Lisa’s POV

The leather diary felt heavy in my hands, as if the weight of my mother’s memories were pressing into my palms. The cracked cover smelled faintly of earth and old paper. I sat on the edge of the couch. My body was trembling with anticipation and dread

Rylan’s warm hand rested on mine. He was grounding me. Kael sat stiffly on the other side. His stormgray eyes were fixed on our joined hands. The tension in the room was almost unbearable

Go on,Morana urged gently. Her voice was calm but steady. The answers you seek are inside.”

I nodded slowly and turned the page

My breath caught as my mother’s words unfolded before my eyes. Her handwriting was delicate and

flowing, almost like small rivers of ink spreading across the page

I began to read aloud, but inside, it felt like I was hearing her voice

I never thought my life would change so suddenly. After the rogues attacked us, I truly believed I would die

that day. But thenhe appeared

Fenric

Even writing his name makes my heart beat faster. His presence was overwhelming. He was not only strong, but graceful, as though the battle was a dance he had mastered. His deep green eyes glowed like forest fire and his dark brown hair caught the sunlight in strands of gold

When he turned his gaze to me, I felt my breath stop. And then Selene, my wolf, whispered inside me with

a voice so certain it shook me to my core: He is ours. He is our mate

My hands trembled. My heart pounded like a drum. I had waited so long for this moment and now it had

come. I could barely believe it

When Fenric helped me to my feet, his touch was warm, gentle and careful. He looked at me as though I was the most precious thing in the world. I had never felt so cherished

He visited me after that day, again and again. His kindness was endless. He brought me flowers, gifts, and

stories of his pack, the Shadowrune pack. Each time we spoke, I felt myself falling deeper

It didn’t take long before he went to my father to ask for my hand

At first, my father hesitated. He wanted to know more about Fenric. He investigated and asked around. When he returned, he said Fenric was the Alpha of Shadowrune. A powerful pack. A proud one. My father finally agreed

When Fenric slipped a ring onto my finger, I thought my heart would burst from joy. I was going to marry

my mate

I was happy. So…. so happy

I swallowed hard. My fingers shook as I turned the next page. My chest ached for my mother’s joy, for how

full of hope she must have been

But Sierra whispered in my head. And yet you already know how it ends. Don’t let yourself be blinded by

her happiness, Lisa. Fenric was never what he seemed

I gritted my teeth. I wanted to believe my mother had been safe, that maybe for a time she had been

loved

I continued reading

Our marriage began with light and laughter. Fenric was affectionate, attentive and devoted. He kissed me

every morning. He told me I was beautiful. He said he couldn’t bear to be apart from me for even a day

I thought it was love. I thought it was everything I had ever dreamed of

But slowly, things changed

Fenric grew colder. His kisses became fewer, his touches more distant. He stopped smiling at me the way

he once did

Worse, he became possessive. He told me I should not leave the mansion. At first, he said it was to keep me safe. Then he said he would miss me too much if I visited my parents. I believed him. I told myself it was because he loved me deeply

But as the days passed, the walls around me began to close in. I was a Luna who never saw her people. I was a wife trapped in a gilded cage

The Shadowrune pack feltstrange. The wolves avoided me. When I tried to speak to them, they fled as if

I carried a curse. I thought perhaps they did not see me as their Luna

But I swore to myself I would win them over. I wanted to belong. I wanted to be worthy of Fenric’s world

Stillsomething gnawed at me. Something was wrong

I had never once seen any of them shift

Not one

I gasped softly. The words on the page chilled me to the bone

They never shifted?I whispered aloud

Morana’s lips pressed into a tight line, but she said nothing. Kael’s eyes darkened. His jaw was tense. Rylan squeezed my hand tighter

Keep reading.” Morana said softly

So I did

In my loneliness, I found a friend

Her name was Morana. She was older and wise. She had long silver hair and eyes that seemed to see into

my soul. She had just returned from a long journey. She hadn’t known Fenric had gotten married in her

absence

When she met me, her reaction was strange. She frowned and said, But you are a werewolf. Why would

Fenric marry one of your kind?”

Before I could ask more, Fenric appeared and quickly pulled her away.

Something passed between them. Something secret

When I asked Morana about it later, she brushed it aside. I was only surprised. I didn’t expect Fenric to

find his mate.”

But her tone was uneasy. She knew something. She was hiding it

Then, one night, I saw her fix a broken vase without even touching it. The shards lifted and mended themselves before my eyes. My breath caught. Werewolves could not do that

When she saw my shock, she pressed a finger to her lips. You must never tell Fenric. If he knew I revealed

this, he would not spare me. Or you.”

