Morana’s POV
The battlefield had gone eerily quiet. One heartbeat ago, the forest had been alive with snarls, screams, and the clash of fangs and claws. But now, the monstrous beasts, those twisted shadows with red eyes and dripping maws, were gone. They had melted back into the darkness as if they had never been here at
all
I stood still. The silver fire was still burning faintly at my fingertips. My chest was heaving from the fight. My cloak clung to my body with sweat and blood. My throat was raw from chanting spells. My heart was racing but not just from exhaustion. Something was wrong.
I narrowed my eyes at the empty clearing. “Why… would they retreat?” I whispered aloud, though no one
was near enough to answer.
Shadows never pulled back unless commanded. Fenric’s creations fought until they were destroyed. Yet these had vanished, slipping away into the forest with unnerving swiftness. My instincts screamed that this was no victory. This was a trick.
Kael shifted back into his human form. His chest was heaving and blood streaked his bare skin. His eyes burned with frustration as he scanned the ruins. “Where is Lisa?” he demanded.
Rylan followed. He shifted back into his tall and muscular form. His black hair was damp with sweat. His voice trembled slightly as he echoed the question. “Where’s Lisa?” His gaze darted across the broken stones. His wolf had been restless during the fight. I could feel it. Now I understood why.
Kael lifted a hand suddenly. His sharp gaze locked on the altar. “There,” he said while pointing.
I turned quickly and my stomach dropped.
Lisa’s body was sprawled on the cold earth beside the black stone. Her cloak was tangled around her. Her hair fanned across the moss. She looked pale….deathly pale. She lay still.
For a breath, my heart seized in my chest. Had we lost her? Was it already too late?
But Kael’s voice broke the silence. “She is there. Hurry!”
Both men bolted toward her. I followed close behind. My silver skirts whipped against my legs as I ran. My
fingers still burned with power, ready to strike at anything that dared approach us.
Rylan dropped to his knees beside Lisa and gathered her gently against him. “Lisa!” His voice cracked with
urgency. He shook her lightly. “Lisa, wake up. Please wake up.”
Kael knelt on her other side. He pressed his ear close to her chest. His jaw tightened. “She is alive,” he said at last. “Her heartbeat is there. Faint, but there.”
I felt relieved. I could feel a knot loosening in my chest. But still, my unease didn’t fade. Something was wrong. I could feel it deep in my bones.

“I’ll try to wake her,” I said firmly and reached forward. My hands glowed faintly with silver as I prepared at
charm to stir her consciousness.
But before I could touch her, Lisa’s eyes flew open.
A shiver rushed down my spine. Her lashes fluttered, and then, her lips stretched into a wide smile. A
smile too wide….. too bright for a girl who had just been lying cold and lifeless. My breath caught.
Something about that smile unsettled me.
Rylan let out a shaky breath of relief and pulled her closer. “Thank the goddess. You scared me,” he murmured. “Are you all right? Does anything hurt?”
Lisa tilted her head slightly. Her eyes gleamed strangely in the moonlight. Then, she nodded slowly. “Yes.
I’m fine. What… what happened?” Her voice sounded calm…..too calm.
Kael answered before I could. His tone was clipped. His gaze darted toward the treeline. “We were
attacked. Those… things came out of the forest. Wolves…but not normal wolves. They swarmed us.”
Lisa blinked. She tilted her head again. “Oh. I don’t remember.”
Her smile lingered.
I frowned. The unease in my chest grew sharper. Something about her expression was not right. She was
too calm… too collected.
I cut in before Kael could say more. “Those were not simply wild creatures,” I said sharply. “They were
Fenric’s shadows. He sent them. That much I am certain.” My voice carried a weight that made both men
look at me.
Kael’s jaw tightened. “Perhaps. But they’re gone now. Fortunately for us, they disappeared on their own. If they had stayed, we wouldn’t have survived. Not in such numbers. We would have been overrun.”
His words were true but they didn’t comfort me. If anything, they made my unease worse. Shadows did
not simply retreat. Not unless their master wanted them to.
Inside my mind, a whisper of doubt grew louder. This was no victory. This was distraction. A veil drawn across our eyes. What had we missed? What had Fenric stolen while we were fighting his illusions?
My gaze slid back to Lisa. She sat up with Rylan’s help. Her smile hadn’t faded. Her cheeks were flushed now, as if with excitement. Yet her eyes… there was something hollow in them. Something I couldn’t quite
name.
I forced myself to focus. “We cannot waste more time,” I said briskly. “The altar is before us. The shadows may return at any moment. We must begin the ritual now. If Fenric is truly behind this, then every heartbeat we delay gives him strength.”
Rylan’s head snapped toward me. His arm tightened around Lisa protectively. “No,” Lisa said suddenly, her voice soft but firm. “I… I don’t feel well. My body is weak. The battle drained me. Can’t we… come back
another time?”

I shook my head sharply. “No. We are here. The altar is ready. The bloodline is gathered. This moment may not come again. We must finish this, Lisa. Do you want to risk the shadows returning? Do you want to face
another wave like this one?”
Her smile faltered for the first time. But only for a breath. Then it returned, softer….almost playful. “I said no. Not today. I can’t. I’m too weak.”
Rylan pressed a hand against her back. His gaze was fierce on me. “She’s right. She’s not well. We’ll come
back. The altar will still be here tomorrow, won’t it?”
I bit down on my frustration. “Tomorrow may be too late,” I snapped. My voice rang through the ruins. “You don’t understand how quickly Fenric works. Every moment he breathes, the curse deepens. If we delay….”
Lisa cut me off with a gentle laugh. A laugh that sent another chill racing down my spine. “Morana, please. You worry too much. We’ll be fine. Won’t we, Rylan?”
He nodded at once. His eyes never left her face. “Yes. We’ll come back when she is ready.”
Kael said nothing but his gaze lingered on Lisa. His brow was furrowed as if he too sensed something was strange but couldn’t put it into words.
I looked at her again. Her skin was pale. Her eyes were gleaming too brightly. She appeared weak, yes, but her smile… her smile told another story. Something about her was different….something was wrong.
But I couldn’t say what. Not yet.
Finally, I exhaled slowly and forced my voice into calm. “Fine. If you are too weak, then we’ll return another
day. But I warn you all, Fenric is cunning. He will not stop. This battle tonight… it may have been nothing
more than a distraction.”
Neither Kael nor Rylan answered. Their attention was on Lisa. Rylan brushed her hair back tenderly. He
was murmuring to her as if she were made of glass.
I turned my gaze back toward the altar. Its dark surface pulsed faintly, as though it had tasted something
already. My stomach tightened.
Something was wrong here. Very wrong.
I followed them as we began to leave the ruins but unease gnawed at me with every step. My instincts screamed that Fenric had already made his move.
And as Lisa walked between Rylan and Kael, leaning into them with that strange and wide smile still
curving her lips, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the girl at our side… was not truly Lisa at all.
The night air pressed down on me. The shadows of the forest seemed to whisper as we passed. My heart
beat faster.
Fenric was cunning. And I had the sinking feeling that tonight, we had all played into his hands.
