Chapter 98 

 

Last night, he was out with his first love, swept up in a whirlwind of romance till dawn. 

And now, here he was, showing up at her door first thing in the morning, acting all attentive. 

Is he some kind of master at juggling his schedule or what? Seriously, what is he after?‘ she wondered. 

“I thought I made myself clear. We’ve cut all ties, our lives shouldn’t cross anymore. So, what are you doing showing up at my mom’s place? Are you out of your mind?” Aurelia snapped. 

“You really think you can soften me up by trying to get to me through my mom?” she scoffed. 

‘He seriously underestimates me,‘ Aurelia thought. ‘I’m no pushover, and I never go back to my ex!‘ 

Cassian didn’t get angry at Aurelia’s grilling. Instead, he arched an eyebrow and teased, “Do you hate me that much?” 

Aurelia shot back without missing a beat, “Absolutely! If you and a random criminal were locked in a room and I had two bullets, I’d shoot you twice!” 

Hearing that, Cassian’s eyes softened with a faint smile, making him look almost tender for a moment. “Wow, you must really hate me.” 

Aurelia didn’t want to waste another word on him. 

As soon as the elevator doors opened, she stepped out ahead of him, not bothering to wait. 

Cassian, with those long legs of his, easily caught up with her in a couple of steps, even though he got out a bit later. 

“Did you take the protective charm from my car?” he asked. 

Aurelia sped up, not even looking his way. “No! Don’t pin that on me! And quit bugging my mom, and quit messing with my life.” 

“Oh,” he replied, sounding totally indifferent. 

Aurelia didn’t even know if he was listening, but she’d said her piece. There was nothing left to say. 

She was done with him, didn’t want anything to do with Cassian ever again.

The sun was shining bright at two in the afternoon, casting a sharp line between them, as if nature itself was drawing a boundary, making it clear they were worlds apart. 

“My dad’s birthday is coming up,” Cassian said suddenly, his gaze lingering on their shadows stretched out on the ground. “He can’t stand me. If you could, maybe spend some time with him.” 

Aurelia stopped in her tracks. 

It finally clicked; this was the real reason Cassian had shown up at her place, acting all nice. 

‘So he wants me to cover for his family duty?‘ Aurelia didn’t give him a straight answer. She just grabbed her car keys and left 

without another word. 

In her rearview mirror, Aurelia saw Cassian still standing there, frozen in place. He was just staring after her, looking totally spaced out. 

However, she didn’t hesitate for a second.

It was like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders, finally free to live her own life, now that she was away from him.

Aurelia went straight back to the office to work late, and while she was at it, she checked the resumes in her inbox. 

That was when she noticed a familiar name: Nadia Robbins. 

‘Guess Honoria Capital let her go, Aurelia thought. 

Yet, she wasn’t surprised. Cassian never let things slide in this department. Except for Tessa, of course. 

Aurelia rejected Nadia’s resume without a second thought. 

She had some skills, otherwise, she wouldn’t have survived Honoria Capital’s brutal screening process. 

But she was always scheming, and keeping her around would just be asking for trouble. 

By the time Aurelia finished going through the last resume, it was already eight at night. 

She rubbed her aching lower back, ready to head home. 

Since it was the New Year’s holiday, the whole building was dead quiet. 

Aurelia waited by the elevator for a while before it finally made its way down from upstairs. 

When the doors slid open, she was surprised to see someone inside. It was someone she recognized. 

Arturo looked just as surprised to see Aurelia. “Ms. Corin, what are you doing here?” 

The man had a cardboard box in his arms, stuffed with his personal things. It looked like he was leaving for good. 

“I quit Honoria Capital,” Aurelia said as she got in. 

Arturo looked genuinely surprised. He had no idea she’d left. 

After all, to most people, Honoria Capital was a top–tier company; great benefits, high pay, most folks would kill for a job there. 

Aurelia could guess what was running through his mind, so she showed off her badge. “I’m running my own show now,” she said. 

Arturo looked at the company name and her new title, and while he was surprised, it totally checked out. 

He’d always known, from working with Aurelia, that she was smart and had great instincts. 

He’d always felt that someone like her was far too capable to be stuck as someone’s secretary. Even if it was for Cassian, it still didn’t do her justice. 

“Congrats!” Arturo said, genuinely happy for her. 

“Thanks,” Aurelia replied, her gaze landing on the box he was holding. After a moment, she asked, “Did you leave Alpite Group?” 

“Yeah,” Arturo said with a helpless smile. “My partner and I just couldn’t agree on anything. Too many differences, so we split up.” 

She couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. Arturo was seriously talented and full of creative ideas.

That was exactly why she’d picked their project in the first place. 

“Guess I must look pretty pathetic right now,” Arturo said, a little embarrassed. 

“So, what are you planning to do next?” Aurelia asked. 

Arturo shook his head. “I have no idea. I’m totally lost right now.” 

He and Ewan were college buddies and roommates.

Back then, Arturo was all about making games, and Ewan came from a pretty well–off family. So they put their heads together and decided to start a business. 

They were butting heads from day one, but since Ewan was footing the bill, Arturo just sucked it up for the bigger picture. 

If Ewan hadn’t pushed things too far, it never would’ve come to this. 

Aurelia paused, then said, “Just take some time off. Clear your mind a bit.” 

“Yeah,” Arturo agreed. He knew he really needed to reset and get his head right. 

Aurelia tucked her business card into his box. “If you ever come up with something, hit me up.” 

Arturo looked a little moved. “Okay.” 

Early the next morning, Aurelia got a text from the hospital with her appointment details. 

Aurelia blinked, still groggy, before it finally clicked; Cassian had actually said he’d go with her to the hospital today. 

‘He actually remembered!‘ Aurelia thought, a little surprised. 

She checked the doctor online and saw that he was a total expert in his field, like, the real deal. 

People usually had to wait forever just to get an appointment with him.

Aurelia was going to waste a chance like this, she was definitely going to check it out at the hospital. 

If one doesn’t take care of their health, nothing else matters. 

Her periods were getting more and more irregular, and the cramps were getting worse every month. 

Her body was basically screaming at her for help. She couldn’t ignore it anymore. 

After breakfast, Aurelia drove herself to the hospital. 

Meanwhile, there was still no word from Cassian. 

‘He probably just said that in front of my mom to score points. Like I’d actually believe he meant it,‘ Aurelia thought. 

Getting her an appointment with a top doctor was probably the most he’d ever do for her. As for anything else, she really shouldn’t expect too much. 

When Aurelia got to the hospital, she checked in with the specialist. 

As soon as he heard her name, his attitude instantly warmed up and he ushered her straight into the exam room, all smiles and extra enthusiasm. 

‘He’s probably only this friendly because of Cassian, Aurelia figured.

The doctor asked about her medical history, and when he heard she’d had an abortion, his face grew serious. 

After running several tests, he sat her down and explained the results.

“Your uterine lining is naturally thinner than most, so getting pregnant isn’t easy for you. Honestly, you were lucky to conceive at all, but losing the baby did a lot of damage. That’s why you’re dealing with all these issues,” he said. 

He pushed up his glasses, looking at her with sympathy. “To be real, having kids in the future is going to be really difficult. You should be prepared for that.” 

Aurelia never expected that the miscarriage would have such a huge impact on her.
