Aurelia couldn’t help but to take a look.
Cassian and Tessa hurried out with their group.
Tessa was bundled up in a hat, sunglasses, and a mask, barely recognizable, her head down the whole way.
Cassian’s arm was in a sling, and it looked like he was pretty badly hurt.
Even so, he still used his uninjured arm to shield Tessa.
Maybe he noticed her staring, because Cassian looked over at her.
Their eyes met for just a split second as if nothing had ever happened between them.
Aurelia looked away, her face unreadable, and headed out through another exit with her group.

Early the next morning, Aurelia made her way to the port project, getting ready for the arrival of the safety inspection team.
What really caught her off guard was that Wade unexpectedly showed up as well.
Before Aurelia could even greet him, Wade jumped in first. “How did you get hurt? Is it bad? You look a little pale.”
He hesitated for a moment, then said, “And you’ve gotten a lot thinner.”
It had only been half a month since they’d last met, but Wade was quick to notice the changes in her.
“I got a bit injured in Grendel City,” Aurelia explained.
Wade immediately looked worried. “Is it serious? What did the doctor say?”
“It’s nothing serious. I’ve pretty much recovered now. Thanks for checking on me,” Aurelia replied.
Wade breathed a quiet sigh of relief. “Glad you’re okay.”
They barely had time to say a few words before the safety inspection team arrived.
Aurelia hurried over to greet them, but when she saw the person in charge, her brows furrowed instinctively.
It was Daniel.
But she quickly regained her composure and shook hands with Daniel and the rest of the team.
Daniel was polite, and he did notice the scrape on Aurelia’s face. “Ms. Corin, are you hurt?”
“It’s almost healed now. Thanks for asking, Mr. Rowe,” Aurelia replied politely.
She was just being courteous.
Since they were at work, Daniel didn’t press the issue and let it go after that one question.
On the surface, the safety inspection seemed to be going well, but there were some bumps along the way.
They didn’t find any major problems, but kept pointing out tiny flaws.
It was almost like they were trying to find fault with anything they could.

As the inspection dragged on, Aurelia’s expression grew more and more serious.
During lunch, she told the project team to do a more thorough self–review.
Miranda brought her a bowl of soothing herbal soup, but Aurelia just couldn’t bring herself to eat.
She spent her whole lunch break making at least ten calls, firing off instructions nonstop.
When Wade came over to see her, Aurelia was still glued to her phone.

Miranda swapped out the soup for a fresh, steaming bowl, gently urging her to eat something before diving back into work, or else her stomach would start hurting again.
Aurelia promised she would, but her phone never left her hand. She just kept working and never touched her food.
Miranda couldn’t help but sigh as she watched Aurelia.
Wade, who was rarely this blunt, interrupted, “Ms. Corin, work will always be there. Eating comes first.”
Only then did Aurelia finally put her work aside and actually focus on eating a few bites.
Wade had something he wanted to talk to her about, but he waited until she finished eating before bringing it up.
“Did you cross someone?” Wade asked, not beating around the bush.
Given his position, it wasn’t exactly the kind of thing he should be saying.
But seeing how anxious Aurelia was, he just went for it without overthinking.
Wade’s question made Aurelia pause for a moment.
Wade explained, “I’ve handled plenty of inspections like this, but I’ve never seen one this thorough. It makes me wonder if you’ve crossed someone, and that’s why they’re scrutinizing every detail.”
Business was cutthroat, and making enemies was just part of the game.
Without any proof, Aurelia couldn’t say for sure, but deep down, she had her suspicions.
Daniel showing up was definitely no coincidence.
She was already bracing herself for the worst.
“I messed up a bit. Something unexpected happened, so I had to stay in Grendel City a few more days and didn’t get everything sorted out in time,” Aurelia admitted.
“You’ve already done a great job,” Wade said.
He wasn’t just being polite. He genuinely thought Aurelia had handled everything well.
Then he tried to reassure her, “Don’t worry too much. If it’s just small issues, you’ll have a chance to sort them out.”
“Thanks,” Aurelia replied.
“You should get some rest. You really don’t look too well,” Wade reminded her as he was leaving.
After he left, Miranda leaned in and asked Aurelia, “Do you think Mr. Lautner has a crush on you? I swear, there’s a spark in his eyes whenever he looks at you.”
Aurelia kept flipping through her files. “He’s not Ultraman so why would his eves have to sparkle?”

“I get it now, Aurelia. You’re totally clueless when it comes to guys,” Miranda teased.

By afternoon, the sun was blazing, and everyone knew Ashmont’s sun was merciless.
Under the scorching heat, Aurelia felt a little powerless.
She still hadn’t fully recovered, was still dealing with a concussion, and pushing herself at work. Her body was at its limit.
After a wave of intense dizziness, she felt herself start to drift, weightless.
Her mind fuzzed out for a second.
When she came to, she realized she was cradled in Daniel’s arms.
Daniel was all worry. “Ms. Corin, are you alright?”
A crowd had already gathered around them.
“Good thing Mr. Rowe was quick on his feet and caught Ms. Corin just in time, or things could’ve ended really badly,”
someone said.
“Yeah, a fall from up there is no joke,” another person chimed in.
“As long as she’s alright, that’s what matters,” Daniel said, helping Aurelia sit up. He turned to his secretary. “Get the car. We need to get Ms. Corin to the hospital, now.”
Even after the doctor finished the examination, Aurelia’s dizziness still hadn’t gone away.
She forced herself to sit up and tried to thank Daniel.
Daniel stopped her before she could move. “Don’t get up if you’re not feeling well. Rest and focus on getting better.”
After thinking for a moment, he added, “And don’t worry about the safety inspection. It’s not a big deal.”
“Thanks, Mr. Rowe,” Aurelia said, feeling a wave of relief.
Daniel didn’t stick around for long.
Besides, it wouldn’t have looked right for him to linger.
He stood up, said goodbye to Aurelia, and made sure to remind her to take care of her health before leaving.
Miranda looked puzzled. “Mr. Rowe seems pretty nice. He really cares about you.”
“He’s Tessa’s dad,” Aurelia replied, matter–of–fact.
Miranda just stood there, at a loss for words.
She wished she could take back what she just said.
Daniel had just left Aurelia’s room when his phone buzzed. Alina was calling, wanting to know what he was doing.
“Working,” Daniel said.
“Seriously, all you ever think about is work. Tessa’s in this mess and you can’t even bother to visit her?” Alina griped.
Daniel sounded indifferent. “I’ll come see her when I’m finished.”

“At least give her a call, show her you care,” Alina pressed.
“Okay,” Daniel replied.
Alina hung up, glanced at Tessa, who was hidden under the covers, and let out a sigh.
“Your dad’s tied up with work, so he can’t come right now,” Alina said softly.
Tessa didn’t say a word, just lay there in silence.
The room was so quiet it was almost eerie.
After a while, Alina asked again, “When is Cassian coming over?”

“He’s been delayed for days, and there’s a lot of work waiting for him at the company. He has to work late tonight to catch up,” Tessa replied, her voice muffled from under the covers.
“Did he say anything else?” Alina asked, trying to sound casual.
“No,” Tessa replied.
After a while, Alina spoke up again.
This time, her voice was even softer, almost hesitant.
She asked, “So did he… do it to you or not?”
