Chapter 35 We’re Just Schoolmates

Suddenly, her phone buzzed again. It was a call from 

Aaron. 

Without hesitation, Emily answered and shot a pointed question. “Aaron, did you have a word with Ms. Dolton?” 

Rather than replying directly, Aaron fired back with concern. “What on earth’s going on? You skipped work and ignored your phone all afternoon. Is there something bad happening?” 

Aaron had stopped by the outpatient clinic earlier. Not finding Emily at her station, he’d been trying to reach her all afternoon. 

As a colleague in the medical field, he knew she wasn’t one to abandon her duties without cause. 

Something serious must have occurred. 

He’d been in a fret all day, even taking over her workload.

In his mind, Emily was the epitome of calm, with a sunny disposition and a soft–spoken nature. 

She wouldn’t throw a punch unless truly cornered. 

Emily gave a noncommittal grunt, not bothering with more details. 

“Is it all squared away? If not, I…” Aaron probed further. 

“All good, Aaron. Don’t worry,” Emily cut him off. 

Relieved, Aaron then asked, “Are you home yet?” 

“On the way.” 

“Don’t keep it all inside, Emily. Let it out sometimes. It helps,” Aaron said. 

“Thanks, I’ll bear that in mind.” 

Aaron said, “Drop me a line when you’re home safe.” 

“Sure thing.” 

Once the call ended, Emily’s composure crumbled. SHế:26

The words Ethan had spoken in the car came back to haunt her, filling her with a sense of suffocation and despair. 

She’d given birth to Sophia for Ethan and toiled for the Wilson family, yet all she got was heartache. 

How pitiful and absurd. 

Pulling up at Carter Manor, she spotted Ryan waiting outside. 

“Ryan, why not wait inside?” Emily quickened her pace 

towards him. 

“Running late today. What’s up?” Ryan knitted his brows, eyes clouded with worry. 

Not wanting to burden her brother, Emily fibbed, “I was knee–deep in surgery this afternoon and missed your calls.” 

Ryan gazed at her. The traces of unshed tears were still visible, but he chose not to pry. 

While strolling toward the house, Ryan suddenly broke:26

The Carter family, though not as powerful and wealthy as the Wilson family, had achieved a comfortable life through the efforts of the previous generation and Ryan, 

Emily could live a life of ease without ever having to work. 

Yet, she turned down Ryan’s suggestion, “Ryan, I’m really into being a doctor,” she stated firmly, 

Seeing her determination, Ryan didn’t press on. 

He always stood by his sister’s choices.

The following day, upon arriving at the department, Emily caught snippets of conversation from the nurses at the station. 

“Did you hear? A real heavy–hitter is coming to our hospital.” 

“I’ve heard a bit of the buzz, but is it legit? Why would someone that top–notch pick our place?”

Emily just passed by. But once she’d changed into her white coat in the locker room, an intuition struck her that it might be Aaron. 

For some inexplicable reason, she was convinced it was him. 

Just as she exited the locker room, a figure materialized in front of her, giving her a start. 

“It’s me.” Aaron’s smooth and gentle voice came. 

Emily regained her composure and looked up at Aaron. He was clad in a brand–new white coat with “Keck 

Medical Center” emblazoned on it. 

“You…” Emily regarded him, her eyes brimming with curiosity. 

Aaron flashed her a smile. “How do I look?” 

Emily remained silent, not giving an answer.

“So that’s the new doctor? Wow, he’s so good–looking and has such an air about him.” 

“He seems to know Dr. Carter, and they’re clearly close.” 

“He’s smiling at Dr. Carter. OMG, his smile is killer.” 

Emily’s cheeks heated up as she looked at Aaron. “What’s going on?” she asked. 

Aaron kept smiling, “Lunch together?” 

Before Emily could even think about saying yes or no, he added, “Consider it a welcome meal for me.” 

She found herself unable to refuse. “Alright,” she said. 

Aaron’s smile widened. “I’ll wait for you after work.” 

“Okay,” Emily replied softly. 

With a couple of light laughs, Aaron took the elevator back to his department, all eyes on him. 

Once Aaron was gone, Emily was swarmed by the others.
