Tommy had slipped away to shed a few silent tears after being insulted as a bastard, but soon enough, he was back. 

There, in the clearing, he saw Molly astride Sophia, and it didn’t take a genius to figure out she was sticking up for him. 

Sophia looked like she’d been in a real tussle, though, so Tommy knew she’d been on the receiving end for a good while. 

Without hesitation, Tommy stepped forward and hollered, “Molly, knock it off! You’re gonna kill her if you keep this up!” 

Molly, huffing and puffing from the exertion and all sweaty, finally stopped and climbed off Sophia. 

Then she made her way over to Tommy. 

Sophia was sprawled on the ground, bawling her eyes out, not giving a hoot about her pride anymore. 

The sound of her sobs was like a dagger to Emily’s heart. 

Nancy skirted around Emily and Alexander and rushed towards Sophia. 

Over here, Molly approached Tommy. She placed her blood–scented hand on his shoulder.

Tommy felt a warm glow inside, but seeing Molly’s disheveled hair, he couldn’t help but blurt out, “Molly, you look like a tomboy.” 

Molly promptly smacked Tommy on the head. “You’re asking for it!” 

Tommy instinctively covered his head. “Sorry, I was wrong.” 

Satisfied, Molly retracted her hand. “That’s better.” 

Tommy dropped his hands and looked at Molly earnestly. “Thanks, Molly.” 

Molly rolled her eyes, finding it too mushy. “Shut up.” 

Hearing that, Tommy fell silent. 

Meanwhile, Nancy walked up to Sophia. She bent down, reaching out to hug Sophia. 

But before her hand could touch Sophia, the girl sprang up and dashed into the woods, sobbing as she ran. 

Nancy had no choice but to chase after her. 

After chatting with Tommy, Molly noticed Emily was in a funk. 

After all, she’d just punched Emily’s own daughter. Who 

wouldn’t be mad?

At her words, Emily’s heart ached even more.

Emily crouched down and gently stroked Molly’s cheek. “Molly, you don’t need to apologize. Those who do wrong should be punished.” 

Molly hugged Emily’s leg and sniffled, “Aunt Emily, go check on Sophia. Mr. Lessing is here; he’ll stay with me.” 

“Someone’s gone after her. I won’t go. She doesn’t need me anyway,” Emily replied. 

Seeing Emily still looked glum, Molly said, “Aunt Emily, hit me to let off some steam.” As she spoke, she held out her hand.

Emily just took Molly’s hand and remained silent. 

Molly knew she was hurting and said, “Aunt Emily, I don’t regret punching Sophia, no matter what.”

Lifting her gaze to Molly, Emily managed a faint smile. “Molly, you did awesome. You were protecting your friend, and that’s a great thing.” 

Despite the ache gnawing at her heart, she knew Molly had acted out of loyalty. 

Meanwhile, Alexander stood a few feet away, his hand clasped around Tommy’s. But his attention was entirely fixed on Emily. 

Even though she kept a stoic front, he could sense the profound pain she was burying deep inside. 

He felt a twinge of pity for her, yet the memory of her calling him “dirty” made him avert his eyes. 

Alexander chastised himself for being so soft–hearted, but he simply couldn’t help watching over her. 

Sensing Emily’s downcast mood, Alexander subtly nudged Tommy with his elbow, signaling him to offer some comfort. 

Tommy caught on immediately and trotted over to Emily, wrapping his small arms around her. 

“How about we fix some lunch?” Tommy pleaded.

Emily’s eyes were filled with remorse. “Tommy, would you let me say sorry to you for Sophie?” 

Tommy shook his head, shrugging it off casually. “I’m used to it. She ain’t the first one to call me a bastard. I never had a mom, 

right from the get–go.” 

As a mother, Emily’s heart shattered at his words. She pulled him closer, gently rubbing the back of his head. “Tommy, you’re a wonderful boy. Don’t let those cruel words get to you. Your dad loves you more than anything, even if your mom’s not around.” 

Tommy reached up and touched Emily’s cheek, beaming. “Yeah. Dad loves me, and so do Mr. Lessing and Mr. Winslow. And soon, there will be more people who love me.” 

“That’s right, Tommy. More and more people will love you.” Emily returned his smile. 

Tommy grabbed Emily’s hand. “Then let’s get cooking. I can almost smell the food!” 

Emily took a deep breath and pushed the unpleasantness with Sophia to the back of her mind. She got to chopping the onions and peppers, while Alexander took charge of the stove. Molly and Tommy took turns tossing in the mushrooms and tomatoes. 

Working in harmony, they soon had two delicious dishes. 

Emily was pleasantly surprised by Alexander’s culinary skills, but her thoughts were still clouded, so she didn’t bring it up. 5/6
