Chapter 49Â
“Mr. Locke, what’s your comment on the seven years I devoted to you? I am curious.” Aurelia repeated her question decisively.Â
Tessa was also interested in the answer because it reflected how Cassian thought of Aurelia.Â
In Cassian’s eyes, there was a surge of emotions, and it soon disappeared.Â
Cassian’s tone was as indifferent and flat as ever. “You did okay as a secretary. When it came to projects…” Cassian finished his answer with a sneer.Â
He made himself clear with that sneer. Obviously, he looked down upon Aurelia.Â
Aurelia had exchanged seven years of youth for that shameful comment.Â
To love Cassian with all of her heart might be the biggest mistake of her life.Â
Aurelia turned pale in the face as her heart ached for Cassian’s contempt. ‘I thought my heart wouldn’t ache for him anymore, she thought.Â
After seven years of training, her heart was strong enough to make her look calm in a situation like this. “It seems I messed things up. Thanks for your comment, Mr. Locke.”Â
Then, she looked away from Cassian and turned to Gilbert with an apologetic smile. “Looks like you made the right decision, Mr. Kim. Sorry for the trouble caused. Goodbye.”Â
Cassian just stood there, watching Aurelia walk into the elevator and disappear into it.Â
After the elevator doors slid shut, Tessa heaved a sigh of relief.Â
‘I was overreacting,‘ Tessa thought. ‘Cassian doesn’t care about Aurelia at all. He shows her no mercy even if she is in a predicament.‘Â
Delighted, she said with a faint smile on her face, “Cassian, let’s go.” Cassian nodded.Â

Aurelia had a nice dinner with Mia. She successfully hid her true emotions from Mia.Â
There was a moment she felt grateful for her self–control, which had helped her through all the battles in the business world. Thanks to her self–control, she didn’t upset Mia that night.Â
Except her, nobody knew that the broken heart inside her chest was bleeding.Â
Before the dinner was over, Mia got a call from her agent and was told to catch a late flight for an out–of–town audition.Â
Aurelia had to hurry to the airport to see Mia off.Â

Mia was reluctant to leave. “I wanted to spend some time with you, but here came a new job?Â
“Work’s important. I’m fine,” Aurelia said.Â
“Really?” Mia studied Aurelia’s expression carefully.Â
Aurelia gave a bright smile. “Of course. I dumped the jerk, woke up to the hard truth, and found myself a new job. Everything goes well.” She was a good actress.Â
Mia didn’t see through Aurelia’s lies, but she felt restless, “You spent your whole youth on Cassian, so it must be difficult for you to get over him.”Â
The next second, Aurelia would break down.Â
Fortunately, the announcements at the airport attracted Mia’s attention in time.Â
“Go, or you will miss your flight!” Aurelia urged.Â
Mia headed for the boarding gate, and she glanced back at Aurelia several times along the way.Â
Aurelia stayed right where she was, smiling and waving at Mia. She kept waving till Mia was out of sight. Then, her hand dropped feebly.Â
After Mia left, Aurelia grabbed a cab and headed back to her place.Â
When she was about one mile away from her home, a traffic jam happened because of a car accident ahead.Â
Then, Aurelia decided to get out of the car and walk home. Lately, she had been exhausted because of the jobÂ
search.Â
Walking in the cold wind, she felt numb and miserably alone.Â
She’d thought that all the problems would be solved as long as she left Cassian.Â
Now, she realized that she’d underestimated the hard reality and overestimated Cassian’s integrity.Â
‘Cassian is heartless. No wonder he approved my resignation quickly. He knows how to get back at me. He tries to tell me that, without Honoria Capital and him, I am nobody. He is forcing me to surrender,‘ she thought.Â
Cassian had said that Aurelia would plead for his help within three days if she left him.Â
She would crawl back to him if she weren’t that stubborn or proud.Â
She had given her word that she would never look back, about her career or her heart. What didn’t kill her would make her stronger.Â
Aurelia collected herself and called Michael for a meeting tomorrow.Â
Michael seldom missed Aurelia’s call, but he did this time.Â

It was just past 7 pm, so it wasn’t late yet. Besides, Michael was a night owl.Â

‘He didn’t answer my call, perhaps because he is under pressure from Cassian. It is understandable. In Ashmont, who has the guts to offend Cassian for my sake?‘ Aurelia thought.Â
Aurelia felt pretty deflated. Right then, Gideon’s call came.Â
Thinking that Gideon had called to check up on her, Aurelia answered the call. Then, she heard Gideon ask over the phone, “Is it true that you are looking for a job?”Â
The circle was small, so Aurelia wasn’t surprised that Gideon had gotten the news. “Yes,” Aurelia responded.Â
“Have you found a good one?” Gideon sounded genuinely concerned.Â
Over the phone, Aurelia heard someone urge Gideon to drink. ‘It seems he is at a gathering,‘ she thought.Â
Gideon told his friend that he would be back later. Then, he asked Aurelia, “What do you think of joiningÂ
Gold Gauntlet?”Â
Honestly, Aurelia had never thought about that.Â
The reason was that Gold Gauntlet was a bank whose operation was completely different from that of investment banks and capital firms.Â
Aurelia didn’t know whether she was up to the job. Now, she got swayed because there were no options left forÂ
her.Â
Gideon didn’t urge Aurelia to give her answer right away. He said, “Take your time. Think about it carefully. Call me when you have the answer. I got to go. I am at a gathering.”Â
“Okay,” Aurelia said. She felt grateful to Gideon, who provided timely help while the others turned their backs on her.Â
After the call, Gideon turned around and found Tessa standing right behind him.Â
Judging from her expression and reaction, he knew that she had overheard his conversations with Aurelia.Â
Tessa couldn’t help but ask, “Gideon, are you going to hire Aurelia?”Â
“Can’t I? None of your business, isn’t it?” Gideon’s voice was tinged with contempt.Â
Tessa frowned. “I don’t like her.”Â
“There are many people you don’t like. Do you want me to stay away from all of them?”Â
“Only Aurelia. Gideon, for my sake.” It was rare for Tessa to plead with Gideon.Â
“Sorry. Your little trick works on Cassian and him only.”Â
Hearing this, Tessa changed her expression. “Wait, are you jealous?” Tessa asked as Jasper’s previous comment echoed in her mind.Â

Gideon chuckled. “Come on! Aurelia is capable, so I want her in my team.”Â
“Is that all?”Â
Gideon asked, “What else?”Â

Tessa couldn’t see through Gideon though they had been together for several years. This time was no exception.Â
In the private room, Liam asked Cassian about Aurelia’s job search.Â
“It is said that you belittled Aurelia right before Gilbert today.” Liam was a typical gossiper.Â
