For a moment. Tessa froze in place. 

She even forgot to cry, just staring at Daniel in a daze, as if searching his face for any sign. 

But Daniel’s face showed nothing but indifference. 

Only coldness remained. 

His eyes held not a shred of warmth as he looked at her. 

Tessa’s expression shifted from frozen shock to growing astonishment, then to utter disbelief. 

Finally, she blurted out to Daniel, “Dad, tell me you’re lying, aren’t you? 

Tessa didn’t even give Daniel a chance to speak. She started rambling, asking and answering her own questions in a desperate rush. 

“You have to be lying to me. 

“You’re only saying this to protect yourself, aren’t you? 

“I get it. Once you get yourself out of this mess and get back on your feet, you’ll figure out a way to save Mom and me. I know you will, I totally understand.” 

Tessa kept making excuses for Daniel, even though he hadn’t said a single word. 

But no matter how many excuses Tessa made for Daniel, he remained indifferent, never wavering. 

He even snuffed out the last glimmer of hope in her eyes himself. 

Daniel took out the paternity test he’d brought and handed it to Tessa. The result was brutal. They weren’t even related. 

What made it even more devastating was that the paternity test dated back twenty–seven years ago. 

Which meant Daniel had gotten a paternity test done on Tessa right after she was born. 

Tessa was falling apart, unable to process the brutal reality. 

She sprang up, lunging for the paper in Daniel’s hand, desperate to rip it to shreds. 

But the iron bars separated them. As she reached out, Daniel moved his hand, keeping it out of her reach. 

The cold iron bars kept her madness at bay. 

Tessa’s outburst was so loud that the guard slammed his stun baton against the iron door, warning Tessa to knock it off. 

“Sit down!” the guard barked. 

Tessa collapsed back into her chair, her face drained of all color. 

“It’s fake, the report has to be fake,” Tessa kept muttering to herself. 

As far as she could remember, her parents‘ relationship had always been good. 

She’d even used that to flex on Aurelia, always saying Aurelia was probably messed up because she came from a broken home.

But the harsh reality hit her like a boomerang, totally blindsiding her. 

So everything was a lie. Tessa thought, her mind reeling. 

It turned out that her parents‘ loving marriage was nothing but a facade. 

Even her “dad“, the man she’d trusted all her life, wasn’t her father at all. 

As Tessa felt her whole world collapsing inside her, Daniel just sat there, watching with that same cold, detached look. 

He didn’t offer a single word of comfort, not a trace of pity in his eyes. 

And right when Tessa was at her lowest, he dropped another bombshell on her. 

“Your birth is nothing to brag about,” Daniel said coldly. “Your mother, in her quest to curry favor with the powerful, abuse, her position to steal that man’s sperm and conceived you via in vitro fertilization. 

“She’d hoped to climb the social ladder by bearing his child, yet he never so much as acknowledged your existence.” 

Daniel snorted with a mocking smirk. 

“Honestly, you’re not even a proper bastard.” 

Those words shattered every bit of pride Tessa had built up over the past twenty years, leaving her with nothing. 

She’d spent years sneering at Aurelia’s background, convinced the elite would never accept someone born like Aurelia. 

But in the end… she still lost out to Aurelia. 

She wasn’t as educated as Aurelia. 

And she couldn’t measure up to Aurelia’s abilities. 

Even the one thing she thought she had left, her family background, couldn’t hold a candle to Aurelia’s. 

Tessa couldn’t stop hearing Kyler’s words from a few days ago, replaying over and over in her mind. 

‘I’m not even good enough to hold a candle for Aurelia, Tessa thought bitterly, the words stinging more than ever. 

The hits kept coming, and Tessa finally broke. She suddenly burst into a hysterical laugh. 

She laughed so hard that tears poured down her cheeks. 

The guard banged on the door again, telling her to quiet down. 

But Tessa didn’t care at all. She just kept laughing, as she’d completely lost her mind. 

Her laughter was like a string stretched to its breaking point, then suddenly snapping. 

It was hoarse and grating. 

The guard came over and forcibly took her away. 

Daniel left as well, as her anguished laughter rang in the air. 

But he didn’t leave right away. Instead, he went to visit Alina. 

Alina had been marking off the days, trying to get through each one, hoping for the moment she could finally leave.
