Chapter 48 Leave the Kids Alone

Focused on playing the piano, Nancy didn’t hear anything around her. The surrounding noises, including Sophia’s cries, didn’t reach her ears at all.

Before long, the piano music gradually died away.

Having dedicated herself wholeheartedly to the piece, Nancy expected a storm of applause and heaps of praise. However, when she got up from the piano bench, all that greeted her were the chattering voices from the audience below.

Right beside her, Sophia was sniveling.

Sophie, what on earth happened?Nancy’s voice trembled with worry as she quickly crouched in front of Sophia.

Without saying a single word, Sophia brushed Nancy’s hand aside and then trotted off the stage.

Down in the audience, Emily felt a twinge in her heart upon seeing Sophia being gossiped about. As Sophia left, 1.76

Emily cast a glance at Molly, nibbled on her lower lip for a moment, and then replied, No, I’ll go after it’s over.”

The thought of ruining the show they’d painstakingly rehearsed at home time and time again just didn’t sit right with her.

Undeterred, Molly continued to try and convince her. In response, Emily tenderly stroked Molly’s face and said, Come on. It’s our turn now.”

Following this, the trio made their way towards the stage.

The classic fairy tale and their fun performance were a big hit, earning thunderous applause and widespread approval.

Off the stage, Nancy caught up with Sophia. Sophie, I’m so sorry. I didn’t plan this well. She apologized repeatedly.

Sophia’s eyes were redrimmed, and tears were streaming down her cheeks. She stared at Nancy but kept her lips

sealed.

After all, it was her own idea to play the piano and do the2

under the spotlight, had looked so charming and won many admirers. But why did things turn out so differently here in the kindergarten?

Sophia was utterly perplexed.

The enthusiastic applause then caught her attention. She turned around and saw Emily and Molly on the stage.

Is their show a success? But how come? It’s just an oldhat fairy tale!

On the stage, Emily, who had been fretting about Sophia, finally spotted her. She saw the envy and bewilderment in Sophia’s eyes.

Sophia also caught sight of her mom. A wave of envy washed over her as her eyes welled up again.

If only Emily had come with her today, would those cheers have been for her?

But then, a surge of resentment welled within her.

Emily had the time, yet she chose to be with Molly. 3/6

She hugged Nancy tightly, and Nancy, at a loss for words, just gently rubbed her back.

In no time, the show came to an end. Molly’s skit performance emerged victorious, earning her three shiny little gold stars.

Once the awardgiving ceremony concluded, the teacher declared the start of the next event: a communal

raviolimaking activity.

Given that Sophia was in the junior class and Molly was in the middlegrade class, the two classes were set up separately. Thus, during the raviolimaking, Emily and Sophia didn’t end up sitting together.

The setup was that every five kids and their parents gathered around a large round table. Each group got down to making their own ravioli, with the plan to cook and savor them later.

The junior and middlegrade classes were a stone’s throw away. As Emily worked on her ravioli, her eyes would wander over to where Sophia was from time to time.

Nancy took a seat beside Sophia. Decked out in an overl3-2

Yet, for Sophia’s sake, she decided to join in and reached for the dough. But as soon as her hand touched it, her long fingernail bent backward, and drops of blood splattered into the dough. Everyone at the table was left utterly stunned.

Hey there, lady, are you here for the kidactivity or a fashion show? You’re getting blood in the dough. How’re the kids gonna chow down on this later?one of the parents sneered.

Look at you all gussied up. You’re such a buzzkill, another parent chimed in.

What kind of mom are you? Didn’t you think to clip those nails and change out of that fancy dress before coming to kindergarten?”

I bet you didn’t even give birth to this kid. You probably found her on the street.”

Nancy, unused to such harsh words, felt her face burn red with embarrassment. Her hand throbbed painfully, and blood continued to seep out.

Hearing the snide remarks, Sophia sprang to her feet! 6:32

snapped back, Look at you, so young and already mouthing off to grownups. No class at all. Your mom’s probably too busy looking hot to snag a man and forgot to teach you some basic decency.”

The ruckus at the table was hard to ignore. Emily wasn’t sitting far off. The moment she caught wind of the cruel words, she shot up from her seat.

She marched over quickly, slung the dough bowl off the table, and fixed a fierce glare on the meanmouthed woman. If you’re gonna trashtalk, keep it to the adults. Leave the kids alone!”
