If even Benjamin couldn’t convince Cassian, Aurelia knew she had even less standing or power to do so.

As Aurelia stepped out of the Locke residence, it was snowing again.

She stood outside for only a short while before a thin layer of snow accumulated on her hair and shoulders, her nose gradually turning red from the cold.

The weather forecast said this year would be a harsh winter.

It seemed to be true.

With just a week left until Christmas, Aurelia threw herself back into intense overtime at the company.

Zane tagged everyone in the group chat, asking if anyone wanted to hit the slopes in Monteluc for the holidays.

Aurelia replied that she couldn’t make it as she had to spend time with her mom and finish up the courses Stephen had assigned.

Cruz said he was going home for blind dates.

Marshall, the devoted husband, of course, had to accompany his wife.

Kyler was the last to reply, saying he was too busy to make it.

Zane shot back, “What could you possibly be busy with?”

The remark wasn’t very harmful, but extremely insulting.

Kyler didn’t respond, either because he was annoyed or for some other reason.

Zane sighed, totally deflated. “If none of you are going, then forget it. I’ll just head to Ashmont and bother Aurelia.”

Aurelia shot back, “I seriously don’t have time for you.”

It wasn’t that she was being rude, but she was absolutely buried in work.

Family, career, and studies were all running back–to–back. Even sleep was measured in seconds. Where would she find time to entertain him?

Zane just shrugged. “No worries. I’ll just swing by for the Gold Gauntlet CEO’s wedding.”

Aurelia froze.

‘Gideon’s getting married? Already?‘ Aurelia thought, her mind spinning.

He’d only gotten engaged a month ago.

Just as Aurelia wrapped up her morning meeting, Miranda knocked and came in to say someone was here to see her.

It was Chloe Miller.

Aurelia told Miranda to show her in.

Chloe was clearly the spoiled rich girl. Her clothes and styling exuded understated elegance.

She was all warmth and energy, pulling Aurelia into a big hug as soon as she walked in.

Aurelia wasn’t really used to that kind of enthusiasm and felt a bit out of her depth.

“Did I surprise you?” Chloe grinned, her eyes sparkling.

Aurelia nodded, just to be polite. “I am.”

“Gideon was supposed to come with me today, but he got called into a meeting last minute and couldn’t get away, so I came on my own,” Chloe said.

She grabbed Aurelia’s hand and kept talking. “Honestly, ever since that party, I’ve been wanting to come see you again, but I’ve been busy preparing for the wedding, so it got delayed. You’re not mad at me, are you?”

“Of course not,” Aurelia replied.

Aurelia honestly couldn’t wrap her head around Chloe’s way of thinking.

They’d only met once. They really weren’t that close.

But Chloe just grinned. “I’m glad you’re not mad at me.”

As she spoke, she showed Aurelia her wedding ring. “Isn’t it pretty? Gideon picked it out for me. I think he’s got good taste, so he even picked out my dress for me.”

“Even though it’s rushed, Gideon is still doing his best to give me the best wedding possible,” she added.

Looking a little troubled, Chloe continued, “Honestly, I wanted to have a couple more years of fun, I’m still so young! But Gideon’s already thirty and ready to settle down, so I’m reluctantly agreeing to marry him!“.

Even though she looked a bit conflicted, her voice overflowed with the happiness she couldn’t hide.

“Oh!” Chloe suddenly slapped her forehead. “Look at me, I got so caught up chatting that I almost forgot why I came!”

She pulled a wedding invitation out of her bag and handed it to Aurelia with exaggerated ceremony. “I’m here to deliver our wedding invitation! I really hope you can come and attend our wedding.”

Aurelia accepted the invitation and agreed with a polite smile.

Chloe hung around for a bit longer before finally saying her goodbyes and leaving after getting a call from Gideon.

Aurelia looked down at the wedding invitation in her hand and smiled quietly, saying nothing.

“Can you believe that? She was literally flexing her romance right in your face!” Mia complained on WhatsApp.

And when Gideon’s name came up, Mia was totally fired up. “Has Gideon even tried to explain himself yet?”

Aurelia gave a faint, almost indifferent smile. “What’s there to explain? Misunderstandings between adults don’t need clearing up. Missing each other just means there was no fate.”

Mia fired back, totally on board. “Honestly, missing out is a blessing in disguise! If anyone should feel regret, it’s definitely not you.”

“Gideon, don’t you feel even a little regret?” After hearing that Gideon was about to marry Chloe, Jasper just had to ask.

Gideon’s gaze grew distant. After a long silence, he finally replied, “No matter what you choose, there’s always going to be something you regret.”

If he chose love, the Quinn family would be gone.

If he chose the Quinn family, he’d lose love.

Besides, what right did he have to let Auerlia choose a man burdened with massive debt like him?

Jasper just muttered, “But that’s eight years.”

Jasper suddenly paused when he remembered the seven years Aurelia had spent by Cassian’s side.

On Christmas eve, Aurelia let Ella have her way, and they spent the holiday at their old place.

Ella had lived there for twenty years and got along great with all the neighbors, so she wanted to make the rounds for greetings.

So after the Christmas eve dinner, Ella headed out to visit everyone in the neighborhood.

Aurelia took care of some paperwork, revised her thesis once more, and sent it to Stephen’s email.

She checked the time; it was only nine in the evening.

She took a cup of hot milk and stood on the balcony for a while.

After the recent cold wave passed, the weather had warmed slightly over the past couple of days.

Across the river, fireworks were going off sporadically.

In the neighborhood, kids were out with laughter, livening up the atmosphere.

But Aurelia’s attention drifted instead to the height between the building and the ground.

The twelfth floor was really high.

According to Greta, when smoke came out of her kitchen that day, Cassian knocked but got no response.

Worried that Ella might be napping and unaware of the fire, he rushed to find Greta and climbed bare–handed from her apartment to the twelfth floor to put out the fire.

At that point, Aurelia and Cassian had already broken up, and Cassian was getting pretty close with Tessa.

Cassian honestly had no reason to go that far.

So Aurelia couldn’t understand it.

When Ella came back from making the rounds, she brought Aurelia all sorts of treats from the neighbors.

Only then did Aurelia pull herself out of her thoughts and head back in.

She had just settled in when there was a knock at the door.

Ella figured it was just another neighbor coming by, so she cheerfully went to answer it.

But to her surprise, it was Mila standing outside.

Her eyes were red, clearly having just cried.
