Chapter 42Â

Aurelia hadn’t expected such a reproach from Cassian, especially with Gideon around. Instantly, her chest tightened with anger.Â
‘His damn rules again! He keeps reminding me of his rules, and I am the only person who is required to play by them,‘ she thought indignantly.Â
The music for clocking out started right before the atmosphere became tense.Â
Without hesitation, Aurelia thrust her resignation letter into Cassian’s palm and said, “Not working time anymore. I don’t need to follow the rules here, do I, Mr. Locke?”Â
Without another glance at Cassian, she turned around and headed straight for her desk to pack up. Cassian’s expression turned sullen.Â
Gideon’s eyes were glued to the resignation letter in Cassian’s hand. “Cassian, as far as I know, Aurelia handed in her resignation a long time ago. Why haven’t you approved it yet?”Â
“It’s an internal matter of Honoria Capital.” Cassian gripped the letter. He looked formidable when he became expressionless. “None of your business.”Â
Gideon gave a faint smile. “I will never interfere with how you run your company.”Â
Cassian’s reply was blunt. “Good.”Â
Gideon kept that faint smile on his lips, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “As a friend, I would like to remind you that you can’t keep her if she is determined to leave.”Â

On the day of the party, Aurelia ended up arriving a bit late because she got stuck in a traffic jam.Â
As the guest of honor, Gideon was busy socializing and networking with people, so he couldn’t pick up Aurelia.Â
Aurelia didn’t feel slighted or angry. She thoughtfully told Gideon that she would go find him after she arrived at the party.Â
To her surprise, she ran into Jasper and Tessa right at the entrance of the building where the party was held.Â
Jasper was waiting for Tessa, and running into Aurelia was the last thing he saw coming.Â
“Why do you pop up wherever I am?” Jasper didn’t bother to conceal his hatred toward Aurelia when he was alone with her. “Like a disgusting fly.”Â
Jasper loved to jeer at Aurelia, and she had ignored his offenses because of Cassian. Things were different now.Â
Aurelia turned a cold shoulder on Cassian, so she wouldn’t tolerate Jasper anymore. “Shouldn’t you reflect on why the disgusting fly likes to follow you everywhere?”Â

Shock rooted Jasper to the spot because he hadn’t expected Aurelia to bite back.Â
With anger and embarrassment, he snarled, “Aurelia, what are you smug for? Didn’t you say that you would quit your job? Why do you still stay in Honoria Capital? Have you no shame, hypocrite? Who are you trying toÂ
fool?”Â
“Why don’t you help persuade Cassian to approve my resignation as soon as possible? Then, you will know who should take the blame,” Aurelia responded.Â
It was a piece of cake for Aurelia to beat Jasper, whose mouth moved faster than his brain, in a bicker.Â
Jasper was irritated. Right then, Tessa arrived.Â
Jasper changed his expression in the blink of an eye. Grinning from ear to ear, he hurried over and held the car door for Tessa. “Tessa, you’re finally here! I’ve been waiting forever.”Â
‘If he had a tail, he would be wagging it like a dog,‘ Aurelia thought.Â
Tessa was dressed to the nines. With a bright smile, she spoke to Jasper, “Sorry that I got held up on the way.”Â
She got out of the car and was surprised to see Aurelia there.Â
Recalling how Gideon and Aurelia had been thick as thieves lately, Tessa guessed that Aurelia had come for Gold Gauntlet’s connections and resources.Â
She shifted her gaze away from Aurelia with a sneer and then talked to Jasper.Â
Right then, Gideon called to check whether Aurelia had arrived. Aurelia answered the call and then hurried to the party hall.Â
Tessa asked Jasper, “Why is she here? Did Gold Gauntlet invite her over?”Â
Jasper scoffed with open disdain. “Impossible! Who knows how she got the invitation? She is sly. I think she came for the resources.”Â
Tessa felt much more confident after she learned that Jasper shared the same mind as her. “People like her coming up from the bottom won’t let any opportunity slip by. To them, opportunities like this are precious.”Â
Jasper was unhappy after he had lost the bicker to Aurelia. Now, he didn’t want to talk about Aurelia at all. “Forget her. She just keeps showing up. I would dismiss her right away if I were Gideon.”Â
“Cassian draws a clear line between work and personal life. If Ms. Corin does nothing wrong, Cassian won’t dismiss her for no reason,” Tessa explained.Â
Jasper sighed. “You are right. Cassian is way too upright for his own good. That is why he gets fooled by the sly Aurelia.”Â
“Enough about her. Did Gideon bring a date?” Tessa was more interested in this new topic.Â
Jasper shook his head. “Nope. Where can he get one? You are the only woman who is outstanding enough to be his date.”Â

Hearing this, Tessa grinned. “Let’s go. I brought him a gift to celebrate his new job.”Â
Tessa and Jasper walked into the party hall when Gideon greeted Aurelia.Â

Tessa strode over confidently and said, “Gideon, congratulations! I brought you a gift. I hope you reach new heights at Gold Gauntlet.”Â
“Thanks.” Gideon took the gift and quickly handed it off to his assistant. He didn’t bother to open it.Â
Tessa had expected Gideon to open the gift right on the spot, so her eyes dimmed with disappointment. “Gideon, aren’t you going to open it?”Â
“Later. I’m a bit busy right now,” Gideon answered.Â
Instantly, Tessa’s mood improved. “I am sure that you will love it. I always remember your preferences.”Â
What a subtle speech! It hinted that Tessa and Gideon were intimate with each other, and Gideon wouldn’t feel offended by it.Â
Tessa was quite satisfied with her performance.Â
Right then, someone came to socialize with Gideon. Tessa picked up a goblet of champagne to play the role of Gideon’s date as she had abroad.Â
Gideon slightly raised his arm, and Aurelia cooperatively took it. Instantly, the smile on Tessa’s face froze.Â
Jasper became slack–jawed. He wished to leap forward and ask if Gideon was possessed.Â
He wondered, ‘Why did Gideon choose Aurelia? Why? I am fine with any woman in this world, but Aurelia.Â
Gideon didn’t have the time to entertain Tessa and Jasper. He led Aurelia away and socialized with others, including the board directors and the business partners of Gold Gauntlet.Â
Gold Gauntlet had been in existence for nearly fifty years, and it owned a wider range of businesses than Honoria Capital which had been founded only seven years ago.Â
Compared to Gold Gauntlet, Honoria Capital was ultimately a newbie in the game.Â
Honoria Capital now held more assets and seemed more promising than Gold Gauntlet, but it couldn’t outrank Gold Gauntlet in the financial world yet. Therefore, people still thought highly of Gold Gauntlet.Â
That was exactly why Tessa showed up at the party. She had thought that Gideon, given their old relationship, would let her share the glory.Â
Instantly, her eyes turned red. Right then, Cassian arrived.Â
Aurelia knew that Cassian wouldn’t miss this party. ‘How can he be absent since Tessa is here?‘ she thought.Â
