Abigail came over with the first aid kit, her reading glasses perched on her nose as she got ready to treat Cassian’s arm. 

Only then did Aurelia remember that Cassian had injured his arm for saving Tessa. 

Back then, she’d only heard about it and didn’t know how bad it really was. 

She hadn’t expected the wound to still be there after all this time. 

Looks like it was pretty serious. 

He didn’t hesitate to put his own life on the line for Tessa. 

Abigail’s eyesight wasn’t the best, and she was worried about hurting Cassian. She thought about asking Aurelia to help, but given how things are between them lately, she ended up handling it herself. 

“If it hurts, just try to bear with it,” Abigail said gently, then muttered to herself, “How did you end up reopening the wound?” 

Aurelia didn’t pay much attention to what was going on over there. Before leaving, she called out, “Abigail, I’m heading out.” 

“Oh, don’t forget to take your snacks,” Abigail reminded her, having set aside some food for Aurelia. Seeing her about to leave, she started to get up to fetch them for her. 

“It’s fine. You just keep doing your thing. I’ll grab them myself. No need to walk me out,” Aurelia said. 

She stopped Abigail, went to the dining room herself, picked up the food from the table, and headed out. 

Abigail didn’t walk her out and just kept tending to Cassian’s wound. 

Maybe she hit a sore spot, because Cassian let out a low grunt of pain. 

That grunt made Aurelia freeze in her tracks just as she was about to leave. 

She turned back to look at Cassian. 

It was almost like fate was playing a trick on them. 

Cassian glanced up, his eyes finding her. 

Their gazes collided out of nowhere, catching both of them off guard. 

Confusion, hesitation, and a strange flutter she couldn’t put into words flickered in Aurelia’s eyes. 

Her heart felt wild and restless. 

Under her stare, Cassian’s gaze slowly grew distant and cool, before drifting away as if nothing had happened.

Aurelia felt as if a feather had lightly brushed against her heart. 

It had been so long since she’d looked at him this way. 

Soon, Aurelia walked out. 

The room went quiet again. 

Abigail sighed quietly, but kept silent. 

She thought, ‘Really, what could I say? It wouldn’t matter anyway, no matter what I said. 

By the time Abigail finished tending to his wound, half an hour had already passed. 

After stopping by the study to say goodbye to Benjamin, Cassian finally left the Locke family.

Outside, it had started to rain at some point, a fine, misty drizzle, like a haze that softened the day’s heat. 

But the air was still heavy and muggy, almost hard to breathe. 

Summers in Ashmont always seemed to drag on forever. 

Cassian was casually heading toward the parking lot, but froze when he realized who was standing beneath the streetlight. 

After leaving the Locke family, Aurelia hadn’t actually gone far. She’d stayed right outside. 

There was a fierce, urgent need for answers burning inside her. 

So she’d been waiting there for more than half an hour. 

The rain had only just begun. Her hair was slightly damp. 

She was still dressed in what she’d worn to the conference earlier: a sleek satin blouse and a pencil skirt, both sophisticated and stylish. 

She looked every bit the professional, confident, poised, and effortlessly elegant. 

The hair she’d pinned up with a jade hairpin earlier was now loose, softly cascading over her shoulders. 

Under the hazy glow of the streetlights, the scene lent her an added touch of mystery and subtle charm. 

Whatever Aurelia wore, she made it look incredible. 

She was a natural–born model. Every outfit looked like it was made just for her. 

Aurelia spoke first, her voice gentle, carrying the softness of the rain. “You’re hurt. Driving’s not a good idea right now. Let me give you a ride.” 

Cassian didn’t argue.

After they got in the car, Aurelia asked, “Where are you staying?” 

“Same hotel as before,” Cassian said. 

She didn’t press for details, nor did she seem to care why he was at a hotel. 

Only one question kept nagging at her. 

After about ten minutes on the road, they pulled up at a red light.

The light was set for sixty seconds. Aurelia watched the countdown tick by for almost ten before she finally spoke up, breaking the silence in the car. 

She asked, “Why hasn’t your arm healed yet?” 

“It was pretty bad, so it’s taking a while to heal, but it’s almost healed now,” Cassian replied. 

