For a moment, Alina wondered if she’d heard him wrong. 

So, she asked uncertainly, “What did you just say?” 

Cassian’s gaze was calm and cold as he repeated, his voice detached, “I said, it’s never going to happen.” 

“What do you mean?” Alina’s internal alarm bells went off, and her face paled. 

“I’m not going to marry Tessa,” Cassian said, his tone unwavering. 

“And I’m not going to help any of you out,” he added. 

Alina’s mind went blank, trying to wrap her head around what Cassian had just said and the way he was so

“I know more than that,” Cassian said, his voice cold and unflinching. “Back then, you were carrying twins, but your health wasn’t strong enough. One of them didn’t make it. In the end, only one was born.” 

The more Cassian revealed, the more shaken Alina became. 

These were secrets she’d sworn to take to her grave. No one else was ever supposed to know. 

So when Cassian exposed them, it hit her like a punch to the gut. 

“Of course, that’s not all I know,” Cassian said, his eyes cold and unreadable in the dim light. “I also know why he let you live.

As Cassian approached, Dudley spoke in his usual calm tone, “I met with Tessa, as you asked. She was calm and didn’t say a 

word.” 

Dudley paused, then chuckled. “She seems convinced you’ll bail her out, so she’s not admitting to anything. If you’re pressed for time, you might want to go and see her and push her a little.” 

To call it a push was putting it mildly. What Dudley really meant was to provoke her. 

Because Dudley knew Cassian was running out of time.
