Tessa turned to Alina, “When’s Dad coming back to Ashmont?”

“Next week,” Alina answered.

“I remember Dad’s pretty tight with Mr. Montgomery from the city regulatory bureau. Maybe have him give Mr. Montgomery a heads–up,” Tessa suggested, her mind already working through the possibilities.

Alina nodded, clearly on the same page. “Relax, I’ve got it covered. You’ve got bigger things to worry about right now.”

“Everyone’s talking about whether Aurelia will break Cassian’s record for the fastest IPO. But if you get ahead of her now, trust me, everyone, including Benjamin, will have no choice but to see you in a whole new light,” Alina said, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

“If you really pull this off, you’ll leave her in the dust and flip the whole game. This will be the most epic comeback anyone’s ever seen,” she added, her voice brimming with confidence.

Over the weekend, Aurelia stayed by Ella’s side at the hospital for all her follow–up exams.

There were plenty of tests lined up, including a painless endoscopy.

Since you had to book this kind of test ahead of time, Aurelia had Miranda book it a month back.

But the nurse in the VIP ward told them that even without an appointment, they could still get the painless procedure.

After all, this was a special ward. Every test could be fast–tracked through their exclusive channel.

It was so convenient that Aurelia actually started thinking about opening a VIP ward herself one day.

After all, Ella had always been in poor health. She could really use something like this.

Once the endoscopy was done, Aurelia was pushing Ella back to their room, but a crowd was blocking the hallway, making it impossible to get through.

The nurse went to check things out and came back to Aurelia. “Some patients are making a fuss. Apparently, someone tried to cut the line. The staff are already on it, so we just need to hang tight for a couple of minutes.”

All the tests were finished anyway, so Aurelia didn’t really care about waiting a few minutes.

The hospital was pretty quick about handling things. Within two minutes, the crowd had already been cleared out.

In the crowd, Aurelia spotted Tessa and Alina, with anger written all over their faces.

They looked nothing like their usual polished selves. Their hair was a mess, and their high–end clothes were torn and all over the place.

Alina was arguing with the hospital manager, insisting that the other party had started the fight.

The person who started it shot back, “You guys are the ones who cut the line, okay? We’ve been waiting here since early morning, and the moment you show up, you say your son–in–law owns the hospital and demand to jump ahead. Who do you think you are?”

The people around them started chiming in, all pointing fingers at Alina for cutting the line.

The hospital manager was clearly at their wits‘ end. After finally calming everyone down, they tried to explain to Alina, “We have to follow the queue here. Cutting in line is bound to cause trouble.”

Alina was still arguing with the hospital manager when Tessa caught sight of Aurelia in the crowd.

Her expression turned icy in an instant, and remembering the mess she was in, her face went rigid.

Tessa took Alina by the arm and hurried off, not wanting Aurelia to catch her looking like this. “Mom, let’s just go back,” she said.

Alina noticed Aurelia too, her expression soured with annoyance.

But she dropped the argument and followed Tessa back to their room without another word.

As soon as they got back, Vanessa showed up.

She froze when she saw the state Tessa and Alina were in. “What happened? Why are you two in such a mess?”

“Just ran into some rude people,” Alina brushed it off, not wanting to get into details.

Vanessa could tell Alina wasn’t in the mood, so she didn’t press any further.

After taking a quick look around the room, Vanessa frowned. “Why are you in a regular room? Didn’t Cassian get you a VIP suite?”

Her words instantly struck a nerve with both Tessa and Alina.

Both of them looked visibly upset.

The nurse knocked on the door and asked if the endoscopy was done yet.

Tessa replied that it hadn’t been done.

The nurse urged, “Hurry up and get it done. The doctor needs the test slip.”

Alina asked, “Can you schedule me for the painless procedure?”

She was really anxious about endoscopies.

The nurse looked awkward. “You need to book the painless procedure ahead of time. Since you didn’t make an appointment, you’ll have to go with the regular one.”

Vanessa turned to Tessa. “You didn’t make an appointment?”

Tessa’s face froze for a second, then she shook her head. “No.”

She never even thought about stuff like this.

Back then, whenever Alina or I had to be hospitalized, Cassian always took care of everything for us.

And since they always got the VIP treatment, they never had to worry about appointments at all.

Vanessa frowned. “If it’s not the painless kind, that’s going to be rough. Why not just call your son–in–law and have him pull some strings? He’s got money in this hospital. One word from him and it’s done,”

Alina chimed in, “Yeah, could you call Cassian and see if he can help? I really don’t want to do the standard procedure.”

With no other option, Tessa reluctantly picked up her phone and called Cassian.

But he didn’t answer.

“He’s probably just busy,” Tessa told them.

Neither of them questioned it. Everyone knew Cassian would never ignore Tessa’s call.

Unless he was caught up and hadn’t checked his phone.

Tessa thought the same.

“So what now? Should we just wait until Cassian’s free?” Vanessa asked, sounding a bit unsure.

“Forget it, let’s just get it over with. We can’t keep bothering Cassian with every little thing,” Alina said, deciding to tough it out for the bigger picture.

“They’re not even married yet, and Tessa’s already having a hard time. If we keep bugging Cassian over stuff like this, it’ll just make a bad impression,” she added.

Besides, Benjamin was still staying at this hospital.

If word got back to him, Tessa would have even less chance of getting close to him.

Tessa weighed her options and decided not to call Cassian again. She quickly changed into fresh clothes and took Alina back to get the endoscopy done.

The line was ridiculously long, and they ended up waiting ages.

By the time they finally got out, Aurelia was already there picking up Ella’s test results.

Alina was hunched over the trash can, retching uncontrollably, her face so pale she looked like she might pass out any second.

Tessa was gently patting her back, trying to soothe her, while Vanessa quickly handed over tissues, her eyes full of worry.

Mia came over to meet Aurelia for lunch. Spotting her, she waved and called out, “Hey, Aurelia! Over here!”

Her voice caught Tessa and Vanessa’s attention.

Vanessa had met Aurelia before, and after hearing Alina complain about the whole VIP ward situation, she was really ticked

off at her.

Seeing Tessa looking so wrecked, Vanessa felt the urge to stick up for her.

So she deliberately raised her voice, throwing shade at Aurelia. “Talk about shameless! She got kicked to the curb, but she’s still desperately trying to cozy up to Benjamin, always hanging around the Lockes like she’s got something to prove. Could she be any more obvious?”
