Chapter 318Â
“Darren saved you?” Miranda looked genuinely surprised. “That’s a huge favor.”Â
She ladled some oats into a bowl and handed it to Aurelia. “Hold on, you only got kidnapped because of him. He was just cleaning up his own mess. You don’t owe him anything.”Â
“It’s not that simple,” Aurelia said, not really thinking much about it.Â
“It’s my fault. I should’ve stuck with you,” Miranda started beating herself up.Â
“Stuff like this is impossible to guard against. How could you blame yourself?” Aurelia replied.Â
No one could’ve predicted that Juliana would pull a stunt like that.Â
The thing was, Aurelia had barely even met Juliana before.Â
No one knew what would happen first, tomorrow or some crazy accident.Â
Seeing Miranda still sulking, Aurelia tried to lift her spirits. “We came here to kick back and have fun. If not now, when?”Â
Miranda felt a bit better, but she was still mulling it over in her head. ‘Guess we need a female bodyguard. Sometimes having a male bodyguard around is inconvenient,‘ she thought.Â
Since it was a cruise trip, Aurelia was definitely going to want to go for a swim or something.Â
Having Walter, a male bodyguard, tagging along all the time wasn’t appropriate, and that was how the accident happened.Â
Seeing she couldn’t change Miranda’s mind, Aurelia just let her be.Â
“But I heard that psycho got seriously injured, and had four broken ribs,” Miranda said, though it was just gossip she’d picked up, not something she saw herself.Â
Aurelia frowned. “How did she get hurt?”Â
Juliana was totally fine before Aurelia got tossed into the sea.Â
Miranda shook her head. “No clue. Word is, someone kicked her hard.”Â
“Darren?” Aurelia blinked, surprised. “He doesn’t seem like the type.”Â
“Yeah, I feel the same. Mr. Keith always comes off as so polished and soft–spoken. And that crazy woman is his sister–in–law. Would he really go that hard on her?”Â
Aurelia and Miranda were just speculating based on their own gut feelings. They didn’t know for sure what actually happened.Â
Aurelia took two more days to rest.Â
During that time, Joey would come by at the same time every day and spend a few hours with her.Â
Joey didn’t say much and just kept her company in silence.Â
After the incident, Joey became even quieter than before.Â
Aurelia couldn’t help but worry about her.Â
While she was online catching up on emails, she also kept an eye on the latest industry buzz.Â
Chapter 318Â
The biggest news was HelixTech’s failed backdoor listing.Â
Honestly, the more arrogant Tessa was before, the more miserable she was now.Â
During the roadshow, she hyped up HelixTech like it was the next big thing.Â
She even talked a big game at the finance summit, flaunting Honoria Capital’s endorsement like she owned the place.Â
It was just like what people said. Arrogance led to downfall.Â
Word from industry insiders was that Tessa had been lying low ever since she got back to Ashmont, dodging both the media and investors.Â
Debt collectors were practically lining up all the way to Bustead.Â
Two investors, duped by her hype, took out loans to invest and got buried under a mountain of debt.Â
One of them totally cracked under the pressure and jumped off a building.Â
The very next day, someone staked out Alina’s place.Â
They confronted her, asking, “Why did your daughter trick people into investing, wreck their families, and then just hide away instead of addressing the problem?”Â
Alina just said, “Investing is a risky business. If he couldn’t take the heat, how’s that my daughter’s fault? He’s dead, but now my daughter’s getting all this hate. How is that fair?”Â
Aurelia couldn’t believe her eyes when she read that response.Â
‘How could anyone be so heartless and self–absorbed?‘ she thought.Â
And the tragedy didn’t stop there. Just one day after Alina’s reply, the investor’s wife also took her own life by jumping off a building.Â
This time, the reporters camped out at Karlie’s place.Â
And Karlie dropped an even more shocking line.Â
‘Once someone’s dead, their debts are wiped clean. Honestly, they’re better off than those left behind,” Karlie said.Â
Seriously, the whole family had the same cold–blooded vibe.Â
Of course, that kind of response set off a firestorm online.Â
The other investors were banding together to sue, accusing Tessa of pulling off a financial scam and demanding the higher- ups step in to investigate HelixTech.Â
Mia texted Aurelia: [Is that bastard Cassian finally going bankrupt?]Â
If Cassian kept using Honoria Capital to plug the hole, he’d be wiped out for sure.Â
Mia wondered, ’51 times leverage? How the hell did Tessa even dare?‘Â
But so far, Cassian hadn’t said a word.Â
No one knew if he’d step in. Even Aurelia herself had no idea.Â
Meanwhile, over in Ashmont, Tessa had been hiding out at home for five days straight, too scared to set foot outside evenÂ
once.Â

