Cassian: [My father’s not feeling well these days. If it’s okay, would you go and visit him more in the future.]

Aurelia never understood why Cassian kept asking her to look after Benjamin. 

The first time Cassian asked her to take care of Benjamin was right before his engagement to Tessa. 

Back then, Aurelia mistakenly thought Cassian was worried Benjamin wouldn’t be able to accept his engagement to Tessa, so he wanted her to look after him a bit. 

At that time, she couldn’t help but feel bad for Benjamin, thinking, ‘All that effort raising a son, only for him to pick romance over family.‘ 

The second time Cassian brought it up, Aurelia couldn’t help but feel something was off. 

She actually went out of her way to call Benjamin and check in on him. 

Benjamin explained it was just a case of the flu. It was nothing to worry about, so she let it go. 

Who would ever suspect something like that was going on? 

She’d spent seven years with Cassian and always convinced she had him all figured out. 

But even she never imagined he’d end up where he was now. 

Only now did it hit Aurelia that something wasn’t right. 

Aurelia thought, ‘Could it be that Cassian knew something was up even before he decided to get engaged to Tessa? Is that why he kept asking me to look after Benjamin? 

‘But if he saw this coming, why did he insist on going his own way?‘ 

Aurelia still had no clue what the real story was. 

After all, she had no way to reach Cassian at the moment, so she couldn’t ask him directly. 

Aurelia reached out to the company’s legal team to get the scoop. 

They made it crystal clear to her: if the person in custody flat–out refuses visitors, visitation is generally off the table. 

Not expecting much, Aurelia still went ahead and applied for a visit, making sure the police knew it was she who wanted to 

see him. 

But the police gave her the same reply. Cassian refused to see her. 

Aurelia was getting a headache from all this. 

The next day, Aurelia still made time to visit Benjamin. 

She was mostly worried that if the news about Cassian getting arrested reached Benjamin, it would be too much for him to 

handle. 

Luckily, Benjamin seemed pretty calm. 

It looked like he still hadn’t heard the news.

But it was a problem waiting to blow up. There was no way to keep something like this under wraps forever. Benjamin was going to find out sooner or later. 

Aurelia wanted to see Cassian, if only to finally ask him what exactly he was planning to do. 

Just as Aurelia was running out of options, Jasper showed up at the hospital to visit Benjamin. 

Jasper and Cassian had always been pretty tight, so he might know something. 

Even if he didn’t, maybe he could visit Cassian and ask him on her behalf. 

While Benjamin was in physical therapy, Aurelia jumped at the chance to ask Jasper about Cassian. 

However, Jasper was totally in the dark, too. 

Aurelia urged him again to try visiting Cassian. 

Jasper looked even more exasperated. “I’ve been there, you know. Cassian flat–out refused to see me. And it’s not like I only tried once, either.” 

“He won’t even see you?” Aurelia was genuinely surprised. 

Jasper rubbed his nose, looking pretty down. “Lately, I’ve realized I don’t know Cassian at all.” 

Aurelia didn’t say anything in response. 

Because she realized she couldn’t figure Cassian out either. 

Aurelia stood in the cold wind for ages, her thoughts slowly clearing. Out of nowhere, she remembered Cassian had once tried to give her a business card. 

He told her that if she ever got into a tough spot, she could reach out to that guy. 

She’d refused back then. 

But when he handed her the card, she’d spotted the name and phone number on it. 

Good thing her memory was sharp. Even with just a glance, she’d memorized the number. 

Aurelia hurriedly called the number, and the call was picked up almost instantly. 

The voice on the other end belonged to a middle–aged man, and it was obvious he had her number saved. 

He greeted her naturally, “Ms. Corin, are you running into some trouble?” 

Aurelia got straight to the point. “I want to know what’s going on with Cassian Locke.” 

The man hesitated before answering, “Sorry, Ms. Corin. Mr. Locke only told us to help you if you ever ran into any trouble. He never told us what to do if he was the one in trouble.” 

It was kind of a tongue–twister, but Aurelia understood what he meant. 

In other words, Cassian had only made arrangements for her, not for himself. 

When it came to his own situation, Cassian hadn’t left any instructions at all. 

As Aurelia was still lost in thought, the other party asked again, his tone extra courteous, “Ms. Corin, is there anything troubling you? If you need help with money, say the word.”

After she hung up. Aurelia still felt lost.

The only silver lining was that Cassian was caught up in that powerful figure’s case. All the investigations and interrogations were kept strictly under wraps. Hardly anyone even knew what was going on. 

Benjamin had been retired for years, with almost zero contact with the outside world. 

Even if there was the slightest hint of trouble, Benjamin probably wouldn’t hear a thing. 

‘I’ll keep this under wraps for as long as possible,‘ Aurelia told herself. 

Just as Aurelia was still mulling it over, Abigail came back with the medical report, her face full of worry. 

“What’s wrong? Is there something wrong with the medical report?” Aurelia’s heart skipped a beat. 

Abigail quickly shook her head. “No, no. Mr. Locke’s medical report is much the same as before. No significant changes. Everything’s still within the safe range.” 

“Then, what’s with that look?” Aurelia pressed. 

Abigail leaned in, taking Aurelia’s hand. “How’s your mom been lately?” 

Abigail never brought up Ella out of the blue, so Aurelia’s chest tightened. “Why are you asking?” 

“When I went to pick up the report, I think I saw Ella, your mom. She looked like she was in real pain, crouched all alone in the corner…” Abigail said, her voice thick with worry… 

Before Abigail could even finish her words, Aurelia jumped in, her nerves on edge. “Where exactly did you see her?” 

“In the diagnostics lab on B1,” Abigail replied. 

Aurelia rushed straight to the diagnostics lab on B1. Just like Abigail said, she found Ella crouched in the corner, sweating profusely from the pain. 

“Mom!” Aurelia cried out, hurrying over to support her. 

Ella’s face was deathly pale, not a trace of color left. 

Her forehead was beaded with cold sweat, soaking the wisps of hair at her forehead. 

Her face twisted in pain, but when she saw Aurelia, she managed a weak smile. “Aurelia… What are you doing here? Are you feeling sick?” 

She was hurting so bad that she could barely get the words out, but all she cared about was Aurelia. 

Aurelia fought back the sting in her nose as she helped Ella up from the floor and sat her down in a nearby chair. “What’s wrong? Where does it hurt? Why didn’t you tell me?” 

“I’m fine, really. Don’t worry about me,” Ella said, her voice barely above a whisper. 

But looking at her ghostly pale face and how she could barely sit up, Aurelia wasn’t buying it for a second. 

“I’m calling the doctor,” Aurelia said, pulling out her phone. 

“No…” Ella tried to stop her. 

But as soon as she tried to raise her hand, she was hit by a sudden, intense pain and passed out on the spot.