I swore to keep her secret

That night, she told me the truth

This is not the Shadowrune pack, she whispered. It is the Shadowrune Coven. Fenric is not an Alpha. He is a warlock, the leader of this coven. These are not werewolves around you, Althea. They are witches and

warlocks.”

Her words left me trembling

I told her that she must be mistaken. Fenric was my mate. My wolf had chosen him. Selene had called him

ours

But Morana shook her head. Your mate cannot be a warlock. Fenric knows powerful spells. He could have tricked you. He could have created a false mate bond, Althea. One woven with dark magic.”

I could not believe her. I thought that perhaps she wanted to turn me against him. Perhaps she was jealous

1 clung to the bond I felt and to the man I had once loved

I told myself things would get better. That if I gave him a child, maybe his heart would soften again

So I prayed, and I hoped. And at last, I was blessed with a child growing inside me

My hand trembled as I touched the page

My chest ached

She was pregnant with me,” I whispered

Rylan’s thumb brushed soothing circles on the back of my hand

But Kael’s stare burned into me

I turned the page again

I thought that the baby would heal us. I thought that Fenric would smile again and would love me as he

once had

But instead, the shadows grew

One night, Morana came to me in secret. She begged me to follow her. You must see the truth with your

own eyes,” she said

I hesitated but something in her voice convinced me

She led me deep underground, to a cellar I had never known existed. We hid in the darkness and listened

Fenric’s voice carried through the air. It was cold and ruthless

He was speaking of me

This full moon, I will spill her blood,he said. Her sacrifice will break the curse on our coven once and for

all.”

My breath froze in my chest

He wanted to kill me

His own wife. His own mate. The child I carried. None of it mattered

Morana clutched my arm and whispered, Now you see. He bewitched you. The bond you feel….it isn’t real. You must escape, Althea. Or you will die.”

Tears blurred my eyes. I could not breathe. The man I loved, the man I thought was my mate, was nothing

but a monster

That night, Morana helped me pack. She cloaked me with her spells and guided me through hidden

I fled

1 returned to Night Crest. I gave birth to my daughter. My beautiful Lisa. My reason to keep breathing

I swore I would protect her. I swore I would keep her safe from him….from Fenric

But even nowI fear it may not be enough

I never expected that he would do something so cruel

I lost everything because of him

The words ended abruptly

The diary slipped from my fingers and landed on my lap. My vision blurred with tears

He wanted to sacrifice her,I whispered hoarsely. He would have killed herand me.”

My chest heaved with emotion

Sierra’s voice was dark. Now you see the truth. Fenric is more dangerous than you ever knew

I nodded numbly. My whole body was trembling

Rylan wrapped his arms around me. LisaHis voice cracked. I swear on my life, I will never let him

touch you. Not ever.”

Kael’s eyes burned as he watched us. His fists clenched at his sides. His voice was sharp. And that is why

I will not leave. Not while Fenric still breathes.”

The air grew heavy with tension

I held the diary against my chest, feeling my mother’s words echoing inside me like thunder

The chapter of her life had ended in betrayal and terror

And minemine was only beginning

“The Wolf Who Couldn’t Shift”

1. The Outcast of Nightshade Pack

Lisa had always been the outcast of her own home — a wolf without a wolf.

In the Nightshade Pack, turning twenty-one meant power, dominance, and pride. Every werewolf her age had already shifted, embracing their animal half. But Lisa hadn’t. Her wolf had never emerged.

Because of that, she was treated as an anomaly, a failure, and a source of shame.
Her parents ignored her. The pack ridiculed her. Even her own blood — her beautiful, perfect sister Roxanne — made her life a living nightmare.

Roxanne was everything Lisa wasn’t: strong, admired, and loved. The perfect daughter. The shining jewel of the family. And to make matters worse, Roxanne was dating Kael Blackthorn, the Alpha’s son — a man everyone respected and desired.

For Lisa, that was the final reminder of her insignificance. Every time she saw them together, it only highlighted the chasm between their worlds.

2. A Celebration That Wasn’t Hers

That night was Roxanne’s birthday, and their mother had transformed their home into a grand venue — lights, laughter, and music filled the air. Roxanne had been gifted a stunning red gown, handpicked by their mother, while Lisa was given a single task: serve the guests.

No one remembered Lisa’s birthday a few months ago. No cake. No presents. No “happy birthday.” Her parents had said it plainly before — Roxanne came first.
Lisa was simply expected to sacrifice and stay silent.

Still, she wanted to look decent. She chose a modest navy-blue dress, applied light makeup, and promised herself she wouldn’t let the night break her.

But the universe — or rather, Roxanne — had other plans.

3. Sister Cruelty

The door burst open, and Roxanne walked in like a queen entering a servant’s quarters. Her crimson lips curved into a smirk.

“What are you doing? You should be downstairs, not wasting time,” she sneered.

