For some strange reason, Ethan’s mind always drifted to Emily whenever he heard the name Alexander. 

Curiosity gnawed at him, and he couldn’t resist craning his neck towards the lounge to see if the glamorous woman everyone was whispering about was indeed Emily. 

There, in the middle of the dance floor, Emily and Alexander were gliding across the polished floor like they were born to dance. 

Their every twirl, dip, and sway was in perfect harmony with the gentle notes of the piano. They danced together seamlessly, looking like they belonged on the dance floor. 

It was the first time Ethan really got a good look at Emily that night. She was dressed in a bold red gown that should have been overpowering, but her soft features and gentle smile tempered the flamboyance of the color, making her the center of attention without being overbearing. 

Gone was the messy Emily he was used to seeing, with milk stains on her clothes and hair in disarray. This Emily was a revelation, a woman with a hidden charm that took his breath 

away. 

Before he could understand what he was feeling, a tightness settled in his chest, and he fell silent, lost in his thoughts.

A few minutes later, the piano piece came to an end, and the room erupted in thunderous applause. 

Meanwhile, Nancy, noticing Ethan’s preoccupation, gracefully 

made her way over to him, lifting her skirt as she walked. “Ethan,” she said, her voice soft. 

Ethan watched as Emily and Alexander separated, but Alexander seemed reluctant to let go. He took her hand and led her towards the snack area. 

Nancy followed his gaze and saw the pair. 

For a brief moment, the smile on her face faltered, but she quickly regained her composure. She nudged Ethan’s arm and asked, “What’re you thinking about, Ethan?” 

Ethan snapped out of his reverie. “Done playing?” he asked. 

Nancy nodded. “Yeah.” 

“Let’s head back then,” Ethan said, starting to move. 

But Nancy grabbed his arm. “Ethan, we haven’t taken pictures yet.” 

Ethan stopped. After a moment’s hesitation, he simply replied, “Okay.” 

As the night wore on, the banquet was winding down.

It was so enticing that he found himself wanting to stay closer. 

But the photo session was over in the blink of an eye. 

As soon as it ended, many guests started to leave. 

Emily was eager to go home, too, but Alexander blocked her path. With a charming smile, he said, “Sweetie, let me give you a 3/5

Worry immediately clouded Emily’s face. “Alright, I’ll head back right away,” she replied. 

After making the decision, she turned to Alexander. “Mr. Lessing, I’ve got to go check on my daughter. Gotta take off 

now.” 

With that, Emily grabbed her skirt and headed out of the hall in no time. 

Hearing this, Alexander quickly caught up with her. “Sweetie, let me give you a lift. And I still haven’t given you that bracelet,” he said with a charming smile. 

Emily halted in her tracks and faced Alexander seriously. “That bracelet’s way too pricey. I can’t take it.” 

“I bought that bracelet for you. It be meaningless if you don’t accept it.” Alexander looked just as earnest. 

“Alexander, you should give it to someone who really fits it. It’ll be fair to both you and the bracelet,” Emily insisted.

With those words, Emily gently rebuffed any potential romantic intentions Alexander might have had. 

Even though she wasn’t certain about Alexander’s sincerity, Emily thought it best to set things straight. 

Meanwhile, not far away, Ethan stood quietly, seemingly not looking at Emily but quietly listening to their conversation. 

Nancy, on the other hand, had been keeping a close eye on Ethan. She noticed that Ethan wasn’t as cold–shouldered toward Emily as he appeared. 

After turning down Alexander’s offer, Emily hiked up her skirt and made her way out of the banquet hall. 

Sophia was sick, and as her mother, Emily was naturally 

anxious. 

No matter how much Sophia had hurt her in the past, Emily always wished for her daughter’s well–being.
