Ryan shot Alexander a disdainful look and remained 

silent. 

Beside them, Chloe, noticing the tension, gave Ryan a gentle nudge and then addressed Alexander, “Well, Emily’s been hanging around Joy Gardens these days.” 

Alexander’s brows knitted together, and the spark in his eyes faded. He let out a wry laugh, muttering, “Figures.” 

Chloe picked up on Alexander’s disappointment and elaborated, “But today’s an odd one. I called her earlier, and she said she had to pull an extra shift. So I thought I’d bring her some food. But when I got to the hospital, her department was empty, and it wasn’t even her turn to be on duty.” 

A sense of unease crept over Alexander. “Let’s head over to Joy Gardens and see what’s up.”
