Chapter 378

[Yeah, while we’re alive, everything has meaning.] Aurelia replied.

Back when she first learned Cassian might be sentenced to death, her thoughts were all over the place.

She could accept living the rest of her life without ever crossing paths with Cassian again.

But she never imagined their story would end in death.

Even at her angriest, she never thought it would come to this.

By the time Cassian landed in Ashmont, it was already late at night.

Jasper pulled up with the car and asked, “Are we heading straight to Aurelia?”

Cassian paused for a moment, then called Miranda first.

Miranda was caught off guard when she answered. “Ms. Corin didn’t come back to Ashmont. She went to Grendel.”

After a long silence, Cassian finally replied in a muffled tone, “Alright.”

Jasper was still waiting for Cassian to say something, but Cassian just got out of the car with a grim look on his face.

“What’s wrong? Not going to see Aurelia?” Jasper asked.

‘She flew to Grendel,” Cassian replied.

He really hadn’t expected Mia to throw him a curveball like that.

But honestly, he brought this on himself, so he couldn’t blame anyone else.

Cassian had barely stepped out of the airport before he found himself heading right back in to buy a ticket for the next flight to Grendel.

The weather was beautiful on the day of Joey’s competition, and Aurelia personally took her to the venue.

She promised to wait outside the whole time, making sure Joey would see her as soon as she walked out after the competition, the very first person she’d see.

Joey was over the moon, like her dream had finally come true.

For years, whenever she went to competitions, it was always just the nanny and bodyguards by her side.

Unlike the other contestants, she did not have her family with her

But now, things were different. She finally had someone from her own family picking her up, just like the other kids.

“Once I win the prize money, I’ll buy you all the best snacks!” Joey chirped.

Aurelia said, “Sure, I’d love to.”

Just as they arrived at the competition venue, the driver suddenly slammed on the brakes.

Aurelia and Joey, caught off guard, lurched forward.

Joey reacted in a flash, reaching out to shield Aurelia, keeping her from banging her head.

But Joey’s own head hit the table and seat in front of her with a dull thud.

Once she steadied herself, Aurelia quickly checked on Joey, worried she might have gotten hurt.

Joey shook her head, insisting she was fine.

The driver explained that someone tried to stop the car.

Before he could even finish, a middle–aged couple started banging on the back window, yelling for us to give their kid back.

When Joey saw who was outside, she freaked out, clutching her head and burying herself in Aurelia’s arms.

The bodyguards in the back seat immediately got out to chase the couple away.

Aurelia didn’t need to ask. She already knew exactly who these people were.

She pulled Joey close, shielding her and covering her ears so she wouldn’t have to hear any of the chaos outside.

But no matter how hard Aurelia tried to block it out, the filthy words still managed to reach her ears.

They were yelling that Aurelia and Darren had stolen their child and refused to give her back, accusing Darren of using his power to bully them.

At the same time, they kept calling out to Joey, insisting they were her real parents and begging her to come back to them.

They promised they’d cherish her, shower her with affection from now on.

If they really cared about Joey, why would they have abandoned her in the first place?‘ Aurelia thought bitterly.

She’d heard from the servants at the estate that Joey was already four years old when she was abandoned, old enough to understand what was happening.

Her birth parents left her because she couldn’t speak, suspected she was mentally disabled, and were afraid of the cost of treating her.

When Joey was brought to the orphanage, her back was covered in scars from abuse, and she was so thin she was just skin and bones.

They dumped her in a heartless spot, deep in the woods where nobody ever went.

If it weren’t for some random hiker passing through, Joey might’ve just starved to death out there.

After the bodyguards finally chased those two away, Aurelia got Joey out of the car, still holding her tight.

Thankfully, they made it in time for the competition.

While waiting for Joey to finish her round, Aurelia finally realized just how insanely difficult this competition was.

The real kicker? Joey was the youngest contestant out of everyone.

Pretty much all the other participants were master’s or PhD students from prestigious universities.

Russell was surprised to see her, and when he found out she was here with a family member for the competition, he couldn’t help but ask a few more questions out of curiosity.

When he heard her family member’s name was Joey, his eyes practically lit up.

“You said your family member is Joey Keith?” Russell asked, his voice full of excitement.

Aurelia had rarely seen Russell so flustered before.

Once Russell confirmed Aurelia was Joey’s guardian, he got even more excited. “I’ve been wanting to meet Joey for ages! I’ve searched everywhere for a chance, but never succeeded. I can’t believe she’s your family. That’s incredible! Ms. Corin, could you introduce me?”

Aurelia had met Russell through Tyson, so she was well aware of his status in the computer science field.

‘Even someone like him is this impressed… Aurelia thought, a little stunned.

‘Joey’s really that incredible!‘ Aurelia thought, feeling a surge of pride.

Russell even declared that the champion of this competition was already decided.

Just as Russell had predicted, Joey walked away with the trophy, winning the whole competition.

Joey made good on her promise and took Aurelia out for dinner.

But their dinner had an unexpected guest joining them, Russell himself.

Most of what they talked about at dinner went right over Aurelia’s head.

All she could tell was that it had something to do with network technology.

As dinner was winding down, Darren showed up, saying he was there to take them home.

He sat down next to Aurelia and leaned in, speaking in a low voice. “I’ll need you to help me out for a bit.”

Aurelia got it right away.

She glanced around the restaurant and, sure enough, spotted Juliana off in a corner.

Even from across the room, Aurelia could feel the intense jealousy in Juliana’s eyes.

Darren’s sister–in–law was next–level crazy, not one’s average nutcase.

Just one encounter with her a few years ago had haunted Aurelia ever since.

The worst part? She was seriously unstable, the kind one really didn’t want to cross.

No wonder Darren was always at his wits‘ end dealing with her.

Sometimes, Aurelia just couldn’t figure it out: how could someone as amazing as Zofia have a sister who was so out there?

“The good ones never live long, but the villains just never seem to die,‘ Aurelia thought with a wry sigh.

After dinner, Aurelia instinctively hooked her arm around Darren’s.

Before they even made it out of the restaurant, the sound of dishes smashing echoed behind them.

They had barely reached the lobby when Juliana stormed out after them. “Darren, stay away from that woman!”

Darren’s face darkened as he said firmly, “She’s my fiancée.

“Call it off! Right now! I won’t let you marry her!” Juliana yelled.
