Feeling the pair safeguarding her Nancy let out a silent sigh of relief. She snuggled Sophia close and cooed, “Sophie, I’ll figure out how to take good care of you. I promise I’ll ace it next time.” 

Right then, Ethan spoke up, “You’ve worked hard enough. I’ll get someone else to take care of Sophie.” 

Nancy, not too keen on babysitting since she’d never had kids, jumped at Ethan’s suggestion. 

“Fine by me,” she replied, putting on a show of disappointment while secretly doing a little happy dance inside. 

But Sophia wasn’t on board. With a pout, she whined to Ethan, “Daddy, I don’t want anyone else. I want Nancy. I can only catch some Zs when she’s around.” 

Ethan shot her a stern look. “Nancy’s got her own stuff going on. I’ll have my mom come over.” 

Sophia’s face crumpled. “I don’t want Grandma. She’s all about the boys. She doesn’t like me.” 

It was true that Emma had a soft spot for boys, but she wasn’t exactly mean to Sophia. 

Still, that was enough for Sophia to turn up her nose at the idea.

Ethan wasn’t budging, but before he could say more, Nancy jumped in. “Ethan, let me look after Sophie. I got this.” 

Sophia practically flew into Nancy’s arms. “You’re the best, Nancy. With you, I don’t even need Mommy. Humph!” 

Nancy ruffled Sophia’s hair, her eyes brimming with affection. 

Seeing this, Ethan felt a twinge of worry. “This’ll mess with your life,” he said. 

“It’s all good. Sophie’s such an angel. I can’t leave her hanging,” Nancy beamed. 

Ethan threw up his hands. “Alright then.” 

Just then, he noticed Nancy’s injured hand was seeping blood. He’d been so wrapped up in Sophia’s issue that he’d missed it. 

His eyes widened in alarm, and he reached for her hand. “Why isn’t it bandaged?” 

Nancy’s eyes welled up as she shook her head. “I was too busy finding Sophie to think about it.” 

In reality, she’d been to the infirmary but decided against 

treatment. 

This way, having Ethan notice it would be even better, right?

Ethan panicked. “I’m taking you to the hospital now.” 

After getting Nancy’s wound treated, Ethan brought them all back to Joy Gardens. 

Rebecca rushed out to greet them, “Mr. Wilson, Ms. Thompson, Ms. Sophia Wilson.” 

Ethan gave instructions. “Make a light soup for dinner. Nancy’s finger is hurt, so keep it light and non–spicy.” 

Rebecca nodded with a smile. “Sure thing, Mr. Wilson.” 

Once inside the hall, Rebecca asked, “Do you want something else, Mr. Wilson? I know you’re not a soup person.” 

Ethan thought for a second. “No need. I’ll have the soup, too.” 

Rebecca got the hint right away. He wanted to share the meal with Nancy. 

Upstairs, Ethan sent Nancy to the guest room to rest. 

Then he took Sophia to the master bedroom and shut the door. 

Sophia plopped down on the sofa, confused. “Daddy, what’s up?” 

Ethan sat in front of her and took her hand. “Sophie, I’ve got a

“What?” Sophia nodded. 

“Who do you like better, your mom or Nancy?”

Meanwhile, Nancy had her own charm. She was gorgeous and full of charisma, making Sophia feel proud to be around her. 

Having to choose between the two was truly a tough call. 

Noticing Sophia’s struggle, Ethan tenderly caressed her cheek and softly said, “It seems your mom doesn’t need us anymore.”

Moved by her words, Ethan’s heart melted. He nuzzled Sophia’s head with his forehead. “Of course, Nancy and I will always love 

you.” 

Looking up, Sophia then queried, “What about Mommy?” 

With a smile, Ethan gently tweaked her earlobe. “I’ll make sure she keeps loving you.” 

Overwhelmed with joy, Sophia’s face beamed. She jumped up and spun around the room a few times. 

Watching his daughter’s happiness, Ethan made a silent decision. His marriage with Emily might have to continue. 

After all, the daughter was their shared treasure, and all he wanted was her well–being and happiness.
