Chapter 339

Aurelia never thought she’d run into Cassian like this.

Cassian had grown thinner. Perhaps because of the room’s lighting, his complexion looked a little pale.

His hair had been cut short, revealing a faint scar across his forehead.

Aurelia remembered that scar. It was said to have been left from a car accident when he went to pick up Tessa from a club.

It wasn’t obvious at all, and could’ve been erased with a quick treatment, yet for some unknown reason, he had never dealt with it.

Aurelia fell silent.

It was Cassian who took the initiative to break the quiet. “I heard you’ve been trying to visit me.”

Aurelia gave a soft hum in response.

Cassian’s voice was low, a faint trace of a smile at the corner of his lips. “Why bother coming to see me? You should hate me. It’d be better if we never saw each other again. After all, I’m the one who betrayed you.” –

If she hadn’t moved on, she might have thought the same.

Aurelia just looked at him calmly. When he met her eyes, she said coolly, “Who wants some tragic love–hate drama with you? I only want to focus on my career.”

The past had long since been turned over for her. So she didn’t hate him, just didn’t love him anymore.

They locked eyes for a minute.

A deep, unfathomable smile glimmered in Cassian’s eyes. “That’s good.”

Aurelia’s brows knitted slightly.

Cassian looked away, his voice calm, carrying a hint of world–weariness.

“If you are willing, you can stop by to see my dad occasionally. If you don’t want to, that’s fine too. You don’t owe me anything, and you don’t owe the Locke family. Don’t put any pressure on yourself, and don’t treat it as your responsibility. Just live your own life well.”

Cassian said a lot, while Aurelia stayed quiet.

She had originally come to see him to persuade him to find a better lawyer and try to fight for himself a little more.

Now, she realized there was no point.

So all she had left was silence,

Cassian could tell she had nothing left to say, so he ended the visit early.

Aurelia stood up in silence. She felt she should say goodbye; after all, a farewell was due.

But the words just wouldn’t come out.

Cassian turned to leave with the guard, but paused just before stepping out the door.

“Take care of yourself, Aurelia. We won’t meet again,” he said.

Chapter 339

As his voice fell, his figure disappeared through the doorway.

Aurelia stood frozen for a long moment, still reeling and unable to pull herself together.

When she stepped out of the detention center, to her surprise, a few stray snowflakes were falling from the sky.

Snow was rare in Ashmont.

She walked down the steps, tilting her head back to watch the snowflakes drift down.

Unconsciously, she reached out to catch them.

The snowflakes were so tiny, they melted away the instant they touched her skin, leaving only a single droplet of water.

With Christmas approaching, Aurelia was busier than ever.

She moved most of her work home so she could be around Ella more and keep an eye on her.

“I want to go back to my own place,” Ella said.

“This is your home,” Aurelia cut her off, not even hesitating.

Ella protested, “I feel like I’m in prison here. You watch me every day like you’re guarding against a thief.”

“Then tell me, why do you think I’m keeping such a close eye on you?” Aurelia retorted.

Ella immediately lost her confidence and couldn’t argue back.

In the end, she resigned herself to staying with Aurelia.

After signing the last document, Aurelia checked the time and said, “Let’s go. It’s time for your follow–up at the hospital.”

The results came back all clear, which put Aurelia’s mind at ease.

She then accompanied Ella back to her old apartment to pick up some things.

Downstairs, they bumped into Greta.

Greta’s face was smudged with soot, like she’d just been through a fire,

Ella asked with concern, and Greta explained that an electrical outlet had sparked and set the kitchen on fire.

The fire wasn’t too big, and Greta’s son and his wife were home, so they managed to put it out quickly.

Ella reminded her to be careful with electrical safety and to replace any aging sockets as soon as possible.
