After bidding farewell to Joy Gardens, Emily made her way to the hospital for her work shift.

Once her afternoon duties were over, she reached out to Aaron, inviting him out for a bite. 

Given her plans to pursue postgraduate and doctoral studies, she was eager to ask for advice. 

Aaron was in high spirits. Without a second thought, he ordered a few of his all–time favorite dishes. Across the table, their eyes met, and the conversation flowed effortlessly. 

They reminisced about their college days, delved into their academic aspirations, shared stories about the trials of advanced studies, and even laughed about the jitters they’d felt during their very first surgeries. 

Aaron was easy to talk to, and he told Emily some funny stories from his medical career. 

And of course, he didn’t forget to slip in some useful tips for her. To keep her from getting too nervous about the application for postgraduate study, he didn’t focus solely on it. 

The atmosphere was light–hearted and relaxed. 

It had been ages since Emily had felt so at ease.

Emily took the bag gratefully. “Thanks, Aaron,” she said. 

Aaron gave her a pep talk, saying he was looking forward to seeing her make a mark in the medical field. 

Meanwhile, at the restaurant entrance, Ethan and Nancy walked

The waiter recognized Ethan right away and scurried over. “Mr. Wilson, your regular table?”

Emily and Aaron were sitting. It was far enough that their conversations wouldn’t interfere. 

Emily had her back turned to Ethan and Nancy. When Ethan sat down, he casually scanned the place and spotted Emily. 

But it didn’t really register with him. 

Since Emily had promised to return to Joy Gardens when Sophia needed her, he figured there were no more issues 

between them. 

So, he just tuned her out. 

Nancy, facing Ethan, didn’t notice Emily. 

On the other hand, Aaron saw Ethan and Nancy. 

Since they were sitting face–to–face, both saw each other but decided to keep quiet about it from Emily and Nancy. 

After placing their order, Ethan handed the menu back to the waiter. “A glass of warm water with a bit of sugar, please,” he said. 

The waiter joked, “Mr. Wilson, you’re so sweet to your girlfriend.”

Nancy blushed at the comment, while Ethan just gave a neutral expression, neither confirming nor denying. 

As Ethan was dishing out some food for Nancy, he caught sight of Emily in the distance. She was giggling softly, covering her mouth with her hand. 

In his memory, Emily used to smile at him in a way that he didn’t like. 

But now, her laughter seemed different. 

For some reason, it irked him. 

Noticing the shift in Ethan’s mood, Nancy leaned in and whispered, “What’s 

up, Ethan?” 

Forcing a smile, Ethan responded, “It’s nothing. You must be hungry. Start eating.” 

Without further inquiry, Nancy simply nodded. 

Soon enough, Emily and Aaron finished their dinner and got up to leave. 

To avoid Emily spotting Ethan, Aaron steered her out through another door. 

Ethan watched them go but didn‘ think much of it. 

He told himself he didn’t care what Emily did as long as Sophia 

was okay.
