As they got close to the stone steps, Aurelia instinctively looked toward them. 

This place brought back memories for her too.

But up on the steps, there was someone praying. 

Even the priest leading Aurelia stopped, staring at the figure bowing with every step up the stairs. “Someone’s really out here seeking a safety talisman in this cold?” 

Then the priest added, “But braving the cold like that really shows true devotion. The Safety Ring will be even more blessed because of it.” 

Aurelia’s legs felt heavy as stone. She was rooted to the spot, unable to take another step. 

Just one glance at that silhouette, and Aurelia knew exactly who it was.

Aurelia gave him a rough time frame. 

The priest checked the records for that period, but still came up empty for Miranda’s name. 

But the charm really was from Plum Hill Church, no doubt about it. 

Left with no other choice, Aurelia had to call Miranda. 

Miranda tried to play it cool at first, but when Aurelia brought up the records and said her name wasn’t there, she finally fessed up. 

She stammered, “Aurelia, I’m sorry. I didn’t actually get this Safety Ring for you.” 

“Then who did?” Aurelia pressed. 

Miranda froze, fear flickering in her eyes. She just couldn’t bring herself to say: it. 

But when Aurelia kept pressing, Miranda finally spoke up, her voice trembling with anxiety. 

“It was Mr. Locke,” she whispered. 

“He’s the one who gave it to me,” Miranda murmured. 

“He told me not to let you know. Said if you found out it was from him, you’d never accept it,” Miranda explained in a low voice. 

“Aurelia, I know I was wrong,” Miranda said, voice trembling. 

But as Miranda kept apologizing, Aurelia’s mind was buzzing. Everything felt distant and unreal. 

It was like she was underwater; every sound was muffled. 

She just couldn’t wrap her head around it. 

‘Why?‘ Aurelia thought, her mind in turmoil. ‘Why would Cassian go to such lengths for me?‘ 

‘Isn’t Tessa the one he loves?‘ she questioned herself, confusion swirling inside. ‘So why go behind my back for something so pointless?” 

Suddenly, it dawned on her that she’d never really known Cassian at all.

As Aurelia left the vow altar, she walked through the bamboo grove once more. 

She saw that figure again, still kneeling in the pouring rain, lost his prayer. 

The rain was coming down even harder now.

Even with her umbrella, Aurelia still shivered from the chill that seeped through with the rain. 

‘He must be freezing right now, soaked to the bone like that, Aurelia thought. 

After leaving the church, Aurelia went on a work trip to Grendel City. 

While she was there, she ended up tagging along with Darren to a public cocktail party. 

Meanwhile, Cassian was flat on his back in the hospital, burning up with a fever that just wouldn’t quit. 

Jasper never left his side, barely catching any sleep, too worried to relax for even a second. 

It wasn’t until the third day that Cassian’s fever finally broke.

In the end, it was Cassian who finally broke the silence. 

Cassian said, ‘Honestly, maybe having my brain fried wouldn’t be the worst thing. 

“At least then I wouldn’t have to keep thinking about everything. Cassian said, a wry smile on his lips.