The curtains stayed tightly shut, and she didn’t even dare to switch on the lights.Â
Her world was just like that room, shrouded in endless darkness.Â
Alina cooked some fish soup and brought it over to Tessa’s room.Â
Tessa had no appetite at all.Â
Alina tried everything to get Tessa to eat, but nothing worked.Â
“Is there still no word from Cassian?” Alina set the soup down and asked Tessa.Â
She asked that question almost every single day, but the answer never changed.Â
“What could he possibly be so busy with?” Alina asked, clearly confused. “Things are falling apart here in Ashmont, and he, keeps running off overseas.”Â
“He says he’s trying to raise money,” Tessa replied, her voice dry and hoarse. “The hole’s just too big.”Â
Hearing that, Alina’s face eased up a bit. “He’s really making things harder for himself. The Locke Group is right here in Ashmont, but he keeps running off overseas to scrape together cash.”Â
“Cassian and the Locke Group are totally separate. There are no business ties, so there’s no reason for him to dip into the company’s money,” Tessa said.Â
“At a time like this, does it even matter? Isn’t the Locke Group basically his? What difference does it make to take the money from there?” Alina asked.Â
Honestly, Alina just couldn’t wrap her head around it.Â
“When he started his own business, he signed an agreement with Benjamin,” Tessa explained.Â
Alina narrowed her eyes. “So what? He’s Benjamin’s only son. Who else would get the Locke Group’s money if not him?”Â
Tessa’s mind was a mess. She wasn’t even thinking about any of that.Â
Alina knew how much pressure Tessa was under, so she stopped pushing and just told Tessa to try and eat something.Â
She reassured Tessa, “Don’t worry. We’re not out of options yet. There’s still a’way out.”Â
“What exactly are you planning?” Tessa asked.Â
“Just wait and see,” Alina said, refusing to spill any details.Â
After stepping out of Tessa’s room, Alina picked up her phone and called Vanessa, asking her to take care of something forÂ
her.Â
Early the next morning, Benjamin’s driver took him to the hospital for a follow–up.Â
They were just about to reach the hospital when a black sedan suddenly spun out of control, heading straight for Benjamin’sÂ
car,Â
The driver barely had time to react. He swerved hard toward the roadside embankment, trying to avoid the crash.Â
But it was too late. The collision left a massive dent in the side of their car.Â
The driver was injured and crawled out of the wreck, barely able to stand.Â
Bystanders and other drivers rushed over to help the injured driver.Â

The driver waved them off. “Don’t worry, there’s no one else in the car. I’m okay.”Â

Compared to Benjamin’s car, the other car was wrecked more seriously. Even the driver had to be carried out of the wreck.Â
When Vanessa realized the car was empty, she dialed Alina in a fluster, telling Alina that their plan had failed. Benjamin and his caregiver weren’t in the car. Only the driver got mildly hurt.Â
“Talk about luck. He just won’t die.” Alina gritted her teeth, seething with anger.Â
She’d originally planned for Benjamin to have a fatal accident so that Cassian could openly and legitimately inherit the Locke Group.Â
That way, all the trouble Tessa was facing would be solved in no time.Â
And with Benjamin out of the picture, there’d be nothing stopping Cassian from marrying Tessa.Â
The real source of all their problems was Benjamin. If Benjamin were out of the picture, all their problems would be solved.Â
