If this had happened before, Tessa would’ve gone straight to Cassian for help, even if Vanessa didn’t say a word. 

But right now, at such a critical moment, there was absolutely no way she could ask him for anything. 

“What are we supposed to do? Are we really just going to let your cousin end up in jail?” Vanessa started crying again. 

Alina gritted her teeth. “Let’s try to raise the money first. If that doesn’t work, we’ll have to turn to private lenders.” 

“Mom, 100 million dollars is no small amount. Who would be willing to lend us that much?” Tessa’s head was pounding. “And private lenders charge sky–high interest rates!” 

“As long as Cassian hasn’t called off the engagement, you’re still in charge of Ascend Group and HelixTech. You still have a shot at making a comeback,” Alina reminded her.

Aurelia had been feeling pretty troubled these past couple of days. 

When Miranda brought in her coffee, she said, “That young Mr. Ackerley is here again.” 

“Not seeing him,” Aurelia said, her eyes flashing with impatience. 

“I told him, but he’s determined to wait,” Miranda replied. 

Aurelia said indifferently, “Whatever, let him do what he wants.” 

That day, Kyler came back empty–handed once again. When Elias saw Kyler walk in all downcast, he knew right away what had happened. 

“Ms. Corin still won’t see you?” Elias asked. 

“Yeah,” Kyler replied, his whole body slumped in defeat. 

Elias grumbled, “Serves you right! Can’t even see what’s right in front of you!” 

Kyler couldn’t even defend himself. He knew this was all on him. He couldn’t blame anyone else. 

Honestly, it made sense Aurelia was ignoring him now. 

Elias was just as annoyed by Kyler and stormed off to his room, slamming the door behind him. 

Then, Kyler went downstairs for a smoke, standing alone on the curb, watching the ember at his fingertips flicker in and out of the shadows. 

In the dim light, his face was shadowed, eyes unreadable.

He’d lost track of how many cigarettes he’d gone through. When he shook the pack, it was finally empty. 

However, it did nothing to ease the knot in his chest. 

Just as he was about to go buy more cigarettes, his phone rang. He glanced at his phone in surprise. It was Tessa calling. 

He wasn’t planning to answer, but then an idea hit him, so he picked up. 

“You finally answered,” Tessa said, letting out a sigh of relief. “Kyler, are you still in Ashmont?” 

“Yeah,” Kyler replied. 

“Can we meet up?” Tessa asked. 

“Sure,” Kyler replied. 

After hanging up, Tessa let out a sigh of relief. ‘At least Kyler’s still willing to talk to me. 

Karlie said, “Kyler is totally hung up on you!” 

Tessa couldn’t help but agree. 

These past couple of days, she’d tasted the ups and downs of people’s attitudes toward her, but Kyler hadn’t changed at all. He still treated her just like before. 

So, the next day, Tessa dressed up carefully, and on her way there, she stopped by a flower shop to buy a bouquet of lilies of the valley. 

Normally, whenever they met up, Kyler would always get there early and wait for her. 

But today, she ended up waiting for him for quite a while. 

Still, at least he did show up in the end. 

Tessa flashed her signature smile and started talking to him in that soft, familiar voice, just like she always did. 

Kyler actually admired her a little. After all that drama, she could still hold herself together like nothing had happened. 

“Every time I walk past a flower shop and see lilies of the valley, I always think about our days back at business school,” Tessa said, hinting at their shared past. 

If this had been before, he would’ve been really touched. But now, he just thought it was ironic. 

“Did I ever tell you why I turned you down back then?” Tessa kept steering the conversation that way. 

“No,” Kyler replied. 

“Honestly, I guess it just wasn’t meant to be. Things with Gideon were pretty meh, but he never actually broke up with me. I’m loyal like that, so I just kept waiting for him.

“And you were all about your studies back then, so I figured it was best to turn you down,” Tessa said. Kyler just listened quietly, not saying a word. 

As Tessa kept playing along, she started to feel a little awkward and took a sip of her drink to cover it up. 

“So, do you want something?” Kyler asked, clearly not wanting to hang around. 

“Yeah, actually, I do,” Tessa hesitated, but finally spoke up. 

She didn’t have a choice. Things were way too messy right now, and pride was the last thing on her mind. 

She told him about needing to borrow money. 

Tessa thought she just couldn’t risk messing with loan sharks, the stakes were way too high. 

Karlie had nudged her, saying, “Dont You funk 

A hundred million is pocket change for him.” 

That was why Tessa reached out to Kyler.

Kyler blinked in surprise. “Wait, Cassian doesn’t have money for this?” 

“It’s my family’s problem. I don’t want to drag him into it,” Tessa said, choosing her words carefully. 

Kyler just gave a half–smile. “Sorry, wish I could help, but I can’t.” 

In that moment, Tessa’s flawless facade finally showed a crack. This was the first time Kyler had ever turned her down. 

“I know it’s a lot…” Tessa tried to explain herself. 

However, Kyler cut her off. “100 million dollars isn’t even a big deal for me. I just don’t want to help you.” 

She saw it then; his face was completely cold, like he didn’t care at all. 

Tessa suddenly got it, and a look of humiliation flashed across her face. She didn’t bother waiting for the food, just stood up and walked out. 

After she left, Kyler got up too, ready to head out. 

The waiter called out to him, “Sir, your flowers.” 

Kyler glanced back at the bouquet of lilies of the valley on the table, a chill settling in his eyes. 

‘Pure and flawless? Please, Kyler sneered to himself. ‘Is she even worthy?‘ 

“Throw them away!” he snapped. 

His dad was right to call him out. He really couldn’t see what was right in front of him.

Honestly, Aurelia couldn’t care less about Kyler or any of that drama. 

“Eat your soup before it’s cold,” Miranda said, setting the bowl in front of her and making sure she finished it. “Heard you coughing yesterday, so I made you some pear and fritillary herbal soup, supposed to help soothe your throat and kick that cough.” 

“Impressive, you actually know how to make this?” Aurelia said, giving her a nod of approval. 

Miranda looked even more pleased with herself. 

Aurelia had just taken a sip of her soup when her phone rang. The caller informed her that the collectible she’d been eyeing was auctioned off to someone else for a high price. 

“Would you mind telling me who the buyer is?” Aurelia asked. 

She had carefully selected that collectible, planning to present it to Stephen as his apprenticeship gift at the 

party. 

“It was a gentleman named Cassian Locke,” the caller replied. 

Her gaze turned icy. ‘Why is it Cassian again? Does he really need so many collectibles anyway?‘ 

Only four days left till the event, and the perfect gift she’d picked out got snatched by someone else. That was seriously infuriating. 

Not wasting any time, Aurelia called Cassian directly. 

The phone barely rang before the man picked up.
