When Emily stepped out of the ward, there wasn’t a soul to hold her back.

Andrew detested her, Gloria was green–eyed with envy, and Sophia didn’t need her.

It was plain as day that she’d always been the extra wheel in the group.

Back in her own ward, she ran into the doctor on a round.

The doctor told her, “Your condition isn’t too serious. You can start thinking about getting out of here.”

Emily had been itching to be discharged today anyway, even without the doctor’s say–so.

In the afternoon, Chloe dropped by and took care of all the discharge formalities for Emily.

By the time they wrapped things up, it was already past five in the afternoon.

“I went to your department today. They said you were on leave, so I thought I’d swing by Carter Manor to see how you were doing,” he explained.

Emily passed him a plate of trail mix and replied, “I’ve had a bit of a fever these days, so I skipped work at the hospital.”

Without thinking, Aaron reached out and felt Emily’s forehead, then his own.

Just then, Molly came dashing down the stairs.

Emily hugged her tightly, her eyes stinging.

She played with Emily’s hair and babbled, “Aunt Emily, Aaron brought so much stuff! There’s fancy wine and vitamins for Grandpa, designer dresses and high–end skincare for Grandma. He got Dad a snazzy tie and Mom a gorgeous watch. And there’s this huge box just for you…”

Molly leaned in close and whispered, “I sneaked a peek. There are cookies, soda, and a cool video game console. And there’s some really pretty jewelry, too.”

Then, sitting up straight, Molly laughed, “Oh, and Aaron got me presents, too! Tons of chocolate bars and new Barbie dolis!”

Molly let out a couple of cheery chuckles and announced, “Aunt Emily, I’m gonna go upstairs and play with my Barbie dolls.”

Emily nodded in agreement. “Sure thing, honey.”

After Molly skipped upstairs, Emily turned to Aaron, and with a gentle smile, said her thanks.

Without directly responding, Aaron suddenly blurted out, “Professor Jones is throwing a party this weekend. He asked me to invite you along.”

Caught a bit off guard, Emily still agreed readily, “Okay then.”

It was still early. The Carter family hadn’t returned home, yet the servants were already busy in the kitchen prepping dinner.

Aaron had dropped off the gifts and seen Emily, but he seemed in no rush to leave.

It wasn’t until 7 p.m. that the whole Carter family made it back.
