With a sharp glare, Gloria stared down at Sophia, the warning in her eyes as palpable as the words that slipped out of her mouth. “If you wanna sleep, then hit the bay. If not, then get your butt out there and be dog chow!” 

Sophia’s brows knitted together, and she clamped down on her lower lip, desperately trying to stifle the sobs that bubbled up in her throat. But it was a losing battle, and small whimpers escaped her. 

How could the sweet, gentle Gloria she knew turn into such a fire–breather? 

After the outburst, Gloria plopped onto the bed. 

A long day on her feet had left her completely wiped out, and Sophia’s nonstop whining was the final straw that broke the camel’s back. 

However, as she lay there, the sheets cool against her skin, a pang of guilt shot through her. 

Maybe she’d been a bit too hard on the kid. 

After all, her daughter Nancy was with Ethan, and giving his child a hard time wouldn’t exactly win her any mom–of–the–year

Thoughts danced around in her head, and sleep seemed like a distant dream. 

Meanwhile, Sophia sat there on the edge of the bed. 

Seeing Gloria drift off, she tentatively lay down, inching closer bit by bit. Then, in a tiny voice, she asked, “Granny Gloria, are you mad at me?” 

Gloria had been racking her brain, trying to figure out how to smooth things over, when Sophia’s question caught her off guard. 

She wasted no time, pulling the girl close and saying in a soft, soothing voice, “Honey, I was just worried sick about you bawling your eyes out, so I lost it. Don’t go blabbing about this to anyone, okay?” 

Sophia snuggled into Gloria’s arms, her body still shaking with the occasional sniffle. She nodded and mumbled, “Okay.” 

Gloria had been prepared to pull the “Nancy won’t love you if you tell” card, but she was glad it didn’t come to that. 

The following day, just as Sophia stirred from her slumber, Nancy walked in through the door. 

The moment Nancy came into view, Sophia sprang out of bed without even bothering to slip on her slippers. She dashed towards Nancy at full tilt and threw her arms around her, tears streaming down her face as she sobbed, “Nancy, I’m so relieved you’re back.”

Dropping to her knees, Naney cupped Sophia’s face in her hands. “What’s going on, sweetie? Are you feeling down?”

Sophia kept tight–lipped about the previous night’s drama. Instead, she tilted her head up and pleaded, “Nancy, can you stay home with me today? I don’t wanna go to school.”

Nancy could see the disappointment written all over her face. “How about having Granny Gloria keep you company?” 

Just at the mention of Gloria, Sophia shuddered. “No way!” 

Nancy raised an eyebrow. “What’s going on here? You’ve gotta tell me.” 

Sophia stayed silent for a moment and then said, “I’d rather hang out with Great–grandpa.” 

“All right, I’ll drive you there,” Nancy offered. 

Sophia gave a quick nod, and off they went. 

After dropping Sophia off, Nancy made a beeline for the kitchen, where the smell of freshly brewed coffee and sizzling bacon filled 

the air.

“Mom,” she called out as she walked in. 

Gloria turned around from the stove, a warm smile spreading across her face. “You’re home?” 

As Nancy settled in beside her, she furrowed her brows and asked, “What’s up with Sophia? She seems off.” 

Gloria put down the things in her hands. After drying her hands with a towel, she turned to Nancy and said, “She kept crying last night. It was so annoying that I just couldn’t hold it back. I really let her have it.” 

At her words, Nancy’s wrinkled brow smoothed out. She softly told Gloria, “Next time she cries, don’t bother yelling. Just give her a whack. I’ve been fed up with her for ages, but just couldn’t find a chance to teach her a lesson. Mom, do me a solid and take it out on her.” 

Gloria had been worried that Nancy would scold her, seeing her serious look. Instead, she got this unexpected response. 

Letting out a louder chuckle, she whispered to Nancy, “Actually, I gave her a little pinch secretly.” 

Nancy laughed and playfully pushed Gloria. “Mom, you’re so smart.” 

Gloria patted Nancy’s hand, her voice filled with concern. “It’s tough on you. Having to act nice when you can’t stand her.”

Leaning casually against the kitchen doorframe, Ethan had his arms crossed. He looked relaxed and carefree, with a faint smile on his face. 

Hearing the voice, Nancy blushed guiltily. But quickly, she pulled herself together. “Ethan, you’re here just in time. I was telling Mom about Sophia’s school event this weekend. We’re trying to figure out who should go.” 

The school had planned an autumn outing, even though it was already early winter. 

But it was a kindergarten thing, so Ethan didn’t question it. 

After a moment’s thought, Ethan told Nancy, “If you’re free this weekend, you can go. If not, I’ll ask her mom.” 

There was a brief silence before Nancy said, “Ethan, I’ll go.”

When Oliver saw Nancy beside Ethan, he immediately understood what Ethan was up to.