“I’ll be down in a minute,” Lisa replied softly, trying to keep her calm.

Roxanne’s eyes glinted with malice. Without warning, she snatched Lisa’s face cream from the dresser and poured it all over her dress.

Lisa gasped as the thick cream soaked through the fabric, staining it completely.

“Roxanne!” she cried, panic and disbelief trembling in her voice. “Why would you do that?”

“Because you’re embarrassing,” Roxanne replied coldly. “You think dressing up will make people notice you? No one cares what you look like, Lisa. You’re nothing but a burden.”

Tears blurred Lisa’s vision as she ran downstairs, desperate for justice. But when she told their mother what had happened, she was met with scorn.

“Roxanne would never do that,” her mother said sharply. “Stop making excuses. Go change and get back to work.”

And there Roxanne stood beside her, smug and triumphant, watching Lisa break in silence.

4. The Invisible Sister

Lisa changed into an old, faded dress — dull and shapeless.
When she finally entered the main hall, guests were already laughing and drinking, the music echoing through the night.

She moved quietly among them, balancing trays and forcing smiles. She served drinks, ignored whispers, and endured Roxanne’s cruel jokes.

One of Roxanne’s friends gave Lisa a small, pitying smile.
“Oh, you must be Lisa, right? Roxanne’s sister?”

Before Lisa could answer, Roxanne appeared and laughed loudly.
“Don’t bother talking to her! She’s just the help tonight — our little maid.”

Her friends giggled, glancing at Lisa like she was a joke.
“She’s really your sister?” one asked. “She doesn’t even look like she belongs here.”

“She doesn’t,” Roxanne said proudly. “She’s an embarrassment to the family.”

The laughter burned like fire in Lisa’s ears. But she didn’t fight back.
She had learned long ago that silence hurt less than hope.

5. The Alpha’s Arrival

Suddenly, the noise died down. All eyes turned toward the entrance.

The Alpha, Luna, and their son Kael Blackthorn — Roxanne’s boyfriend — had arrived. Their presence demanded respect, their aura commanding silence.

Kael was striking — tall, dark-haired, eyes sharp and unreadable. Power radiated from him effortlessly.
He walked straight to Roxanne, pulling her into his arms, kissing her in front of everyone.

The crowd cheered. Roxanne basked in the attention like it was her birthright.

Lisa’s stomach twisted. Not out of jealousy — but from the ache of being so invisible even to those who shared her blood.

“Lisa!” Roxanne called, her tone dripping with authority. “Bring drinks for me and Kael.”

Lisa obeyed. She returned with a tray of crystal glasses, keeping her head down. But when she approached, she felt his gaze.

Kael was watching her.

“Is that your sister?” he asked, his voice low and deep. “What’s her name? I don’t think I’ve seen her before.”

Roxanne laughed, tightening her arm around him.
“Oh, don’t bother. She’s not important. Just the family failure. Focus on me.”

Then she kissed him again — possessive, showy, territorial.

6. The Breaking Point

Something inside Lisa snapped.

For years, she had swallowed humiliation, endured cruelty, and told herself it didn’t matter. But as she stood there, watching her sister claim everything — their parents’ love, the pack’s respect, even Kael’s attention — something deep within her stirred.

Maybe it was anger. Maybe it was pain. Maybe it was the first stirrings of the wolf she thought she’d never have.

But it was there — hot, alive, awake.

She placed the tray down calmly, ignoring Roxanne’s voice calling after her.
She walked away — past the laughter, past the whispers, past every face that had ever looked at her with pity.

They could laugh. They could mock.
But one day, they would see.

7. A Shift Waiting to Happen

As the night went on, Lisa slipped quietly outside. The cool air hit her face, carrying the scent of pine and moonlight.

The party’s laughter echoed behind her, but she barely heard it. Her heart pounded with a strange rhythm, her blood burning beneath her skin.

Something was happening — a pull in her soul, a whisper in her bones.

She tilted her head toward the moon, feeling its glow on her skin.
For the first time in her life, she didn’t feel weak. She felt something ancient stirring inside her, clawing to be free.

Maybe her wolf wasn’t gone.
Maybe it had just been waiting — for the moment Lisa stopped begging to be seen, and started seeing herself.

8. The Beginning of Change

Inside, the celebration continued. Roxanne laughed, oblivious to the storm brewing.

Kael’s eyes flicked toward the window where Lisa stood in the moonlight. For a brief second, something unreadable crossed his expression — curiosity, or maybe recognition.

He didn’t know it yet. None of them did.
But the quiet, invisible girl they had mocked all her life was about to become something far greater than any of them could imagine.

Because sometimes, the wolves who are late to shift…
Are the ones destined to lead the pack.