“Where were you on May 20th?” Aurelia asked, her voice quick and direct. 

Cassian replied instantly, like the words were burned into his memory. “I was getting engaged.” 

Aurelia’s grip on the steering wheel tightened. 

It made sense now. 

May 20th was the day of his engagement to Tessa. As the man of the hour, there was no way he could’ve just left the party. 

So, it was all just in her head. 

When the light turned green, the turmoil in Aurelia’s heart faded, leaving her calm once more. 

They drove the rest of the way in silence, neither saying another word. 

After dropping Cassian off at the hotel, Aurelia pulled away without hesitation, her car vanishing into the blur of rain. 

Cassian just watched in silence as her car vanished into the rain, a rare hint of loneliness showing on his always–cold expression. 

But he quickly masked his feelings and headed into the hotel. 

In one corner of the hotel lobby, Kyler hadn’t expected to see this. 

He never thought he’d run into a scene like this. 

After visiting Tessa at the hospital, he came back to the hotel feeling more restless than ever, so he headed downstairs to clear his head. 

But since it had started raining, he just found a window seat in the lobby café and got himself a coffee.

It was such a crazy coincidence, Kyler couldn’t have missed it even if he tried. 

Aurelia herself had actually dropped Cassian off at the hotel.

‘Didn’t Tessa say Cassian had to go home because his dad wasn’t feeling well, so he couldn’t stay with her at the hospital?‘ Kyler thought, a bitter laugh rising in his chest. 

‘So this is what he calls “going home“?‘ Kyler scoffed to himself. 

‘How ironic,‘ he thought. 

And Aurelia knew perfectly well that Cassian and Tessa were publicly engaged; everyone knew they were a couple, but she still insisted on getting between them. 

‘Isn’t she just the other woman here?‘ Kyler thought. ‘No boundaries at all. 

The thought that Wade was still into Aurelia just made it all the more unbearable for him. 

He ended up calling Wade and asking him to grab a drink with him. 

By the time Wade showed up, Kyler was already drinking. 

Kyler was in a lousy mood. Part of him thought Tessa deserved better, and part of him just straight–up despised how Aurelia kept crossing the line like she had no boundaries at all. 

When Wade showed up, Kyler poured him a drink himself, couldn’t help but blurt out the question that had been eating at him. “Why do you even like someone like Aurelia?” 

His voice dripped with disdain and contempt. 

Wade frowned, not hiding his irritation at Kyler’s sneering tone about Aurelia. ‘I really can’t stand the way he talks about her,‘ he thought. 

Still, out of courtesy, Wade answered calmly, “Because she’s worth it.” 

“What’s so special about her? Is it just her looks?” Kyler scoffed. “Yeah, she’s gorgeous, I’ll give you that, but inside? She’s ugly as hell! She’s not worth liking at all!” 

“If you say one more thing about her like that, I’m not drinking with you,” Wade said, his voice icy. 

Even Wade, usually so good–natured, had a cold look in his eyes now, his whole demeanor frosty. 

He looked like he could turn on Kyler in a heartbeat. 

Kyler couldn’t believe it. 

‘For a woman as manipulative as Aurelia, Wade’s really willing to toss aside all those years of friendship?‘ Kyler thought. 

‘Man, just how hard has he fallen for her?‘ Kyler wondered.

He took a few deep breaths, trying to settle his frustration, then tried to reason with Wade, his voice softer. “She’s not even into you, man. What’s the use of liking someone who doesn’t care about you?” 

Honestly, Aurelia was just leading Wade on, keeping him hooked with her little games. 

But Wade was totally clueless about it. 

But Wade just shook his head. “She’s been through some serious heartbreak. Her heart’s been scarred so deeply that right now, she just can’t open up to anyone new or start over with someone else.” 

Kyler sneered, “Come on, that’s just her way of stringing guys along!” 

“I’m done drinking with you tonight,” Wade said, his gaze icy as he stood up. “And you should watch how much you drink. It might keep you from running your mouth about people behind their backs.” 

Aurelia had just finished her shower, her mind finally quiet and free of all those tangled thoughts. She curled up with her laptop, ready to dive into some work. 

Just then, the doorbell rang.
