Hearing the news, Aurelia felt a wave of relief wash over her, though she couldn’t quite explain why.

Aurelia didn’t ask any more about Cassian. 

Noticing that Mia seemed off, Aurelia told her to head home early. 

Mia didn’t want to stick around either, especially not with that disgusting couple in the same room. 

So she followed Aurelia’s suggestion and slipped out early. 

After making sure Mia got home safely, Aurelia headed back to the party. 

Right before the party started, Herbert came over with Leonie to greet Aurelia. 

Aurelia never minded Herbert or Leonie before. They’d barely interacted, after all.

So Aurelia wasn’t exactly warm to them. If anything, she was a bit cold. 

Leonie couldn’t help but read too much into it. As Aurelia went up to give her speech, Leonie frowned and asked Herbert, “Herbert, Ms. Corin seems kind of cold to me.” 

Herbert just shrugged it off. “Maybe she just doesn’t know you well.” 

But Leonie wasn’t convinced. 

Being a woman herself, she could easily sense Aurelia’s dislike. Girls just have a sixth sense about these things. 

And not long ago, the role she’d just snatched from Mia was taken right back from her before she could even settle into it. 

Leonie had done some digging and heard it was Regal Investment’s boss who made the call. 

But she’d never even crossed paths with Regal Investment’s boss. She didn’t understand why they would have it out for her. 

So she started to suspect Mia might have ties to Regal Investment. 

But she shot that idea down almost immediately. ‘Seriously, what could Mia possibly have to do with Regal Investment’s boss? She’s just some girl with no family.’ 

‘If it weren’t for Herbert’s Grandma spoiling her, she’d never have had a shot at marrying Herbert, Leonie grumbled to herself. 

That was what really got under Leonie’s skin. 

She’d tried everything to get on Herbert’s Grandma’s good side, but the old lady just wouldn’t give her the time of day. She only ever cared about Mia. 

Herbert’s Grandma kept pulling rank as the family matriarch, always pressuring Herbert and refusing to let him divorce Mia. 

Lost in these thoughts, Leonie zoned out for a moment. 

Herbert’s voice snapped her back to reality. “What are you thinking about?”

“Nothing.” Leonie said, curving her lips into an innocent smile. Herbert, take me to more parties like this, okay? I want to pick up some social skills.” 

“What’s the point of learning that stuff?” Herbert replied with a faint smile. 

Leonic teased, her voice soft and sweet, “Obviously, so I can help you out.” 

“No need,” Herbert said, reaching out and ruffling her hair, doting as ever. 

Her heart instantly felt warm and fuzzy. 

After the party wrapped up, Miranda helped Aurelia, who was a bit drunk, down the stairs. 

She’d already called Walter ahead of time, telling him to bring the car around to the front entrance. 

Inside the elevator, Miranda gave Aurelia a helpless look. She was clearly drunk. 

“Why did you drink so much?” Miranda asked, a little exasperated. 

Aurelia’s voice was a little hazy from the alcohol as she replied, “I just felt happy tonight.” Sure, the company’s big move was definitely something to celebrate, butit wasn’t 

When they reached the front entrance, Miranda’s expression suddenly tensed as she

Aurelia was really out of it. She flopped into the seat and passed out right away, totally oblivious to what was going on outside. 

Miranda lowered her voice, tense and annoyed. “Mr. Locke, why are you breaking your promise?” 

He had said only once. 

“I won’t bother her,” Cassian said. 

“Come on, you already did,” Miranda retorted. 

After a brief pause, Cassian promised, “This is the last time.” 

Miranda bit her lip, but in the end, she gave in. 

The car glided smoothly down the street, city lights flickering to life as the cityscape streamed past in the rearview mirror. 

Everything was peaceful. 

When Jasper called, Cassian hit decline without a second thought

At the same time, he shot a careful look at Aurelia in the rearview mirror. 

He hung up so fast it didn’t wake Aurelia. She just kept dozing in the back seat. 

Once they dropped her off downstairs, Cassian killed the engine 

The sudden silence snapped Aurelia out of her doze. 

Her head was still spinning. 

She hadn’t had a drink in forever, and her tolerance was shot. 

She glanced out the window and realized they were already at her place, but she didn’t get out right away. 

After rubbing her churchs, she told the driver, “Drive me over to Plum Hills Lake. I need to clear my head.” 

Cassian’s grip on the steering wheel tightened. 

He didn’t say a word, just started the car and headed for Plum Hills Lake. 

When they arrived at Plum Hills Lake, Aurelia just stayed in the car. 

She rolled down the window, letting the evening breeze fill the car. 

The soft breeze, tinged with the coolness of early autumn, was refreshing and helped clear her mind.

Aurelia leaned against the window, sat there for a few minutes just enjoying the air, then asked the driver to head back home. 

When they got back downstairs, Mia and Joey were already waiting outside for her. 

As soon as Aurelia got out of the car, the two flanked her, each supporting her by an arm. 

Mia said, “Miranda called and said you’d had too much to drink, so she asked me to come pick you up. We’ve been waiting forever. Was there traffic?” 

“Just went to Plum Hills Lake for some fresh air. Needed to clear my head before coming back,” Aurelia explained. 

“Let’s get you inside, your hands are ice–cold,” Mia said, gently pulling her along. 

Their voices gradually faded away until their figures vanished at the entrance of the apartment complex. 

Only then did Cassian finally tear his gaze away and check his phone. 

There were already several missed calls and a string of texts from Jasper. 

He called him back. 

Jasper picked up almost instantly, his voice full of worry. “Cassian! Finally, you picked up! What were you doing? I was freaking out when I couldn’t reach you!” 

“What’s there to worry about? I’m not dead,” Cassian replied. 

But this time, that usual laid–back drawl sounded hollow, completely drained of any energy. 

“Where are you right now?” Jasper asked, sounding anxious. 

I’m over by Central Road,” Cassian replied.

Jasper froze for a second, realizing it was where Aurelia lived. 

Dude, you went to see Aurelia again, didn’t you?” Jasper blurted out. 

Cassian didn’t deny it. 

He adjusted his seat so that, just by looking up, he could see Aurelia’s bedroom window. 

The light inside was still on. 

Even though it was far away, that distant glow felt like it was shining straight into his soul. 

He knew he shouldn’t be here, shouldn’t be bothering Aurelia. 

But he just couldn’t help himself. 

Every time, Cassian would tell himself, “This is it. No more after this.’ 

Just one more look. Just let me see her one last time, and I’ll stop, he promised himself. 

As long as he could catch a glimpse of her, it was enough to keep him going a little longer.
