Chapter 101

Aurelia could smell the heavy stench of alcohol on him. He had probably just come from some pub.

Instinctively, she blocked the doorway to try and keep him out.

But Cassian was faster. He roughly shoved her aside and marched right into the apartment.

The rented apartment was tiny. It consisted of one bedroom, a living room, a kitchen, and a bathroom.

The whole place was so compact that Cassian searched every corner in under a minute.

Aurelia didn’t bother stopping him. Instead, she spent the time sending a phone message.

After scouring the place and finding no one else, Cassian turned his attention to Aurelia.

Aurelia was busy texting and so did not notice Cassian closing in on her.

By the time she realized, he was already next to her.

Aurelia instinctively backed away defensively, only to find her back against the door panel.

She was trapped.

The next thing she knew, Cassian’s body pressed her down against the door.

A grown man like him was very strong. Aurelia didn’t stand a chance against him.

Cassian had her trapped completely under his body. He then grabbed her chin and plunged his lips into hers brusquely.

That mix of his familiar scent and the reek of booze hit Aurelia so hard that her eyes watered.

She instinctively tried to slap him across the face.

However, Cassian preempted her move and grabbed her arm before yanking it high over her head.

Her whole body was raised as a result. It only made it easier for the man to deepen the kiss, and he became totally unrestrained.

Aurelia struggled with all her might in vain. In the end, she resorted to biting him.

And she did not hold back when she bit.

However, her act of defiance didn’t stop his madness. It simply pissed him off even more.

He moved his mouth downwards and sank his teeth into her collarbone.

He was equally vicious in his retaliation.

Aurelia cried out in pain and struggled harder. Cassian, are you out of your mind? Let me go!”

Though Cassian didn’t say anything, his whole body was emanating the destructive vibe of pure rage.

His hand, which had been pressing on her back, suddenly grabbed her nightgown and tore it violently.

The sound of ripping fabric jolted Aurelia, and her nerves finally snapped.

With everything she had, she gave Cassian a vicious slap across the face.

This time, he didn’t try to dodge. He took the strike squarely, and the impact flung his face sideways.

Aurelia was gasping for breath at this point. Her palm stung from the slap as well.

She dug her nails into her palm, desperately trying to keep her emotions from spilling over.

She had barely managed to mend her badly broken heart, yet it was swiftly crushed into pieces again by this man.

Perhaps that slap finally brought Cassian back to his senses.

He released his grip on her and took a step back.

Aurelia could taste blood on her lips, but it wasn’t hers. It was Cassian’s.

The collar of her nightgown was torn, and one of her shoulders was exposed.

On her collarbone, where Cassian had bitten her, an arc of teeth marks was clearly visible.

Against her fair skin, those marks stood out like a sore thumb.

Cassian stared at the angry red marks intently.

He felt as if he was being choked. He couldn’t say a single word.

They both stood there for what seemed like an eternity.

At last, Aurelia straightened her nightgown and then opened the door. Scram!”

To Cassian, her voice sounded very far away and indistinct.

Like her voice, her physical self, barely covered by that torn garment, also seemed to be disintegrating.

Cassian’s heart felt as if it had been pierced by something sharp as he took in this sight.

After several seconds, he finally mumbled, Sorry. I had too much to drink.”

So just because you got drunk, you think you can show up at my place and act like a lunatic?Aurelia yelled at him.

With a tone overflowing with derision, she added, Cassian, you make me sick!”

Cassian fell silent again for several seconds.

Scram! Don’t ever come back and bother me! Don’t make me regret ever loving you!Aurelia didn’t mince her words.

Cassian’s throat bobbed a few times. It seemed like he wanted to say something, but couldn’t find the right words.

Before he could speak, a phone rang. It was a call from Tessa.

When Tessa arrived, she found Cassian sitting by the roadside flowerbed with a lit cigarette.

The cigarette that had almost completely burned down was tucked between his fingers and hadn’t been moved for a long

time.

When a night breeze wafted by, the long stack of ashes with sparks toppled onto the back of his hand. The sudden hot burning sensation jolted him back to his senses.

The dazed look in Cassian’s eyes faded away as he looked down at the angry red mark the ash left on his thin hand.

It was clear that he couldn’t feel a thing. He simply lifted the cigarette to his lips and took a few more puffs blankly.

Finally, he stubbed out the spent cigarette in the flowerbed.

Cassian…” Tessa finally called out to him.

When Cassian straightened up, he was back to his usual unflappable, distant, and aloof self.

He turned to her. Why are you here?”

His voice sounded more hoarse than usual, probably because he smoked too much earlier.

Tessa hesitated before replying, Aurelia messaged me. She said you were here and wanted me to come get you.”

Cassian wasn’t surprised by her answer.

Aurelia was really determined to remain his ex.

She had no qualms about breaking up with him at all. And after that, she never looked back.

She wanted absolutely nothing to do with him.

Let’s go.Cassian didn’t explain anything.

Tessa had many questions that she wanted badly to ask him.

Why did he come to Aurelia’s place? What happened between them? And why did Aurelia text her to come pick him up?

But all these questions were stuck in her throat. She just couldn’t bring herself to ask him.

And Cassian didn’t show any indication that he would give her an explanation.

Thus, Tessa could only swallow her doubts. She quickened her pace to catch up with Cassian. Try not to drink so much next

time.”

Cassian only grunted in response.

As soon as he got in the car, Cassian closed his eyes. His face was devoid of expression, though the standoffish haughtiness was clearly discernible.

As Tessa turned the car around, she noticed a familiar vehicle parked in the open car parking lot across the street.

Puzzled, she wondered, What’s Gideon’s car doing here?‘

Aurelia did not sleep well that night. She kept tossing and turning in bed.

And when she finally did doze off, her sleep was beset by dreams.

She didn’t dream about those early days of hardships when she and Cassian were building their business from scratch, supporting each other through thick and thin.

Instead, she dreamed of the time the two of them got stranded together in a blizzard up north while trying to close a deal.

Surely Cassian must have felt something for her back then?

The blizzard came out of nowhere, and their car broke down, leaving them stranded on a winding mountain road.

There was also no cell signal, and it was in the middle of the night. No help was forthcoming.

All they could do was wait until morning before trying to make their way back.

Winter up north was bitterly cold. Both she and Cassian hailed from the south, and this was the first time they experienced such bonepiercingly biting cold weather.

Cassian held Aurelia in his arms the whole night, doing everything he could to keep her warm with his own body.

But up against such biting winter cold, his efforts were futile.

Aurelia was so affected by the cold that she began to show signs of hypothermia.

By chance, Cassian found a lighter in the car.

He kept warming his hands with the flame and then pressing his heated palms on Aurelia’s neck, underarms, belly, and any spot where her vital organs were located to keep her warm

She didn’t know whether his strategy worked.

What she did know was that she regained some lucidity and subconsciously held onto his warm hands, all the while murmuring, So warm”

Whenever the warmth faded from his hands, Cassian would pull them back, use the lighter to make his palms very warm again, before giving them to Aurelia.

Throughout the whole process, Aurelia was totally unaware of what transpired.

It was only after they were rescued and the doctors gave them a checkup that she learned the truth.

She found out Cassian’s palms were covered in blisters due to the repeated heating with the lighter flame.

The doctor said if Cassian hadn’t done that, Aurelia might not have survived.

As Aurelia held Cassian’s burnt hands, her heart ached so badly it felt like her chest might burst from the pain.

It was at that juncture that she swore to herself that she would treasure Cassian with all her heart for the rest of her life.
