Chapter 45 Sophia Was Jealous 

Emily’s words caught Ethan off guard. 

The tight grip on her neck slackened a bit. 

As soon as the air rushed in, Emily took a huge gasp. Color gradually returned to her pale face. 

Ethan let her go and stood up a bit straighter. 

He took a step or two back. But in the bright light, the allure that once drew Emily to him had vanished. 

Emily coughed a couple of times. Glaring at Ethan, she snapped, “Ethan, you’ve ruined someone who loved you more than life.” 

There was no denying Emily harbored hatred. 

She loathed his indifference, his cold–heartedness, his womanizing, and his self–centered arrogance. 

But now, regret washed over her.

Even though she knew Ethan wouldn’t budge, Emily stood there stubbornly for ages. 

When her legs went numb, she finally shuffled out of the hall in defeat.

Outside, Emily sat in the car for a long time.

There could have been a better way, but her actions had made things worse for Aaron. 

Still, even without her outburst, Aaron’s situation wouldn’t have been great. 

Just then, Emily’s phone rang. 

Looking down, she saw it was Sophia calling. 

Emily hesitated briefly before taking the call. “Sophie, 

what’s going on?”

Sophia immediately picked up on the coolness. “Mommy, 

are you at Carter Manor?” 

Since the day she’d snapped at Emily to scram, an unsettling feeling had been bugging her. She worried she’d lost her mom’s love. 

“Not there,” Emily replied curtly. 

Sophia couldn’t hide her disappointment. “Oh, still at work? I thought I’d head over to see Grandma.” 

In truth, she was more intent on gauging Emily’s affection for her. 

A few days prior, she’d probed when Emily skipped the kindergarten event. 

But Emily had claimed she’d been swamped. 

Sophia believed that if Emily had been free, she’d have surely shown up. 

“Forget it. Your grandma needs some peace,” Emily said 

flatly.

After so many letdowns, she’d given up hope. 

Without hope, there was no room for anger. 

Sophia pressed on tentatively. “Can you pick me up from school tomorrow, Mommy?” 

Even though she adored having Nancy pick her up, and her classmates always raved about Nancy’s beauty, making her feel special, the guilt from her outburst still lingered. 

Sophia was eager to patch things up with Emily. 

Once they were good again, she could enjoy Nancy’s pick–ups without a care.

Emily wasted no time. “I’ll hang up. Get some rest.” 

And with that, she ended the call before Sophia could say

It was just past eight in the evening when Emily pulled up 

at Carter Manor. 

After parking, she stepped inside and bumped into Henry on his way out. 

“Where are you headed, Dad?” she asked. 

“Been a while since Molly went out. Gonna fetch her back,” Henry explained. 

“Let me do it. You go rest,” Emily offered. 

“Okay, then. I’ll tell the maid to whip up dinner,” Henry 

said, heading back in. 

“Okay.”
