Once Ethan and Andrew took their leave, the room finally settled into a peaceful hush.

The tightness in Emily’s body melted away. Aaron, quick to notice, reached out to steady her and asked in a concerned tone, “Are you alright?”

Over by the door, Alexander stood with his eyes fixed on Aaron, sizing him up like a seasoned fighter assessing an opponent. It was clear he was testing Aaron’s strength.

“Wouldn’t dream of it.” Aaron grinned and played it off.

Not in the mood for their back–and–forth, Emily cut in, “It’s getting late, Mr. Lessing. Head home and get some rest.”

Alexander gave a noncommittal “Oh.”

After that, seeing Aaron wasn’t budging, Alexander huffed in annoyance, “Hey, buddy, can’t you take a hint? The lady’s trying to clear the room. Get it?”

However, Aaron ignored Alexander and turned his attention to Emily.

Emily met his gaze and said, “Aaron, you should go and get some shut–eye, too.”

“What if they come back?” Aaron fretted.

Emily flashed a reassuring smile. ‘I know Ethan. Once he’s out the door, he won’t be coming back.”

Aaron was in a bind. Since Emily didn’t want him to stay, it wouldn’t be proper to hang around.

After all, it wasn’t exactly appropriate for a single man and woman to be alone together for too long.

In the end, Alexander and Aaron made their exit.

Emily plopped down on the sofa and sat there in silence for what felt like ages.

Ethan’s threat kept echoing in her head. She knew he was the type to follow through on his words.

In the car, Andrew couldn’t keep his questions to himself. “Ethan, you’re really just gonna let it go like that?”

Ethan sat in the passenger seat, calm as ever. He simply replied, “Yeah.”

“You’re Ethan! You’re just gonna let Emily do you like that?” Andrew was stunned.

Ethan stared out the window, a cigarette dangling from his fingers. The glowing tip cast a faint red glow in the darkness.

His face was half–hidden in the shadows, and his voice was barely above a whisper. “She’s Sophie’s mom. Sophie needs her.”

Andrew was even more irked. “Ethan, isn’t Nancy great? Why do you still need Emily?”

After a long pause, Ethan answered, “She’s the one who brought Sophie into the world.”

“Can you seriously just brush this under the rug?”

Ethan said firmly, “All I care about is Sophie.”

But the thought fizzled out.

Night fell, and with it came Molly’s call.

The two chatted about the day’s trivialities until the maid’s voice interrupted, reminding Molly of her bath. “Hey, Molly. Where’s your mom?” Emily asked, a hint of curiosity in her voice.

Molly’s voice turned small and sad. “Mommy got a call during dinner. Some endorsement deal fell through, so she left. She didn’t even finish her meal.”
