourishing breakfastone that took extra time to prepare perfectly for Sophia.

Hopping out of the taxi, she hurried toward the ward, food container in hand, arriving at 9:30 AM.

But the room was emptyno sign of Emily or Sophia.

Setting the container down on the nightstand, she rushed to the nurse’s station to ask after the little girl.

Sophia? She had a high fever and lost consciousness a little while agowe took her to the emergency room, the nurse replied quickly, her tone serious.

Rebecca froze on the spot, tears streaming down her face uncontrollably.

Panic washed over her, leaving her disoriented, unsure what to do next.

The nurse called her name twice before she snapped back to reality, her voice trembling. Rightthe phone. I need to call Mr. and Mrs. Wilson.”

Ethan was in a meeting, his phone on silent, but the incoming call notification popped up on the projection screen.

As he saw Rebecca’s name, a sinking feeling hit himsomething must be wrong with Sophia. He cut the meeting short, excusing himself to take the call in the hallway.

The line barely connected before Rebecca’s sobs filled his ear. Mr. Wilson, it’s terribleMs. Sophia Wilson just went into the

ER!”

A sharp, crushing pain clamped down on Ethan’s heart, his legs moving faster than his mind could process.

Without a word, he strode toward the executive elevator, his

Pressing the down button, he managed to croak out a response, his voice tight with fear, I see. I’m on my way right now.”

Hanging up, Ethan stared at the elevator numbers ticking downward, his mind a blank, chaotic mess.

A terrible thought gnawed at himwhat if he was too late? What if he lost Sophia?

Regret flooded him in that momentregret for not listening to Emily, regret for taking Sophia to the hospital in the first place.

After getting into the car, his hands shook as Ethan gripped the steering wheel.

He couldn’t even recall the drive to the hospitalhis entire focus was on Sophia, his heart pounding in his throat the whole way.

A call came in from Lucas, but Ethan didn’t dare look at his phone, terrified it was Rebecca with more bad news.

Thankfully, it wasn’t her.

Pulling up to the hospital, Ethan spotted Rebecca pacing back and forth outside the ER, her face ashen.

She stopped when she saw him, rushing over. Mr. Wilson, you’re here.”

Ethan’s eyes were bloodshot, his voice hoarse with exhaustion and fear. How’s Sophia?”

No doctors have come out yet. I don’t know anything.Rebecca shook her head, her voice small.

Closing his eyes tightly, Ethan clenched his jaw, his chest heavy with anxiety.

He sank onto a bench, leaning forward with his hands pressed together against his forehead, silently praying for his daughter’s safetybegging for her to be okay.

Rebecca watched him, her lips parting as if to speak, but she held back.

With Sophia’s condition unknown, now wasn’t the time to say, anything that might add to his distress.

Minutes dragged by like hours before Ethan finally lifted his head, his gaze sharp with urgency. Where’s Emily?”

Rebecca turned to him, shaking her head. She wasn’t here when

I arrived. I have no idea where she went.”

A frown creased Ethan’s forehead.

Pulling out his phone, he checked his messageshe’d texted Emily, telling her to come to the hospital to be with Sophia, but

there was no reply.

Even so, he tried to convince himself she wouldn’t abandon their daughter.

Emily must have gone out to deal with something urgent right after coming to the hospital.

But another ten minutes passed, and Emily still didn’t show.

Reluctantly, Ethan dialed her number.

The line rang, but no one answered.

He called again and againeach time, the phone rang until it went to voicemail.

Confusion and anger swirled inside him. Was she ignoring his calls, or hadn’t she seen them?

His panic spiked just as the ER doors swung open.

Ethan jumped to his feet, rushing toward the doctor, his voice desperate. Doctor! How’s my daughter? Is she okay?”

The doctor, glasses perched on his nose, pulled down his mask, his expression calm. She’s out of danger now. But she’ll need to stay in the pediatric ICU tonight we can move her to a regular ward once her condition stabilizes.”

A heavy sigh of relief escaped Ethan, the tension draining from his shoulders.

The doctor watched him, then frowned, his tone sharp with disapproval. Sophia is only five years old. You as parents need to be more responsiblehow could you leave a sick child in the hospital alone with no one to watch over her?”

Ethan’s brows furrowed. Wasn’t her mother here?”

If her mother had been here, Sophia wouldn’t have ended up in the ER,the doctor retorted, his irritation growing.

Ethan’s blood ran coldEmily hadn’t come at all.

He didn’t hear another word the doctor said, his mind fixated on one question: why hadn’t she shown up?

A fiery anger burned in his chest as Ethan dialed Emily’s number repeatedly, each unanswered call fueling his rage.

This time, he was certainshe wasn’t missing his calls by accident. She was ignoring him on purpose.

Her refusal to answer, her failure to show upshe’d nearly cost their daughter her life.

Thank God Sophia was okay. If anything had happened to her?

Ethan couldn’t bear to finish the thought, his hands balling into fists at his sides.
