But Miranda told her that no one else was hurt. 

Aurelia was puzzled. 

She could have sworn she caught the sharp tang of blood in the air, and heard someone let out a muffled grunt. 

Every time Aurelia remembered that grunt, doubt crept in again. 

It felt so familiar. 

Familiar enough to make her doubt herself. 

She kept wondering if she was just imagining it. 

Things had been so chaotic. Maybe her mind was just playing tricks on her. 

Aurelia tried to shake off that weird feeling. 

Jasper messaged Aurelia, letting her know the files were ready and checking if anything was missing. 

Aurelia glanced over them, made sure everything was there, and sent back an “OK.” 

She should’ve just exited the chat window, but she hesitated for a moment. She wanted to ask him a question. 

But as soon as she started typing Cassian’s name, Aurelia snapped back to reality. She quickly deleted it and exited the chat window. 

Twenty–four hours ago, Jasper had posted on Instagram. 

He’d sent his best wishes to Cassian and Tessa for their engagement. 

In the photo, Tessa was beaming with happiness. 

Cassian was looking at her with such deep affection. 

Aurelia closed WhatsApp, and that lingering doubt in her heart finally faded away. 

Sure enough, she thought too much, 

She actually felt that the person who saved her was Cassian. 

‘I really need to stop getting ahead of myself, she sighed. 

Zofia came by to see Aurelia again that afternoon. She looked even more drained than last time, her face tired and worn. 

Trailing behind her was a little girl, probably around seven or eight years old. 

The girl had these big, round eyes, but her gaze was shy and a little scared. 

She kept a tight grip on Zofia’s sleeve, sticking close like she was afraid to let go for even a second. 

As soon as she caught Aurelia looking her way, she quickly hid behind Zofia. 

Zofia explained that the girl was an orphan she’d taken under her wing, and she was on the autism spectrum. 

That night at the charity gala, when Zofia fainted, it scared the little girl so much that she’s been clinging to her ever since,

“It’s alright,” Zofia said softly. “There’ll be another one next year, and the year after that. I’ll keep hosting these events as long as I’m around.” 

Zofia gently stroked the little girl’s head, and the girl buried her face in Zofia’s arms. 

One could tell she really trusted Zofia. That was why she clinged to her like glue. 

Zofia was still weak, so Aurelia urged her to go home and rest. Only then did she finally leave. 

As they were leaving, the little girl paused at the door and glanced back at Aurelia. 

Aurelia gave her a warm smile. 

The little girl froze for a second, then quickly turned away and hurried after Zofia. 

Aurelia had been stuck in bed for two days straight, and she was so sore that even her bones ached from all that lying around. 

She felt so restless that, once the chatty Miranda finally left the room, she slipped out of bed and went for a little walk. 

Her head was still spinning, and the whole world seemed to be tilting. She had to lean against the wall just to stay upright as she shuffled along. 

The hallway was silent. 

Rain was falling outside, occasionally tapping against the windows. 

Aurelia saw a small figure crouched in the corner. 

It was the little girl with autism. 

She steadied herself against the wall and made her way over, then crouched down next to the little girl, copying her posture. 

The little girl peeked at her out of the corner of her eye, but stayed silent. 

Aurelia just smiled gently, not saying a word, and kept her spot right there beside her. 

So there they were, one grown–up and one kid, quietly crouching together in the corner. 

After a while, Miranda came rushing over, looking all anxious. When she saw Aurelia crouching down on the floor, she finally breathed a sigh of relief. “Aurelia, what are you doing out here?” 

“Shh,” Aurelia whispered, motioning for her to be quiet. 

Miranda’s curiosity got the better of her. She lowered her voice and asked, “What are you two doing?” 

Then, copying them, she crouched down as well. 

The little girl bit her lip and whispered, “We’re going to turn into mushrooms soon.” 

Miranda just stood there, at a loss for words. 

Aurelia tilted her head and asked, “And what kind of mushroom are you going to be?” 

“A strong mushroom!” the little girl said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Aurelia tilted her head, “Then what about me?” 

