Aaron wasn’t convinced. “We’re right at the doorstep. It’s just a short distance inside. What if you end up hurting yourself on the way because I didn’t carry you in Your parents’ll be mad at me. You wouldn’t want me to be in their doghouse, right?” 

There was a playful lilt in Aaron’s voice. Emily got the hint and realized he was just looking out for her. With the mention of her parents, she didn’t have much of a leg to stand on. 

So, she placed her hand in his and said, “Well, if you insist.” 

Aaron took her hand and helped her out of the car. 

Then, he bent down in front of her, clearly meaning to piggyback

Emily was way too shy for that. She quickly grabbed his hand and said, “Aaron, just give me a hand walking in.” 

Aaron straightened up and looked at Emily. Seeing the blush on her ears, he just nodded and said, “Alright, your wish is my command.” 

With the anti–inflammatory meds Aaron had picked up for her in hand, Emily let him support her as they made their way toward Carter Manor. 

Molly had been waiting by the door like a little sentinel. Spotting them approaching, she skipped over. 

When she saw it was Emily, her face lit up like a Christmas tree. “Aunt Emily, you’re home!” 

The little girl was all smiles, but her expression quickly turned to concern when she noticed Emily’s limp. “Aunt Emily, what’s up? How’d you hurt your foot? Does it sting?” 

As she asked, Molly scurried up to Emily, took the bag of medicine from her, and slipped her tiny hand into Emily’s. 

Molly’s thoughtfulness made Emily feel warm and a little sad. 

“It’s okay, Molly. I just twisted my ankle by accident.”

Etched with worry, Molly asked, “Does it really hurt, Aunt Emily?”

Just as Molly was about to say hi, Aaron spoke up with a smile, “Not quite. Since I’m your Aunt Emily’s classmate, just call me Aaron. We don’t need to be so formal.” 

As a perceptive girl, Molly sized Aaron up. 

To her, he was tall, good–looking, and easygoing–perfect for Emily. 

After a brief moment of contemplation, she spoke up in a high–pitched voice, “Hi, Aaron!” 

The cuteness of her voice melted Aaron’s heart. He felt a little guilty as he said, “Alas, I rushed over here so quickly. I should’ve brought a gift for this first visit.” 

All Molly did was giggle and remind him, “Next time, don’t forget, Aaron.”

Molly’s shout had Henry, Linda, and Chloe hurrying to the 

entrance. 

Smiles lit up their faces as Aaron came into view. 

At the dinner table, Henry was insistent on sharing a drink with Aaron. Emily was on the verge of objecting when Aaron stopped her. “It’s fine. Just a small one.” 

With Linda egging Henry on, Emily couldn’t stop them.
