The following day, after clocking out for lunch, Emily headed straight to a nearby eatery.

Having grown accustomed to her solitary ways, she always went about her business independently.

As soon as she stepped into the restaurant, a waiter approached with a warm greeting. Dining alone, miss?”

Emily gave a simple nod. Yeah, could you find me a seat by the window?”

As she spoke, her gaze drifted towards the window area. To her astonishment, she saw Orion getting up from a table near the glass.

There was another person sitting at the same table. Just from the silhouette, Emily instantly recognized him as Aaron.

Whatever the conversation had been about, Orion left with a

stony expression.

Rather than making her presence known to Orion, Emily discreetly kept herself out of sight. Once he had exited through the door, she motioned towards Aaron’s table and told the waiter, I’ll take that one.”

Then she made her way over to Aaron.

Settling into the seat opposite Aaron, Emily noticed he seemed to be in a daze. A wave of remorse washed over her, and she gently inquired, What’s on your mind?”

Aaron snapped back to reality and was surprised to see Emily sitting across from him. He flashed a smile and asked, How come you’re here?”

The sight of Aaron’s smile made Emily feel even more wretched. She lowered her eyes and said, I saw you here, so I thought I’d join you.”

Aaron pushed the menu towards her. Go ahead and order. My treat.”

Emily took the menu but didn’t start looking through it

right away. She stared at Aaron, and after a long moment of hesitation, she finally asked, So, what’s your plan moving forward?”

Aaron knew Emily was still fretting about the situation. He put on a nonchalant air and shrugged. No big deal. I’ll just take it as a break.”

Emily kept her eyes fixed on Aaron, her look a complicated blend of emotions.

Noticing her expression, Aaron offered a reassuring smile. Emily, it’s all good.”

But Emily’s heart was heavy. If it were truly okay, then why had he met with Orion?

She knew Aaron was just trying to spare her worry and was keeping things under wraps.

Even now, he was still looking out for her.

With eyes glistening with unshed tears, Emily looked at Aaron, her voice thick with selfreproach. I’m sorry.”

This whole mess was her doing. She felt she’d let Aaron down terribly.

Aaron was taken aback and let out a little laugh. What on earth are you apologizing for?”

Emily tilted her head up to look at him, her eyes red from the welling emotion. I’m bad news. You’d better stay away from me

from now on.”

She was well aware that if Aaron hadn’t reconnected with her, he wouldn’t have faced such a major setback.

He’d worked hard in medical school for years and finally made something of himself. But one word from Ethan ruined his

career.

Aware how tough the medical field is, Emily felt trapped under

Frowning, Aaron was obviously a bit annoyed with Emily. But she didn’t care if she’d ruffled his feathers. Placing a bank card on the table, she said, There’s no PIN. I’m truly sorry. Once we leave here, let’s go our separate ways.”

Not having a clue about how extreme Ethan might get, she believed it was the wisest choice to stop seeing Aaron.

Leaving the card behind, Emily practically bolted out of the

restaurant.

Aaron was caught off guard. By the time he came to his senses and tried to chase after her, Emily had vanished into thin air.

Emily found herself in another restaurant, worried that Aaron might follow and reject the card.

It was the least she could do for him.

Just then, someone gasped in surprise, “Emily?”

Following the sound, Emily’s eyes landed on Andrew, dressed in

a sleek suit.

He was gazing at her, a faint smile on his face, but there was a sharpness in his eyes, like a hidden blade.

Gasping for breath, Emily glared at him, too furious to utter a

Andrew sauntered over and, with feigned concern, asked, Have you eaten? If not, let’s grab a bite together.”

Emily scoffed at his false niceties. She said, I’ll soon be out of Ethan’s life, and I don’t know you well at all.”

Hearing this, Andrew raised his voice, dripping with sarcasm. Oh, so you’re trying to distance yourself from Ethan already?”

In the past, Emily had often curried favor with Andrew just to get closer to Ethan.

But now, looking at him, she found him utterly hypocritical.

Staring Andrew down, Emily replied coldly, Yes.”

Without bothering to deny Andrew’s implied accusation, she straightforwardly owned up to it.

This unexpected response left Andrew momentarily stunned. He suddenly realized that Emily had undergone a transformation. Gone was the annoying girl who used to flit around them like a bothersome insect.

However, her selfassured demeanor annoyed him, and he thought it was unfair to Ethan.

So, still pining for that pretty boy Aaron? Looks like you need a

But Emily shot him a menacing look and roared, Andrew, enough! If you have a problem, come at me. Picking on others is cowardly.”

The oncedocile kitten now showed her teeth, looking as fierce as a wild animal ready to attack.

Andrew had never seen this side of Emily before. It piqued his interest. So protective, are you?”

Aaron’s just a classmate. It’s not about being protective,Emily laughed derisively.

Andrew pretended not to hear and chuckled, saying, You’re Ethan’s wife, after all. I wouldn’t dare lay a finger on you.”

Andrew, you people are so despicable. You look all proper on the outside, but beneath that facade, you’re just a bunch of rotten scoundrels,Emily said, her eyes filled with rage.

She was no longer the girl who used to flatter Andrew.

Andrew was lost in a momentary laze as he watched the fierce and unyielding Emily.

The timid girl in his memory, who always smiled meekly at them, was truly gone.
