Chapter 50Â
“You’re pretty well–informed.” Cassian leaned back in his chair, and his handsome face was expressionless.Â
“Without your interference, Gilbert must have recruited Aurelia. He is a satyr, you know,” Liam said.Â
Cassian said nothing. He picked up his glass from the table and took a sip of the wine.Â
Liam blinked in surprise. “Aren’t you allergic to alcohol?”Â
“I’ve been doing some treatments for it lately. Now, I can drink a bit wine,” Cassian replied casually.Â
Liam had confusion on his face and asked, “Why do you drink wine all of a sudden?”Â
Jasper butted in, “So Tessa won’t have to drink at the business gatherings. She is Cassian’s first love. Cassian is quite protective of her.”Â
Liam wanted the truth from Cassian, but both Tessa and Gideon were already back.Â
Liam went back to the previous topic. “Tell me why you make things difficult for Aurelia. She had been with you for seven years, and you aren’t that heartless in my eyes.”Â
“Aurelia doesn’t know what is good for her, so Cassian teaches her a good lesson.” Jasper sneered. “She takes herself too seriously. She thinks that he will beg her to stay. Just wait and see. She will crawl back to him sooner or later.”Â
Gideon grabbed his coat and said, “Enjoy yourselves, guys. I have things to do. Bye.”Â
“Come on! What could be more important than our gathering?” Jasper persuaded Gideon to stay.Â
Gideon walked away without looking back. Tessa looked gloomy, so Jasper asked, “Tessa, what’s wrong? Are you sick?”Â
Tessa hesitated for a minute and then said, “Gideon intends to hire Aurelia.”Â
Cassian drank the rest of his wine in one go. Under the effect of alcohol, his eyes turned red slightly, so they seemed deeper than before.Â

After a bath, Aurelia turned on her computer and tried her luck on some job–finding websites.Â
She lowered the bar of the size and distance of her potential employer. In short, she wouldn’t give up so easily. ‘I don’t think that Cassian is almighty,‘ she thought.Â
She was scrolling through the website when her phone buzzed with an unknown number.Â
Aurelia answered the call, and the caller introduced himself as Gilbert from the Kim Group. What a surprise!Â
Gilbert asked if Aurelia had landed a job, and the latter said no.Â
Chapter 50Â
Gilbert said, “How about working as my secretary?”Â
Aurelia frowned. “But I applied to be an investment manager. Mr. Kim, there must be a misunderstandingÂ
“No misunderstanding. I called to ask if you would be interested in being my personal secretary Gilbert emphasized the word “personal“.Â
Aurelia read between the lines and turned Gilbert down flat.Â
Angry and embarrassed, Gilbert ridiculed Aurelia. “Stop pretending. It is known to all that you are a loose woman Cassian is tired of. He dumped you, and he spares no effort to force you out of the field. I try to help you, but you really don’t know what’s good for you!”Â
Without hesitation, Aurelia hung up the phone. She felt lucky that she didn’t get the job in the Kim Group.Â
‘With Gilbert as my boss, I wouldn’t stay long in the Kim group even if I got the job. Cassian is a bit useful. At least, I filtered out a jerk because of him,’ Aurelia thought.Â
She was amused by her curious sense of optimism.Â
Again, she sent out some resumes, and the size of the company no longer mattered to her.Â
She would give it a go as long as there was an opportunity.Â
It was time for her to go to bed. Right then, the pain in her belly made her break into a cold sweat.Â
The pain was intense and familiar. Her period had started, and it was early again.Â
Ever since the miscarriage, her cycle had become unpredictable.Â
Her period started without any signs, and her menstrual cramps were way worse than before.Â
The couch was barely 32 feet from the desk, but it took Aurelia quite a long time to shuffle there with the support of the wall.Â
With trembling fingers, she fumbled through the drawer, grabbed a painkiller, and swallowed it dry.Â
Touching her forehead, she felt nothing but cold sweat.Â
Owen had said that Aurelia was weak and might not become as healthy as before.Â
A shattered heart might mend itself as time ticked by. Physical harm was permanent and irreversible.Â
Aurelia curled up on her bed and was lost in a haze of pain.Â
Thankfully, the painkiller started kicking in, so the cramps in her belly began to ease up.Â
However, she still felt cold, very cold. That bone–deep chill made her relive that rainy night all over again.Â
The closed door…Â

The black umbrella above her head…Â
The hand that dragged her out of the darkness…Â
The hasty knocks on the door startled Aurelia awake, and she bolted upright in bed.Â
After her eyes swept around the room, she realized that she had just dreamed.Â

In a daze, she heard the knocks on the door again. This time, the knocks became hastier and louder.Â
Aurelia felt annoyed as if someone was banging her head. She glanced at the clock. It was already past midnight. Who was her visitor at such a late hour?Â
Before she checked who was at the door, her phone rang. The word “Freebie” flashed on her phone screen.Â
Half–awake, Aurelia forgot that she, in a fit of anger, had changed Cassian’s name to Freebie on that crazy night.Â
She didn’t snap awake till Cassian’s voice came from the doorway.Â
“Open the door, Aurelia!” Cassian shouted.Â
‘Whose dog is barking?‘ Aurelia thought. She then pulled the covers over her head to sleep on.Â
However, Cassian kept pounding on the door, each knock louder than the last.Â
He would wake up the whole building in the end if Aurelia did nothing.Â
To avoid complaints from her neighbors, Aurelia indignantly got out of bed and stalked over to open the door.Â
Prudent, she pushed her door open a crack, so she could keep Cassian outside while glaring at him. “Mr. Locke, did you get lost at midnight?”Â
‘It is weird that he has been a frequenter lately. In the past, he never showed up here. Won’t his new girlfriend complain? Does she have such a big heart?‘ Aurelia wondered.Â
“Open the door,” Cassian ordered.Â
‘Talks like he owns this place!‘ Aurelia thought to herself. She ignored the order and shot back, “This is harassment, Cassian. Go away, or I will call the cops.”Â
“Go ahead, call the cops,” Cassian said coolly.Â
‘Interesting!‘ Aurelia thought. Then, she called the police as requested. “Help! A man is harassing me. Please come and arrest him.”Â
Cassian felt dumbfounded. The cops showed up pretty fast. When they arrived, Aurelia and Cassian were still locked in a standoff.Â
Because Cassian, well–dressed, didn’t look like a bad guy, the cops politely asked, “What’s going on here?”Â

Cassian, deadpan as ever, replied, “I am bickering with my girlfriend.”Â

Instantly, the cops became grim and reproached Aurelia. “Miss, do you understand that there may be some people who are in a worse situation than you and need our help?”Â
Aurelia protested, “I am not his girlfriend. Officer, he is a liar.”Â
Cassian sneered. “She has a red mole on her left breast and a little birthmark on her thigh…”Â
“I’m so sorry! My bad! I’ll never trouble you with a trifle again!” Aurelia yanked Cassian into her home and sincerely apologized to the cops.Â
She was afraid that Cassian would give away all her secrets if there were a delay in her apology.Â
