Upon hearing this, Emily broke into a smile. With a warm glint in her eyes, she reassured Ryan, “Don’t worry, Ryan. I won’t rush into another relationship anytime soon.” 

Ryan regarded his sister, his heart heavy with pity. 

Over the years of her marriage to Ethan, she must have weathered countless hardships. 

Given her amiable nature, it was clear that she wouldn’t be seeking a divorce without good reason.

He managed a smile, though his eyes betrayed his concern. “I reckon Aaron’s a top–notch guy. You two are both in the medical field, and your families are well–matched. If he ever gives you a hard time, I’ll be there in a flash to set him straight.” 

Emily couldn’t help but chuckle at his words. She asked, “Ryan, Molly’s promised to take care of me when I’m old. Can’t I just stay single?” 

Ryan let his hand drop and replied casually, “Sure thing. You do whatever makes you happy.”

The mention of Molly made Emily perk up. “Hey, shouldn’t you be at home with Molly?” 

Ryan shrugged. “She’s busy packing for our weekend getaway. She asked me to see if you’re still up for the autumn outing with her.”

Remembering her commitment to Molly, Emily nodded firmly. “Of course. I never go back on my word.” 

Ryan was reluctant to leave Emily’s side, but she finally persuaded him to head home. 

After the worst of the flu had passed, Emily had mostly recovered. 

However, in the dead of night, a fever crept back up on her. 

Half–conscious, she heard the hospital room door swing open. The room was pitch–black, but the hallway light streamed in, casting a silhouette. 

Unable to make out the figure, she assumed it was Alexander. 

In a raspy voice, she called out, “Alexander?”

Afterward, he looked at her, his gaze soft. “Does he come around often?” 

It took Emily a moment to catch on that he was referring to Alexander. 

Despite her weakness, her tone was sharp. “Ethan, that’s between me and him. It doesn’t concern you.” 

Still looking down at her, Ethan remained silent for a moment before speaking up, “We’re still not divorced.” 

Emily let out a laugh. “It’s just that piece of paper tying us down. Without it, we’re nothing to each other.” 

After another bout of silence, Ethan asked, “What would you do if there wasn’t that paper?” 

Emily let out a snort and counter–questioned, “Well, what do you think?”

She turned her head and peeked, seeing that it was Nancy calling.

I’ll go get some warm water to wipe you down so you can sleep more comfortably.”
