Sophia’s eyes were brimming with tears that streamed down her cheeks in a steady flow. Sniffling, she kept bobbing her head and whimpered, “I got it, Mommy.”Â
Emily tenderly brushed away the tears from the corners of her daughter’s eyes and offered a reassuring smile. “Honey, you were a real trooper up on that stage. Yeah, there was a little snag, but just having the courage to stand up there makes you a champ. People will always have their two cents, but you’ve got to have faith in yourself. If the dance didn’t go as planned, we’ll nail it next time. Those mean comments? Just let them slide off your back.”Â
The more Emily tried to soothe her, the moreÂ
inconsolable Sophia became, and her sobs grew louder and more desperate.Â
Ruffling Sophia’s hair gently, Emily said, “But always keep in mind, when you are wrong, you fix it.”Â
Sophia continued nodding, the tears showing no sign of stopping.Â

his shoulder, then shot Emily a glare. “Don’t need your reminders. I can take good care of my daughter myself.”Â
Emily’s words felt like a final farewell, as if she and Sophia would never cross paths again.Â
For some reason, Ethan felt a pang in his chest.Â
Not wanting to hear any more of Emily’s chatter, he scooped Sophia up and headed out of the school.Â
Sophia clung to Ethan’s shoulder, wailing, “Mommy, I want Mommy! Daddy, put me down. I need Mommy!”Â
Ethan paid no heed to her pleas and carried her right out of the kindergarten.Â
Once they vanished from sight, Emily quickly clapped a hand over her mouth to stifle the sobs that threatened toÂ
burst out.Â
After all, Sophia was the child she’d almost lost her life to bring into the world. How could she not yearn to be by her daughter’s side?Â
Bubit seemed Sophia didn’t really need her.Â

Just then, a hand landed on her shoulder.Â

Looking up, she saw Chloe crouching beside her. All her self–control crumbled, and she threw herself into Chloe’sÂ
arms.Â
“Chloe, am I being heartless?”Â
Chloe wrapped her arms around Emily and stroked her hair. “I get it. I’m a mom, too. You wouldn’t be doing this if you weren’t at the end of your rope.”Â
Emily’s voice was small and full of self–loathing. “Maybe I don’t even deserve to be a mom. I don’t want Sophie to grow up without me, but I just don’t know how to deal with them.”Â
A husband who didn’t love her, and a daughter who seemed indifferent to her.Â
In this family, Emily was exhausted.Â
Chloe squeezed her tightly. “Since you’ve made your choice, don’t look back. Only by moving on can you findÂ
some peace.” 3/6Â

Even though she’d set her mind to it, it tore her heart to leave Sophia–her baby she’d carried for nine months.Â
But despite the pain, she was resolved to leave them behind.Â
In the luxurious black Rolls–Royce, Ethan and Sophia were ensconced in the backseat.Â
Sophia had been crying her eyes out for quite a while before finally subsiding, yet she continued to sniffle softly.Â
Meanwhile, after a brief wait, Nancy stepped out of the school.Â
True to his gentlemanly nature, Ethan promptly got out and opened the door for her.Â
“Thanks, Ethan,” Nancy murmured, her eyes glistening with gratitude.Â
Ethan forced a smile and then circled around the car toÂ
resume his seat.Â
Sophia sat snugly in the middle, flanked by Ethan and 6:32Â

Remarkably, she didn’t let out a peep of pain. Instead, as soon as she settled in the car, she turned to Sophia with remorse. “Sophie, I really messed up. I didn’t anticipate this whole situation, and you ended up getting gossipedÂ
about. It’s on me.”Â
Sophia’s eyes welled up once again. She nestled into Nancy’s arms and said, “Nancy, it’s not your fault. I didn’t do well during the dance, and that’s why we’re in this mess. I should’ve done better.”Â
As Nancy cradled Sophia, her attention kept drifting towards Ethan. The scowl on his face was a clear sign that he was in a sour mood.Â
Paying little heed to Sophia’s words, Nancy addressed Ethan directly, “Ethan, I’m so sorry. I let Sophie down.”Â
Ethan met Nancy’s gaze, his eyes softening as he offered a reassuring smile. “It’s all good. You’ve never been a mom, and you’ve handled things pretty well. Today’s drama isn’t your doing.”Â
Sophia popped her head up from Nancy’s arms. “Yeah, you did a good job. Those people are just ignorant. AndÂ
‘s Mommy’s fault, too. She had the time but dien’t comeÂ

Despite her fear of losing Emily’s love, Sophia couldn’t help but feel a twinge of resentment when she thought about Emily winning an award with Molly.Â
Even when she was free, Emily had chosen to be absent from her event, and that was a bitter pill for Sophia to swallow.Â
