Chapter 269 

Aurelia was seriously fed up. Everyone would feel annoyed being cornered like this repeatedly. The thing was, she had already shifted to a new place, and Cassian still knew her new address. 

‘But again, if he really wants to find out, it won’t be hard for him, Aurelia thought. She just never imagined he would go to such lengths for Tessa. 

Still, Aurelia got out of the car. The chilly air outside sobered her up a little. Cassian walked over, stopping about three feet away. He frowned and asked, “Why are you drinking? Was it for work?” 

Anyone who overheard him might think he was actually concerned about her. Aurelia didn’t have time for his theatrics. She went straight to the point. 

“I do owe you a favor for the car accident previously, but that’s a different thing. When it comes to Vanessa, I’m not backing down. I’ll make sure she faces the consequences, no matter what,” Aurelia said. 

Perhaps the universe was echoing what she just said. Just as she finished speaking, a breeze swept past, lifting the long strands of hair that had fallen over her shoulders. 

Cassian’s gaze shifted instantly, locking onto the hair fluttering in the wind, and for a moment, he actually forgot to answer her question. 

Aurelia grew impatient, running a frustrated hand through her stubborn hair. She raised her voice when she said, “Did you hear me?” 

Cassian finally shifted his gaze, lowered his lashes slightly, and said in a careless tone, “So there’s really no room for negotiation at all?” 

“Yes, not at all,” Aurelia shot back. 

Seeing how firm she was, Cassian didn’t bother to convince her. He just replied coolly, “Alright.” 

With nothing else to say, Aurelia didn’t linger for a moment. She spun on her heel and strode off, her resolve clear in every step. She didn’t even bother saying goodbye. 

Cassian stood where he was, watching her figure disappear in the distance until she was completely gone. Only then did he slowly shift his gaze away, his dark brown eyes growing even deeper and more unfathomable, like a bottomless lake. 

Cassian got back in his car, but instead of driving away, he just sat there, smoking in silence. The ember at the tip of his cigarette flickered in the wind, caught between his slender fingers. 

On the day of HelixTech’s roadshow in Northvale, Tessa called personally to invite Kyler over. But Kyler told her he wasn’t in Northvale; he was out of town for work. 

Tessa felt a bit lost. But she didn’t dwell on it. She just figured Kyley couldn’t make it due to his work. After all, she knew well how much she meant to him. 

Kyler had been pretty down lately, and he hardly bothered to show up at the office. Not that it mattered, as whenever he went in, the shareholders would give him an earful. Even Elias was worried sick about him. 

“So, have you considered what I mentioned to you?” Elias wasn’t ready to let it go, still trying to talk Kyler into it. 

Kyler, messing around with some Legos, looking totally distracted. “She might not even want me,” he said. 

Elias was puzzled and asked him why, but Kyler just kept his mouth shut. When Elias pressed him, Kyler finally muttered

that he and Aurelia had a grudge in the past. 

Elias lost his cool and said, “Can’t you just apologize to her? I’ll talk to Professor Horton and have him set it up for you. You can apologize to her face–to–face, and make sure you really mean it.” 

“No. I’m not going,” Kyler replied flatly. 

“So you do know it’s embarrassing, huh?” Elias said sarcastically. 

Elias wanted to say further, but Kyler switched topics. “When you met Professor Horton, did you ask about Tessa?” 

“He said her identity will be revealed in a little while. Just hang in there,” Elias replied. 

‘A little while… Kyler mused. ‘Is it after the announcement of the master’s program application results?‘ 

“Why must he wait a while longer?” Kyler asked, genuinely puzzled. 

“Professor Horton is just… eccentric. That’s how geniuses are. If he doesn’t want to reveal, he’s got his reasons. No one can force him,” Elias explained. 

Elias had known Stephen for a long time, so he knew his character well. He really was an odd old guy; he was proud and always did whatever he wished. ‘He totally fits the stereotype people have about geniuses,‘ Elias thought. 

After Tyson finished the last roadshow, he had a conference call with Aurelia to report on the progress. Next was waiting for the final review from the Securities and Exchange Commission. With how things progressed, there shouldn’t be any issues. 

“Thanks for all your hard work. Miranda’s already sent out the notice. Everyone gets a week off for a company retreat, all expenses paid,” Aurelia said. 

Tyson asked, “What about you? Are you coming along to take a break?” 

“I’m busy preparing for the master’s program application. I can’t go anywhere,” Aurelia replied. 

“Then I’ll stay back too…” Tyson said. 

“No way, you must go!” Aurelia cut him off before he could finish. “One of us needs to be there, or the whole crew’s gonna be lost. Tyson had no choice but to agree. 

Aurelia had just hung up when Mia called in. She answered the call while writing her thesis, juggling both without missing a 

beat, 

“Babe, guess who I ran into today?” Mia said excitedly. 

Mia could never keep a secret. Even if Aurelia didn’t ask, she would start gushing the whole story before Aurelia could even get a word in. 

“I ran into Cassian the jerk and Tessa,” Mia blurted out. 

“The two are so over the top! It’s like showing off in Ashmont isn’t enough, and they have to come to Northvale to flaunt 

their affection. 

“You have no idea how cringey they were at that dinner party. And people were actually curious about their relationship drama. I was sitting there thinking, who would want to know all the details about their cheating scandals? 

“And Tessa kept going on about ‘my Cassian‘ like they were already married. Believe it or not, someone actually asked them, ‘You two seem so close, but why aren’t you married yet?‘ 

“Guess what Cassian the jerk said?” Mia gossiped, bursting with excitement.

Aurelia kept typing without missing a beat. “So, what did he say?” she chimed in.

“Cassian said Tessa is focused on her career right now, and she wants to make it big before even thinking about getting married. He went on about how he would fully support her, like he’s the most devoted boyfriend ever!” Mia rattled off. 

Mia kept rambling on, but all she heard from Aurelia was the steady clatter of typing. “Babe, are you listening?” Mia asked. 

Aurelia finally paused and asked, “By the way, how did you end up at a business dinner party?” 

Mia was speechless. ‘Is that really the point right now?‘ Mia thought, exasperated. 

Why are you focusing on that? That’s not what I expected at all!‘ Mia grumbled to herself. 

“I accompanied an investor to the party,” Mia said vaguely. 

Aurelia frowned and said, “Didn’t I tell your manager you don’t have to attend those networking things?” 

“It was an investor, sort of a distant relative,” Mia replied. 

“You actually have rich relatives?” Aurelia shot back. 

“Well, you know, the kind who suddenly got rich when their house got torn down for redevelopment. Now they’ve got some small quick cash,” Mia said, sounding a bit sheepish. 

Hearing Aurelia typing away again, Mia finally secretly heaved a sigh of relief. ‘Phew, crisis averted, Mia thought to herself. 

The call didn’t affect Aurelia at all. As soon as it ended, she went straight back to working on her thesis as if nothing had happened. 

Her lawyer called first thing in the morning with an update. The injured driver of the white car had switched sides, taking all the blame and swearing it was all his doing. Zhao Lanxin had nothing to do with it. 

It looked like Zhao Lanxin might actually get off scot–free. Just a few words, and Aurelia’s expression turned ice–cold. 

‘No wonder Cassian didn’t show up again. He must’ve found a new angle to work with,‘ Aurelia thought, her jaw clenched.
