If Ethan’s memory served him right, the card Emily had given to Aaron was the one he’d provided for her to cover expenses while looking after Sophia. 

He was generous and transferred a lot of money to that card every month. The exact balance eluded him, yet even if it were a pittance, Ethan wasn’t about to let some freeloader out there reap the benefits. 

In his eyes, Emily handing over the bank card was a clear sign of her keeping Aaron as a kept man. 

Thus, he resolved to cancel the card. 

Lucas was taken aback but refrained from prying. All he said was, “Sure thing, Mr. Wilson.” 

Over by the flowerbed, Emily was a bundle of nerves as Aaron removed her shoe and started massaging her ankle. 

“Aaron, stop. The hospital’s just around the corner. A bit of medicine and I’ll be good as new,” she said, trying to pull him

Aaron looked up, their eyes meeting. They were so close, it felt like they might kiss. 

And this was the very moment Ethan caught sight of.

He ended the call with Lucas abruptly, spun on his heel, and strode into the private room. 

Upon his entrance, Andrew and Nancy rose to greet him. But all they were met with was his scowling visage. He was clearly in a rage and kept his mouth shut. 

Outside, Emily stepped back, flustered by the close quarters. Aaron held her ankle and studied it intently. “It’s swollen,” he 

stated. 

Emily’s face flushed crimson. She was mortified but couldn’t bring herself to resist, so she let him continue. 

The awkward silence was broken when she whispered, “Aaron, I misjudged how much Ethan cares for Nancy. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be in this fix.” 

Guilt weighed heavily on her heart. 

Aaron looked up at her, a warm smile gracing his face. “Taking your side was my call. You’ve done nothing wrong, so no need for apologies,” he reassured. 

Emily was at a loss for words. All that came out was, “Sorry.” 

Aaron didn’t want to dwell on the subject. The sunlight shone on his handsome face, making him look even more attractive.

Emily’s face burned with embarrassment. She declined, saying, “Aaron, I can manage on my own

Aaron placed his hand on hers. “Don’t be so tough. It’s okay to show a little weakness,” he coaxed. 

Touched by his kindness, Emily’s eyes welled up. “Okay, then, carry me on your back.” 

It was broad daylight, and being carried in his arms would draw too much attention. 

Her ankle throbbed painfully. Walking was out of the question. She figured she could hop to the curb and catch a cab, but with Aaron around, he wouldn’t abandon her. 

Aaron crouched down, presenting his back. 

After a moment’s hesitation, Emily climbed on. 

Aaron hoisted her up effortlessly and carried her through the crowd, a smile on his face. 

Emily was so shy that she buried her face in his back. 

Their display drew curious looks, but Aaron didn’t bat an eye. He carried her past the street corner toward the parking lot.

Emily not only didn’t push Aaron away but also blushed. Ethan was even more certain that there was something fishy going on between them. 

Suddenly, Nancy’s worried voice came from behind Ethan. “Ethan.” 

Snapping out of his thoughts, Ethan lit his cigarette. 

Nancy walked over and peered outside, but saw nothing. “What’s up?” 

Rather than explaining, Ethan simply replied, “It’s nothing.” 

He exhaled a puff of smoke, his gaze fixed into the distance as if lost in thought. 

Having been by Ethan’s side for years, Nancy sensed something was off about him. However, since he wasn’t talking, she didn’t dare to pry further. 

She said, “Andrew and the others are waiting for you to have dinner. Let’s go inside.”
