As if something had just occurred to her, Ella blurted out before Aurelia could say a word, “He’s not your father!” 

Aurelia was left speechless. She thought to herself, ‘I hadn’t even asked yet. 

When Aurelia first had that thought, her feelings were all over the place. She honestly had zero feelings for Daniel. She never liked him, even before she discovered he was Tessa’s father. 

When Ella said that, Aurelia let out a sigh of relief. “That’s a relief,” Aurelia said, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders. She felt so much better. 

“But yeah, I did go out with him back then,” Ella added. 

When Aurelia shot her a look, Ella huffed, “Oh, come on! You get to have a history, but I can’t? Seriously, who hasn’t picked the wrong person before?” 

Aurelia was speechless. Then, Ella explained, “We were college classmates and started dating in our junior year. After graduation, he landed a government job and got shipped off to some remote post, while I stayed in Ashmont and found a pretty decent gig. That’s when we kicked off the whole long–distance thing. 

“Back then, we were both full of dreams for the future. I was all in, just hoping he’d get promoted and transferred back to Ashmont so we could finally tie the knot. 

“I even had the location of our future home all mapped out. But then, out of nowhere, he started icing me out. He wouldn’t pick up my calls, never replied to my letters… 

“I was so desperate, I even showed up at his workplace, but he dodged me every time. No reason, not even a lame excuse. He just ghosted me overnight, cut me off cold. 

“On my way back, I got into a car accident and spent almost two weeks in the hospital. But he didn’t call once. After surviving that, I finally saw him for who he was. I accepted the way he dumped me and erased him from my life completely. We never spoke again, ever,” Ella finished, her voice steady but still carrying a hint of pain. 

Years had gone by, and when Ella brought it up, she talked about it like it was no big deal anymore. But Aurelia’s heart still ached for her. She believed anyone who betrays true feelings deserves the worst. 

“After the way he treated me, you think I’d ever have his kid? I’m not stupid! I only found out he was Tessa’s father when I ran into him recently, and it totally grossed me out. And get this. He told me he’s infertile. Can you believe that?” Ella said, laughing bitterly. 

Aurelia was shocked. “That’s wild!‘ 

Ella was genuinely thrilled. “So he’s been someone else’s dad for free for over twenty years!” 

That was a befitting fate in Aurelia’s eyes. People do reap what they sow. No exceptions. 

Around mid–February, Regal Investment landed another major project. Aurelia treated the whole company to a team- building celebration at a club. Miranda picked the venue, and Aurelia didn’t realize it was the Lucky Seven Club until she finished her business. 

She should probably give Miranda a heads–up. She’d blacklisted that place herself. But everyone was already there, and Aurelia didn’t want to be the buzzkill boss, so she just went along with the crowd and walked in. 

The Lucky Seven Club was one of Ashmont’s top luxury spots, and that was why Miranda chose it. Everyone was having a 

blast.

When the party was winding down, Aurelia got up, waved goodbye to everyone, and got ready to head out. She still had to prep for her thesis defense back home. 

Walter headed out with her, while Miranda stuck around to make sure everyone got home safe after the party. But as they stepped out of the private room, they caught a faint cry for help. It sounded familiar. 

Aurelia instinctively glanced back toward where the sound had come from. The lights were way too dim. She couldn’t make out a thing. So, she turned to Walter, “Did you hear that?” 

Walter shook his head, “Nope, didn’t hear anything.” 

‘Maybe I was just hearing things, Aurelia thought to herself. She’d had a few drinks with everyone that night, so maybe it was just the booze messing with her head. She didn’t bother to look into it and just left with Walter. 

Meanwhile, in the private room at the end of the hall, Karlie’s mouth was covered so tightly by the man’s hand that she was nearly suffocating. He pinned her down so hard she couldn’t even struggle. 

“Who are you trying to fool? You dressed so provocatively to get my attention, and now you want to act all innocent? Spare me,” the man sneered. 

“Honestly, I’ve wanted you for ages. I’ve watched those little videos of yours over and over. And tonight, you’re gonna join me for some real fun. I promise you’ll be begging for more!” he said, his voice dripping with sleaze. 

Karlie was completely immobilized, barely able to move as her strength faded away. Her face flushed and puffed up from lack of oxygen, her eyes beginning to spasm uncontrollably. Only then did the man finally loosen his grip on her mouth and 

nose. 

A rush of air flooded her lungs, and she choked and coughed violently, desperate for breath. The man’s hand moved down from her chin, reaching for her chest. She was so drained she couldn’t even muster the strength to shove him off. 

Gasping for breath, she accused him, “I trusted you as a friend, and this is what you do to me? You bastard!” 

The strange feeling in her body made her panic. She demanded, her voice shaky, “What did you make me drink? Why am I so weak? Why am I burning up?” 

“Oh, it’s the good stuff. Remember that substance you told me to give to Aurelia? However, I add an extra dose. Supposed to make you lose your mind,” the man sneered. 

Then, he tore her clothes apart in one rough motion, murmured in her ear, “just enjoy it!” 

That night, Karlie was not only used and abused by the man, but he even recorded everything on his phone. As he left, he threatened, “Whenever I want you, you’d better come running. If not, I’ll blast those videos all over the internet!” 

“You sick bastard!” Karlie cursed, her voice shaking with fury. 

But the guy just grinned, shamelessly groping her chest. “Damn, you really are something. I only became friends with you. for these headlights, and now I finally got my hands on them!” 

“Get the hell out!” Karlie spat, her voice shaking with fury and humiliation. The man left with a smug grin, swaggering out of the private room. 

It was already past midnight by the time Karlie finally managed to stumble out, barely able to stand. The whole club was dead silent. 

She staggered toward the exit, barely keeping her balance, when someone stepped out of the next private room and ran straight into her. 

As soon as she saw who it was, Karlie instinctively turned her face away, afraid he’d recognize her. But Liam recognized her right away. Anyone could tell what had just happened to Karlie.

For once, Liam actually showed some kindness and asked, “Do you want me to call the cops for you?”

“No…. don’t,” Karlie stammered, her voice trembling. There was no way she’d dare call the cops. 

He was only offering help. Since she refused, he didn’t push it. So he just looked away and was about to walk off. 

Seeing this, Karlie bit down hard on her lip, wrestling with herself for ages before finally blurting out, “Liam, is it because you slept with Aurelia that you fell for her?” 

Liam stopped in his tracks and turned to look at her. He saw Karlie kicking herself, full of regret. She always thought that the time she set Aurelia up was the reason Liam started liking her. 

“What do you know?” Liam’s voice went cold, his eyes sharp as blades. 

“That night, Aurelia got drugged here, my friend told me you were the one who took her away,” Karlie stammered. 

Liam stared her down, his eyes flashing with a cold light. “You take this secret to your grave. If you ever spill it, don’t blame me if I come after you.” 

The dangerous look in Liam’s eyes made Karlie shudder, chills racing down her spine. She bobbed her head, voice trembling, “I–I understand, I promise I’ll keep my mouth shut.”
