The less–than–ideal test results weighed heavily on Aurelia’s mind.

Since Cassian was the one who got her in touch with this specialist, Aurelia made a small request to the doctor before she left. 

She asked him not to disclose her test results to anyone. 

The doctor adjusted his glasses and said, “Protecting patient privacy is definitely one of a doctor’s most important duties. You can trust my professional integrity.” 

“Thank you,” Aurelia said. 

Then, she walked out of the hospital with a heavy heart. Even the weather seemed to get it; gray and gloomy, just like her mood. 

Cassian still hadn’t shown up. Honestly, she couldn’t even tell what she was feeling anymore. 

Whether he came or not, it didn’t make a difference to her, not anymore. She’d grown numb a long time ago. 

Her only thought was, if he couldn’t follow through, then he shouldn’t bother making promises at all.

As soon as the New Year’s holiday ended, Aurelia was back to her busy work routine. 

She walked into her office early in the morning and asked Miranda to brew her a super strong black coffee for a pick–me–up. 

Miranda nodded, but when she brought it over, it wasn’t black coffee at all. It was a cup of warm hot cocoa. 

Aurelia frowned at her. 

But Miranda said, “You shouldn’t have strong black coffee during your period. Hot cocoa will be much better for you.” 

“How’d you know I’m having my period?” Aurelia asked, curious. 

Miranda shrugged. “It’s obvious. Every time, your face gets all pale and you start rubbing your stomach without even realizing it.” 

“Look at you, getting all observant now,” Aurelia said with a smile. 

Miranda was her protégé. She was good at pretty much everything, except she’d always been a bit scatterbrained. 

Back when they were at Honoria Capital, Aurelia was always having to remind her about that. 

But now, it looked like all that effort was finally paying off. 

Miranda puffed up with pride at the compliment. “Obviously! Who do you think whipped me into shape?” 

Then she added, “Go on, drink up! I’ve got a whole pot waiting, so just let me know when you need a refill!” 

Aurelia didn’t know how to respond, so she just nodded. 

That afternoon, Aurelia was going to personally interview the candidates who’d made it through the first round. 

Just as she was about to head into the interview room. Miranda stopped her and told her something. “Nadia is here.”

Aurelia frowned. “Didn’t I reject her resume? Who told her to come?”

Miranda shook her head. “I have no idea. I just saw her at the front desk when I went to pick up a package. She’s pretty good at working the room, even bought coffee for the receptionist.” 

Aurelia knew exactly what Nadia was like. 

Then, she quickly flipped through the resumes in her hand. And sure enough, Nadia’s was in the pile. 

“I’ll just throw it out,” Miranda said. 

Aurelia put a hand on hers. “Don’t worry about it. Let her in.” 

With that, Aurelia headed into the interview room. 

The interviews kicked off right away. Since they’d already been pre–screened, everyone who made it to the second round was pretty capable. 

Aurelia went through another round of selection, keeping the ones who were a good fit and gently passing on those who 

weren’t. 

Nadia was the ninth candidate to step into the interview room. 

She was riding high on confidence before she even crossed the threshold. After all, her resume was hands–down the most impressive in the whole group. 

Just the fact that she’d been an investment manager at Honoria Capital gave her all the confidence she needed. 

As for her online application getting rejected, she was sure it was just a slip–up on their part. 

That was why she walked into Regal Investment, feeling completely sure of herself. 

Aurelia guessed Nadia probably had no clue she was the one running the place. 

If she knew, she’d never have set foot in here. 

Nadia walked in wearing a confident smile, about to launch into her self–introduction. 

But the moment she realized Aurelia was sitting front and center, her introduction died in her throat. Her expression was priceless. 

Aurelia kept her tone strictly professional and gestured for Nadia to take a seat. 

She just stuck to the standard questions, not giving Nadia any special treatment or making things hard for her. 

But Nadia was so nervous, she kept stumbling over her answers. 

“Thanks for coming in today. We’ll be in touch within a week, so please check your email and phone. Thank you, and could you send in the next candidate?” Aurelia said. 

Nadia walked out of the interview room with awkward, stiff steps. She could already guess how this was going to end. 

As Nadia was passing by the front desk, the receptionist called out, “Hey Nadia, all done with your interview? Did it go well?” 

Nadia was totally stumped and didn’t know what to say. 

The receptionist just grinned. “With a resume like yours, you’re a shoo–in! We’ll be coworkers soon, I just know it! Can’t wait to work together!”

Nadia paused, then asked, “Wait, Aurelia… she’s your boss?”

“Yep! Crazy, right? She’s so young and already running the show! Super talented, gorgeous, the whole package. She’s basically living the dream!” the receptionist said, beaming. 

With every word the receptionist said, Nadia’s face fell a little more, her expression growing increasingly awkward. 

“Seriously, don’t worry. Our boss is amazing, super down–to–earth, no bossy vibes. We might be small now, but with her talent, this place is going to grow,” the receptionist added. 

Nadia left Regal Investment in a daze, like she was sleepwalking. 

Standing at the entrance of the office building, she felt utterly adrift, a wave of confusion washing over her. 

Ever since she got fired from Honoria Capital, she’d been scrambling to find a new job, sending out applications left and right. 

At first, she only went for the big names, figuring her time at Honoria Capital would give her a leg up. 

But to her surprise, every single one of those big companies turned her down. 

After some discreet digging, she finally found out the truth; Cassian had blacklisted her. 

‘Seriously? All this just because I threw a little shade at Aurelia?‘ Nadia thought, totally baffled. ‘Was Cassian really that petty?‘ 

Just to survive, Nadia had to set her sights lower and start applying to smaller companies. 

But even the small companies didn’t dare hire her, guess the rumors had already spread. 

In the end, she could only go for brand new companies, figuring Cassian’s reach hadn’t gotten that far yet. So, she threw her resume at Regal Investment. 

But it never crossed her mind that Regal Investment was run by Aurelia herself. 

Nadia’s chest felt so tight she could barely breathe, frustration simmering inside her. She just couldn’t swallow this bitter pill. 

By the time Aurelia wrapped up all the interviews, two hours had already slipped by. 

Miranda came in and set another cup of hot cocoa in front of her. 

Sure, it was good for her, but honestly, drinking this every day would drive anyone crazy. 

“I’ll switch it up tomorrow,” Miranda said, picking up on it. 

Aurelia waved her off. “No need to go to all that trouble. My period will be over soon anyway.” 

“Then I’ll switch to something that’s good for your stomach. Didn’t you say your stomach’s been acting up?” Miranda said. 

“Put that energy into your work, will you?” Aurelia replied. 

Miranda waved it off. “I’ve got it covered.” 

Aurelia just let her do her thing.

Aurelia paused for a moment. 

She’d always figured it was Cassian who blocked her background check. Turned out it was Tessa all along. 

But really, Tessa was probably just following Cassian’s orders anyway. Those two were basically the same, always covering for each other.
