Chapter 41 Doesn’t Love Me Anymore

Out of the blue, a sudden longing for Emily hit Sophia. 

Nancy had been seeing to her school–day needs lately. 

Nancy was a gem, yet she was the stage–light type. She’d never wash Sophia’s undies, croon lullabies at bedtime, or do anything but a basic ponytail for her hair. 

With those perfectly manicured nails, cooking was out of the question. Too much of Rebecca’s bland food had Sophia gagging. 

In contrast, Emily would style her hair in all sorts of fancy ways, whip up mouth–watering pastries and cakes, and always keep her undies spick–and–span. 

Ethan noticed Sophia’s mood shift and, though puzzled, spoke gently, “I ran into her today.” 

Sophia’s eyes lit up. She sat up and asked, “Was Mommy in a good mood?”

Sophia’s head drooped. “I’m afraid Mommy doesn’t love me anymore,” she murmured. 

Recalling the ruckus she’d caused at Carter Manor and Emily’s calm reaction, sending her back to Joy Gardens, Sophia felt a knot in her stomach. 

At school, a classmate had said that not caring meant not 

loving. 

As Ethan saw his daughter on the verge of tears, his heart ached. He stroked her cheek and asked tenderly, “What makes you say that?” 

Tears streamed down Sophia’s face as she whimpered, “Mommy used to cook my favorite meals, do my hair in cool styles, and teach me how to read and draw. But 

now…” 

Ethan wrapped his arms around her. “Don’t be silly. She loves you to bits,” he soothed. 

Sophia sobbed, “Mia said if someone stops caring, they don’t love you anymore. Daddy, Mommy hasn’t cooked for me in forever.”

That night at Wilson Manor, she’d slept apart from them. 

Stumped on how to comfort Sophia, Ethan asked, “How about a call to Mommy?” 

Sophia sniffled and nodded. 

Then, Ethan passed her the phone. “Tell her what’s on your mind,” he said. 

Sophia dialed Emily’s number. 

After a brief wait, the call connected. 

“What’s up?” Emily’s cool voice sent a shiver down Sophia’s spine. 

“Mommy, our kindergarten has an event during the holiday. Can you come with me?” Sophia asked, her hopes high. 

After the Carter Manor incident, she didn’t even dream of asking Emily to apologize to Nancy. 

At Sophia’s voice, Emily’s tone softened.

Sophia’s shoulders slumped, but she quickly asked, “Mommy, I’m dying for your ravioli. Can you make some tomorrow?” 

In the old days, Emily would rise at dawn to make dough, hit the market for the freshest produce, and spend hours making ravioli. 

All for Sophia’s happiness. 

Even at the mere thought of it, Emily felt a prickle of emotion, and her eyes grew misty. Still, she turned down Sophia’s plea. “I’ve got to look after my mom at home. Have Rebecca whip something up for you.” 

“Mom, what’s up with Grandma? Is she all right?” 

Sophia wasn’t genuinely concerned about Linda. She just hoped Emily would see her as the well–behaved kid. 

Not in the mood to read Sophia’s mind, Emily simply replied, “She’s doing okay. Gotta end the call. Head back to Joy Gardens soon.” 

“Mommy…” Sophia quickly stopped her.

With teary eyes, Sophia glanced at Ethan, silently begging for his support. 

Ethan had caught every word of the conversation. 

It was a shock to see Emily so distant toward their daughter. 

Hating to see Sophia heartbroken, Ethan took the phone. “Sophie wants you back home,” he said. 

Emily sneered.
