Aurelia was so familiar with him that she didn’t even need to turn around to know who it was. 

Yet he felt so distant now, almost like a stranger she was on the verge of forgetting. 

Behind the screen, the two kept talking, and the secrets they were spilling just kept piling up. 

Preston was practically gloating. “So, teaming up with me was the smartest move you could’ve made!” Preston said, his voice full of pride. 

“Of course, Mr. Preston. I hope you’ll keep looking out for me,” the other guy replied quickly. 

“I’ll definitely look out for you, but maybe we should talk about adjusting our split,” Preston suggested. 

The other man sounded anxious. “But the kickback I’m giving you is already the max. If I go any higher, I won’t make anything.” 

Preston just shrugged. “You know I’ve got plenty of options, but for you? I’m the only game in town.” 

After a moment of silence, the other guy finally caved, though he was clearly reluctant. “Alright! Fifty–fifty, Mr. Pelosi. That’s my absolute limit.” 

Preston grinned, satisfied. “Deal.” 

They wrapped things up and left together. 

Once Aurelia was sure those two were out of earshot, she pulled Cassian’s hand away and stepped back decisively, putting clear distance between them. 

She withdrew so abruptly that Cassian was momentarily taken aback. 

His prominent brow cast just enough shadow to hide his eyes, making his emotions impossible to read. 

Aurelia, meanwhile, stood in the interplay of light and shadow, her cold indifference laid bare in her eyes. 

Her tone was icy as Aurelia asked Cassian, “You’re really just going to ignore all this obvious shady stuff?” 

Even some outsider could see what was going on. There was no way Cassian didn’t notice. 

Or maybe he’d known the whole time and just chose to look the other way. 

Aurelia just didn’t get it. 

He used to be so obsessive about every little thing, but now he would put up with anything. 

For Tessa, Cassian would toss his principles aside without a second thought. 

Cassian looked totally unbothered, clearly thinking this was no big deal. 

“They’re family, after all. Gotta cut them some slack,” he said casually.

She masked her indifference, turned around, and walked away. 

Cassian stood there, not moving an inch. 

Her silhouette was the only thing reflected in his eyes. Nothing else mattered. 

After the dinner was over, Aurelia and Cassian saw the execs off together. 

Once they heard about Aurelia’s background, everyone couldn’t stop singing her praises and were all itching to team up with 

her. 

Toby was especially generous with his compliments. “I’ve heard so much about you, Ms. Corin, but never had the chance to You’re way prettier and way more capable than the rumors said. You’re the kind of person who’s born to do great things. Success is basically guaranteed for you!”

He was about to say more, but Cassian cut him off, letting him know his driver had arrived. 

Toby had no choice but to drop it, waved goodbye to them, and headed out. 

Aurelia’s smile faded quickly. She was just about to say a polite goodbye to Cassian and leave. 

But Cassian spoke up first. “Can I drive you home?” 

“No, thanks. I’ve got my own car,” Aurelia replied. 

She hadn’t forgotten what Cassian said at dinner. 

He was planning to pick up Tessa, which was why he swapped out his wine for water. 

And honestly, Cassian wasn’t really offering to drive her home; he was just making small talk, being polite for appearance’s sake. If she actually took him up on it, she’d just end up looking naive. 

As expected, Cassian didn’t push it. He just pulled out his phone and glanced at WhatsApp. 

As Aurelia turned to leave, she heard his phone play a voice message out loud. 

It was probably Tessa sending a voice message, Cassian just tapped play, letting Tessa’s voice fill the air. 

“Cassian, when are you done?” Tessa’s voice came through, sweet and a little impatient. 

Cassian replied with a voice message, his tone instantly softening. “It’s over. I’m on my way to you.” 

He was acting like they were joined at the hip. 

Right after the two of them left, Preston finally stepped out. 

He instantly messaged Tessa: [Tessa, I just saw Mr. Locke with Aurelia. You think there’s something going on between those two?]

Preston had met Aurelia before at Ascend Group, and his mom, Vanessa, had told him that Aurelia and Cassian used to be a thing. 

Seeing them together made him worry their old flame might be rekindling, so he messaged Tessa, just wanted to give her a heads–up, in case something was up. 

Tessa shot back almost right away: [You’re reading too much into it. It’s just a normal business dinner. Cassian already mentioned it to me.] 

Preston breathed a sigh of relief. [Alright, as long as you’re in the loop.] 

Tessa thought of something else and added, “By the way, HelixTech is prepping for its IPO. Help me keep an eye on things at Ascend Group, okay?” 

Preston replied enthusiastically, “Anything for you! I’ve got you covered!” 

When Cassian showed up, Tessa was still working late at HelixTech. 

“Hang on, I just need to finish up these last few files,” Tessa said, barely looking up from her computer as Cassian came in. 

“Go ahead,” Cassian said, picking up a book from her desk and casually flipping through it. 

“So, you’re really thinking about going for a master’s?” Cassian asked. 

Tessa replied with total confidence, “Absolutely. Stephen is a major player in finance. If I can get in with him, it’ll open so many doors for me down the line.” 

She wasn’t chasing some fancy degree. What she really wanted was the powerful network behind Stephen. 

“You’re really putting in the work, huh?” Cassian teased. 

Tessa arched her brows, shooting him a confident look. “Because I want to be the one who can fight by your side.” 

She was not like Aurelia, who just quietly worked away as your secretary for seven years, never asking for more. 

She looked up at him and asked, “What, you don’t support me?” 

“Of course I do. Whatever you want, I’ve got your back,” Cassian replied. 

Cassian was never one to break a promise. The next day, he showed up with Tessa and personally took her to see Stephen. 

Tessa walked in brimming with confidence, but to her surprise, Aurelia and Gideon were already there. 

The two of them were chatting away. 

Gideon turned to Aurelia, totally focused on their conversation. Even when Cassian and Tessa arrived, he just nodded at them and went right back to talking to Aurelia. 

Aurelia didn’t even bother to say hi. 

She didn’t see the point. 

Tessa deliberately ignored Aurelia, but still tossed a greeting to Gideon. “Gideon, it’s been a while.” 

“Yeah,” Gideon replied, his voice cool and distant. 

Stephen glanced around, a bit amused. “Well, this is odd. Why is everyone suddenly showing up at my office today?” 

“Here’s the thing,” Tessa said, sounding super earnest. “I didn’t get a chance to really talk with you at the dinner, so I made a

Stephen replied, unhurried as always, “Everyone’s got the same chance, Ms. Rowe. Just head to the official website and sign up.” 

Tessa clearly didn’t want to go through the whole process, so she shot Cassian a hopeful look. 

Cassian picked up right where she left off. ‘She’s been swamped with work and hasn’t had a chance to get everything ready. We were hoping you could give her a shot, Dr. Horton.” 

That sounded good on the surface. 

But what Cassian really wanted was to get Tessa a guaranteed spot, no matter what. 

This time, Aurelia couldn’t just stay on the sidelines anymore.