The little girl blinked and said softly, “A beautiful mushroom.” 

Aurelia smiled, “And why are you a strong mushroom?” 

The little girl’s lips quivered. “Because that way, nobody would dare to pick on me.” 

Aurelia’s heart clenched with a pang of sorrow. 

She reached out and gently brushed the hem of the little girl’s dress. 

She worried the girl might shy away. 

The little girl shrank back a little, but she didn’t resist.

Aurelia let it go and asked with a gentle smile, “Can I be an even stronger mushroom? That way, I can protect you.” 

The little girl looked at her for a while, then nodded. “You can be the strongest and prettiest mushroom.” 

When Zofia came by, she found the little girl curled up and fast asleep in Aurelia’s bed. 

Zofia looked genuinely surprised and asked Aurelia how she’d managed to help the girl feel so comfortable. 

She admitted it had taken her nearly a year just to get the girl to trust her at all. 

After hearing Aurelia explain, Zofia couldn’t help but sigh, “You really have a way with her.” 

Then Zofia gave Aurelia a stern look. “Didn’t the doctor tell you to rest? Be good, okay?” 

Aurelia instantly went quiet, acting all obedient. 

Miranda joked, “Looks like only Zofia can get Aurelia to behave. She never listens to me, but the moment you say something, she’s all well–behaved. Guess you’ll have to drop by more often.” 

Aurelia was so speechless. 

After Zofia and the little girl left, Miranda couldn’t wait to spill the latest gossip to Aurelia. 

“Aurelia, I’ve got some juicy news!” Miranda blurted out 

actically bouncing with excitement. 

Aurelia wasn’t really interested. “What kind of big news could you possibly have?” 

“Trust me, this is huge!” Miranda gushed, practically bouncing with excitement. “Mr. Locke and Ms. Rowe went to some island for their engagement party, right? Guess what happened?” 

Aurelia shot her a look that could kill. 

Miranda coughed awkwardly and hurried to spill the beans. “On the night of the engagement party, Ms. Rowe got kidnapped!” 

Aurelia hadn’t been interested at first, but after hearing what Miranda said, she was curious. 

“Kidnapped?” Aurelia repeated, sounding genuinely surprised. 

‘What are the chances?‘ Aurelia thought, a little taken aback. 

“So then what?” Aurelia pressed, half–joking. “Did Cassian blow all his money to rescue her or something?”

According to the previous plot, it should be this way. 

Miranda shook her head. “No, but…” 

She paused, biting her lip, clearly conflicted about whether to go on. 

“But what?” Aurelia pressed. 

Miranda pouted. “Word is, Mr. Locke risked his own life to save her. He even got shot.” 

Aurelia wasn’t surprised. 

There was nothing wrong with this plot. 

It fit his whole lovesick act. 

Aurelia just scoffed and didn’t bother asking anything else.

She stayed in the hospital for another three days, and by the time she was discharged, she was finally back to her old self. 

On the day she was discharged, Darren came to pick her up. 

Aurelia finally got the chance to ask the question that had been weighing on her mind. “Did anyone get hurt trying to save me?” 

Darren nodded. “Yeah, someone did, but he’s almost fully recovered now. He’s been compensated, so you really don’t need to worry about it.” 

“I wish I could thank him face to face,” Aurelia said, meaning every word. 

After all, he’d put his life on the line for her. She owed him big favor. 

“Bit of a shame, he just went back hometown yesterday. Seriously, don’t stress about it. It’s literally his job,” Darren explained. 

Aurelia sighed, feeling a pang of disappointment. 

But since she’d be traveling to Grendel City pretty often from now on, she figured she’d get the chance to thank him face to face someday. So she let it go and didn’t ask any more questions. 

Darren personally saw Aurelia and her group off at the airport before leaving. 

By the time their plane touched down in Ashmont, it was already late at night. 

The airport was quiet at this hour. 

Aurelia and her group hurried out, moving quickly through the terminal. 

On the other side, a group of people came out of the VIP lane, moving just as quickly. 

“That looks like Mr. Locke,” Miranda murmured under her breath.
