Tessa knew Alina was setting her up, so she played along. “Sure, you two can eat. Cassian and I will go for a stroll.” 

Cassian had no objections. He always put Tessa first. 

Before Tessa left, Alina slipped something into her hand when Cassian and Daniel weren’t looking. 

Tessa’s face flushed red when she saw what it was. “Mom!” 

“Better safe than sorry,” Alina whispered with a wink. 

Tessa discreetly stuffed it into her bag, said goodbye, and left with Cassian. 

Once the kids were gone, Alina’s smile faded. 

She pushed aside the dipping sauce Daniel had made for her, giving him a mock–serious look. “Alright, spill it. What’s with the sudden craving for hot pot?” 

Daniel calmly picked up some food, took a slow bite, and said, “I just felt like it. Does there always have to be a reason?” 

Alina stared hard at him, trying to see through whatever he was hiding. 

But Daniel just kept his cool, quietly eating his food. 

Finally, Alina shot him a glare. “Don’t think I don’t know what you’re up to. And don’t forget who got you where you are today!”

On the other hand, Aurelia took Ella to her go–to spot for some soup. 

While they were eating, Aurelia noticed Ella kept spacing out and seemed absent–minded. She asked, “Are you not feeling well?” 

Ella quickly shook her head. “No, I’m really fine. Didn’t you already see the check–up results?” 

“So why do you keep zoning out? You’ve been like this ever since we left the hot pot restaurant,” Aurelia pressed. 

“You’re overthinking it,” Ella replied. 

Aurelia hoped she really was just being too sensitive. 

After they finished eating, Aurelia called the waiter over for the bill, but was told that a certain Mr. Lautner had already taken care of it.

Aurelia immediately guessed it was Wade, so she sent him a quick message to thank him.

Aurelia sighed. “Mom, are you running a background check on him?” 

“I’m not running a background check, I’m just trying to marry you off, her mom shot back. 

“So, is Wade trying to win your favor?” Ella asked. 

Aurelia didn’t answer. 

Ella immediately knew she’d hit the mark. “When are you going to bring him over for me to meet? 

“I’m really not interested, Aurelia said. It was the first time she’d ever felt her mom trying to play matchmaker. 

No wonder it felt like Wade was eager. It seemed like he really was kind of anxious about it 

Ella tried to persuade her, “You should really give dating a chance. Love is a wonderful thing. And the best part? You’ll have someone who’s absolutely crazy about you.” 

“Then how come you never found someone for yourself?” Aurelia shot back, teasing. 

“I was afraid it might not be good for you.” Ella replied gently. 

Ella always had plenty of admirers, but she never accepted any of them as she was worried about how it might affect Aurelia as she grew up. 

That made Aurelia’s heart melt. 

Growing up with just her mother, Aurelia never felt unloved. Her mother’s love was always more than enough. 

On Wednesday, Jessica came to Ashmont. 

Aurelia made sure to clear her schedule to have dinner with Jessica, and originally booked a spot at a sushi restaurant. But Jessica said she wanted to have a drink or two, so Aurelia switched the reservation to a private 

club. 

When they met up, Aurelia couldn’t help but notice that Jessica’s boyfriend had changed again.

Jessica never cared about keeping things private around Aurelia. The moment they got into the private room, she plopped herself right onto the guy’s lap and started a full–on makeout session. 

Even though Aurelia had seen Jessica’s wild side plenty of times, she still felt a bit awkward. She excused herself to make a call and stepped out. 

She lingered outside a little longer on purpose, using the chance to hop on a conference call with Scott. 

Meanwhile, in another private room, Karlie was looking glum. Liam had shot her down, and she was in a pretty sour mood. 

She’d called her friends over to hang out, charging it all to Honoria Capital. This wasn’t the first time she had done that, but because of Tessa, Cassian never called her out. 

Karlie was getting bolder by the day. Whenever she took her friends out, it was always to the priciest, flashiest places in town. It was always high–end restaurants and top–quality liquor. That’s how Karlie ended up with a whole party crowd hyping her up wherever she went. 

Karlie enjoyed the attention, so she was always the one footing the bill, regardless of her mood. 

Today, Karlie was definitely in a bad mood since Liam was giving her the cold shoulder. 

Her friends tried to cheer her up, saying she should move on, as there were plenty of fish in the sea. 

“You guys don’t get it! Liam’s got everything going for him. I’m not letting him go!” Karlie shot back. 

“Then chase after him!” one of her friends urged. 

Karlie fumed, “But he’s totally obsessed with that vixen! He won’t even look my way!” 

“We’ll handle that vixen for you!” one of Karlie’s friends volunteered. 

This crew was full of troublemakers. They were always getting into sketchy business behind closed doors.

“Absolutely! You’re our queen, Karlie. Whatever you say goes. Just send me her details later,” her friend promised. 

“We’ve got a chance,” Karlie said, a cold, poisonous edge in her eyes. 

Karlie had just caught sight of Aurelia and hence knew Aurelia was here at the club too. 

Her crew was actually ready to do whatever she ordered, and the thrill of having everyone at her command made Karlie almost giddy.

They quickly cooked up a plan and jumped right into action. 

Meanwhile, Karlie called Tessa and casually mentioned she’d run into Aurelia at the club.

Tessa immediately knew Karlie’s intentions. Yet, Tessa did not confront her and merely told her not to stir up any trouble. 

Karlie replied snugly, “I’m not getting involved. My hands are clean. Even if someone looks into it, they won’t trace anything back to me. Relax, Tessa.” 

The more Karlie thought about it, the more hyped she got, clutching her phone. “Just sit back and enjoy the drama, Tessa. Figure out a way to get Cassian and Liam over here, I want everyone to see Aurelia acting all promiscuous with some guy.” 

Tessa felt her throat tighten. 

She knew that Aurelia would no longer be able to show her face in Ashmont if that happened. That way, Tessal would have one less serious rival, and Cassian’s old feelings for Aurelia would finally be history. 

As for Gideon, he would not even spare Aurelia a glance after that. 

The more Tessa thought about it, the more hyped she got. She shot back, “I’ll figure out a way to get them over there. Just be quick and keep it low–key. Don’t get caught.” 

“Don’t worry, I’ve got this,” Karlie replied with a smug grin. 

Then, Karlie hung up and turned to her crew. “It’s go time.” 

Her crew was fired up, totally ready to follow her lead. They sprang into action without a second thought. 

Just imagining Aurelia crashing and burning tonight had Karlie feeling like she was walking on clouds. With Aurelia out of the picture, Tessa and Cassian would finally be stable, and Tessa’s career would take off. 

On the other hand, Liam would finally notice Tessa for real. 

Just picturing all that made Karlie feel invincible. It was like nothing could stop her now.
