Chapter 75 Further Her Education 

Upon her arrival at Carter Manor, the entire family was still awaiting her return. Emily joined them for a brief moment, sharing some light–hearted chatter, before making her way upstairs. 

As she was on the verge of freshening up, the phone suddenly rang. Looking down, she noticed an unfamiliar number. 

Despite the uncertainty, she answered it, and Oliver’s voice instantly filled her ear. 

“Hey, is that Emily?” 

Recognizing the voice, Emily quickly chimed in, “Professor Jones, it’s me, Emily.” 

There was an evident excitement in Oliver’s voice. “Finally managed to get in touch with you! I’ve been meaning to ask, are you thinking about applying for grad school?” 

Emily hesitated for a split second Her initial impulse was to say no, but then, she decided to be true to herself. “Yeah,” she replied simply. 

“So, any interest in becoming my Ph.D. student?” Oliver pressed

Emily responded with a hint of hesitation, “Professor Jones, I’d really love to be your student, but I’m kinda worried…”

Oliver laughed reassuringly, “That’s the spirit! As long as you’ve got the desire, there’s always a shot. There are fewer than three months left until the deadline. Are you feeling confident?” 

Recalling her top–ranked graduation performance in college, Emily said with determination, “Professor Jones, I am. I’ll do my best.” 

Oliver sounded upbeat. “Great! I’ll be waiting for the good news. I’ll set aside a spot for you.” 

Gratefully, Emily said, “Thanks, Professor Jones.” 

After hanging up, Emily realized her face was damp with tears. 

If it hadn’t been for Ethan, she would’ve surely pursued postgraduate studies. Instead, she’d chosen the path of marriage, and now, a tinge of regret gnawed at her. 

Having made the decision to further her education, Emily picked up the phone again and called Aaron. 

“Aaron, I’ve decided to apply for grad school,” she announced. 

Aaron’s voice carried both surprise and delight. “Wow, congratulations! I’m happy for you.” 

With a slightly nasal voice, Emily said, “Aaron, I’ll work hard to succeed and stand up to unfairness.”

Bright and early the next day, Emily arrived at Joy Gardens. 

While Sophia still slumbered, the aroma of freshly–made breakfast filled the air as Emily finished setting the table. 

Just then, Rebecca’s voice echoed from the doorway, “Mr. Wilson, Ms. Thompson! You’re back from your run?” 

Emily glanced over, and there stood Ethan and Nancy, dressed in matching sportswear. Nancy, with her hair pulled up in a high ponytail, showed off her slender midriff where faint traces of abs peeked through. As for Ethan, he was in top–notch shape. The sweat from their run had dampened his T–shirt, which clung to his well–defined muscles, hinting at the strength beneath. 

As they strolled through the hall door, they were the picture of a perfect pair. 

Spotting Emily, Ethan wordlessly made a beeline for the stairs. 

But Emily wasn’t about to let him go just yet. “Ethan, hold up. I gotta talk to you,” she called out.

Ethan halted and gave her a nod. ‘Okay, say it.”

What she meant by “personal stuff” was her intense preparation for grad school and Ph.D. entrance exams. She had her sights set on making a name for herself in the medical field, reaching the top of it. 

Ethan didn’t bat an eye at her decision. “It’s your call, but you gotta be here when Sophie needs you,” he said matter–of–factly. 

Emily was taken aback by his easy acceptance. “Sure thing, got it,” she replied. 

After that, Ethan turned to Nancy. “Go take a shower. I’ll be up in a bit.” 

Nancy, even without a trace of makeup, was a vision. A rosy blush spread across her cheeks as she replied, “Okay.” 

Hearing their exchange, Emily couldn’t help but let her mind wander.
